The Animal Research Controversy: Protest, Process & Public Policy, Andrew N. Rowan, Franklin M. Loew, Joan C. Weer Jan 1995

The Animal Research Controversy: Protest, Process & Public Policy, Andrew N. Rowan, Franklin M. Loew, Joan C. Weer

Experimentation Collection

The controversy today regarding the use of animals in research appears on the surface to be a strongly polarized struggle between the scientific community and the animal protection movement. However, there is a wide range of opinions and philosophies on both sides. Mistrust between the factions has blossomed while communication has withered. Through the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s, the animal movement grew in numbers and financial resources, and developed much greater public recognition and political clout. The research community paid relatively little attention to the animal movement for much of this period but, alarmed by several public relations coups …

Scheduling Secondary Schools: Questions And Answers, Lynn Westfall Jan 1995

Scheduling Secondary Schools: Questions And Answers, Lynn Westfall

MERC Publications

Some researchers believe scheduling techniques have changed frequently and dramatically since the early 1960's. And, there is no doubt that changes have occurred in education. Changes such as the development of computerized scheduling techniques in the 1960's; the increase in the number of courses offered; the concern for equal opportunity; the individualization of instruction; and the increase in the variety and flexibility of scheduling models available to schools, led to a growing awareness of accountability by the 1970s (Dempsey * Traverso, 1983). The quality of individual opportunity prompted educators to revitalize conventional scheduling, and to consider diverse options.

Though such …

An Investigation Of Value Accessibility And Its Role In The Value-Attitude Relationship, Rae Sidney Gilchrist

Digitized Theses

The primary thesis of this research is that values can causally influence attitudes, and that one mechanism of that influence involves value accessibility, or the ease with which values can be accessed from memory. Three studies are reported that address questions concerning the nature of value accessibility and its role in the value-attitude relationship.;A significant positive relationship was found to exist between the importance people ascribe to various values and the speed with which they can indicate the perceived importance of these values. This was interpreted to mean that response latencies constitute a valid measure of value accessibility.;It was further …

A Hermeneutic Study Of Theeducational Theories Of Willa Cather, Marie Hassett Mcdonough

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The hermeneutic analysis conducted for this study suggests that five theories about AmericanEducation may be found in Willa Cather's work. First, she believed that the needs of the individual, not the society, should be the primary concerns of educators. Second, she shows us that the family and the community may play an important role in a learner's development, but cautions that the learner should not be seen as limited to the values and attitudes of the family and community. Third, she believed that Americans had developed a warped view ofEducation, confusing the memorization of facts about art, literature or philosophy …

Parenting For Emotional Growth: Lines Of Development, Henri Parens, Md

Thus, in the Textbook, the issues will be ordered in the same sequence in all of the units.

Parenting For Emotional Growth: A Curriculum For Students In Grades K Thru Twelve, Henri Parens, Md Jan 1995

Parenting For Emotional Growth: A Curriculum For Students In Grades K Thru Twelve, Henri Parens, Md

Parenting for Emotional Growth

The PEG Curriculum has 3 distinctive features:

  • It addresses the mental health domain of parenting. We emphasize that we are talking about the emotional aspects of rearing 'the human child', whatever the child's race, ethnicity, or religion, because all human infants have the same basic emotional and psychological needs. This course of study for parenting consists of three sub-domains of study: (a) human emotional and behavior development; (b) strategies for optimizing the child's development; and (c) other pertinent parenthood issues.
  • The curriculum materials extend from the kindergarten level through 12th grade. In a unique collaboration between mental health and …

Parenting For Emotional Growth: Textbook, Henri Parens, Md Jan 1995

Parenting For Emotional Growth: Textbook, Henri Parens, Md

Parenting for Emotional Growth

This textbook, on which the Parenting for Emotional Growth Curriculum, Workshops, and Lines of Development are based, is highly detailed and is based in psychodynamic theories that address parenting issues pertinent to optimizing the child's psychological development, mental well-being, and abilities to adapt constructively. The presentation of materials is organized by the rationale that when parents know, understand, and can positively handle the child's evolving emotional and experiential needs and psychological developments, the parents' rearing strategies tend to better optimize their children's developmental potential than when such knowledge, understanding, and handling are lacking. It is exactly because this …

The unprecedented demand for occupational therapists and resulting growth in student numbers necessitates the need to understand how students acquire professional ideology, learn expected role behavior, and identify themselves as occupational therapists.
