Improve The City: Send Your Kids To Its Schools, Jane C. Murphy Jan 2000

Improve The City: Send Your Kids To Its Schools, Jane C. Murphy

All Faculty Scholarship

For parents who are looking for a way to make a difference, I have a suggestion: Consider sending your children to a public school.

For some this suggestion may seem too modest to be meaningful. Most, however, would dismiss it as naive. The conventional wisdom is that the public schools are in terrible shape and no parent with the financial resources would make such a decision. But such reasoning reflects the prevailing narrow vision of community and good citizenship.

The classical definition of citizenship was framed in terms of duties - citizens were obligated to take their turn in public …

All are actively involved in helping schools improve and children succeed. Each of them goes about this quest in a very different way. Mary is a political activist well known in the halls of …

Participatory Community Literacy In Peace Corps Training, Natalie Ulrica Gray Jan 2000

Participatory Community Literacy In Peace Corps Training, Natalie Ulrica Gray

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This exploratory research project compared the goals and components of Participatory Community Literacy (PCL) and Peace Corps Training to determine whether it would be appropriate to integrate a PCL project into Peace Corps training. Literature on both PCL and Peace Corps Training was reviewed, and then comparisons were drawn between the two subjects to find commonalities. Because the competencies for Peace Corps training had commonalities with elements of Participatory Community Literacy, a model of integration of a PCL project into Peace Corps training was designed. This model consisted of an integrated thematic curriculum, based on PCL objectives integrated with Peace …

Struggling In U.S. Society : Three Ethnic Group's [Sic] Perspective Of U.S. Society, Xiu Zhang Jan 2000

Struggling In U.S. Society : Three Ethnic Group's [Sic] Perspective Of U.S. Society, Xiu Zhang

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This action thesis examines three ethnic and cultural groups: African-Americans, Mexican-Americans, and Asian-Americans, and their perceptions of U. S. society. From individual interviews of the participants, the thesis identifies and analyzes the different feelings and perspectives of these three groups. By analyzing what they consider to have caused ethnic or racial problems to occur, it is possible, I propose, to narrow down cultural differences and hopefully discover ways to ameliorate the feelings of those minorities affected by racial or ethnic problems. Generation after generation, people have come to the shores of this great nation, to try to find a good …

Parent-Teacher Home Response Learning Journals To Foster Collaboration In Children's Literacy Development, Marie Vargas Piel Jan 2000

Parent-Teacher Home Response Learning Journals To Foster Collaboration In Children's Literacy Development, Marie Vargas Piel

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of this study was to connect English language learning (ELL) student's school life with their home life. Proposition 227, which prohibited the use of Spanish in the classrooms, has made it difficult to make the home-school connection. Research shows that parents play a vital role in the education of their children but Proosition 227 severely restricted Spanish speaking parents' participation in their child's education. This study demonstrates how the use of home response learning journals empowered parents to participate in their children's literacy and biliteracy development.

Integration: Being Realistic Isn't Realistic, Norman Kunc

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

An increasing amount of pressure is being put on school boards to integrate students with physical, mental, and learning disabilities into regular classrooms, and thus teachers, principals, and those within the educational hierarchy are facing a dilemma to which there seem to be no easy answers. The primary concern confronting these educators is which students should be placed within the regular classroom and which students should be placed in segregated settings - whether in segregated schools or in segregated classes within a regular school. Even within the field of Special Education, there is a wide range of ideologies as to …

Overview Of Consciousness Research, Imants Barušs Jan 2000

Overview Of Consciousness Research, Imants Barušs

Psychology

The purpose of this paper is to orient the reader to the contemporary scientific study of consciousness. One of the most noticeable features of research concerning consciousness is that there are three domains of discourse, the physiological, computational and experiential, each with its own methodology, and concerns. While confusion is often expressed about what it is that one is discussing, there are four main categories of definitions of the term consciousness: consciousness is the registration, processing and acting on information; behavioural consciousness is the explicit knowledge of one's situation, mental states or actions as demonstrated by one's behaviour; subjective consciousness …
