The Single-Sex Classroom And Math Self-Concept In Girls, Gina M. Piraccini May 2001

The Single-Sex Classroom And Math Self-Concept In Girls, Gina M. Piraccini

Student Work

Research shows girls' and boys' mathematics self-concept and achievement are comparable in elementary school; however as adolescence emerges, girls' scores fall below boys' (AAUW, 1992; Marsh, Parker & Barnes, 1985). In general self-concept in mathematics has been found to be highly correlated with mathematics achievement (Marsh et al., 1986, Shavelson & Bolus, 1982; Skaalvik & Rankin, 1990).

The Efficacy Of Classwide Peer Tutoring On Students With Attentional Difficulties, Todd Reznicek May 2001

The Efficacy Of Classwide Peer Tutoring On Students With Attentional Difficulties, Todd Reznicek

Student Work

Class wide peer tutoring (CWPT) has been used as an effective intervention for reading, math, and spelling, as well as other subjects. The present study explored spelling and social skill improvement for students with attentional difficulties. Dependent measures included spelling improvement, mean initiations and responses, and total interaction times. Expected treatment effects were not as strong as found in previous studies for spelling. Social skill effects were mixed, with more consistent results obtained with the initiation and duration measures during the first baseline to implementation phase of CWPT. Response to initiation results were more mixed; perhaps because of the new …

Characteristics Of Recidivism Among Intensive And Regular Probationers., Jennifer Joseph

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined characteristics of 100 intensive probationers and 100 regular probationers to have a better understanding of why some probationers recidivate and others do not. Logistic analysis was used to analyze the following variables: age, race, gender, employment status, level of education, convicted offense, prior misdemeanor arrests, prior felony arrests, history of drug abuse, and type of probation. It was discovered that age, prior misdemeanor arrests, and offender category were significant variables correlated to recidivism. These findings are consistent with prior research and provide information that can be helpful to probation and parole officers in their supervision of offenders …

Crisis Management Plan Characteristics In Elementary Schools As Perceived By Nebraska Public School Principals, Linda K. Christensen

Student Work

The purpose of this study was to investigate the importance of crisis management plans and their elements as perceived by Nebraska elementary school principals. Data were collected by using a survey instrument sent to a stratified random sample of 300 Nebraska elementary school principals. The sample was delineated by school district size, small, medium, and large. The survey, which included 21 questions, was designed to analyze the extent to which crisis management plans were in place. A total of 188 surveys were returned for a return rate of 63%.

Differences In Value Expectancy And Outcome Expectation Regarding Weight Gain Among Participants In An Air Force Tobacco Cessation Program, James E. Reineke May 2001

Differences In Value Expectancy And Outcome Expectation Regarding Weight Gain Among Participants In An Air Force Tobacco Cessation Program, James E. Reineke

Student Work

The impact of tobacco has been one of the greatest public health concerns of the last quarter century, and while advances have been made a significant percentage of Americans continues to smoke. One reason which tobacco users cite for continuing this negative health habit is the desire to maintain their current weight, or the fear of weight gain following tobacco cessation. While there may be negative consequences (real and perceived) to weight gain in the general population, definite sanctions exist in the United States military for those who gain weight in excess of their maximum allowable weight. Tobacco cessation classes …

The Work-Place Experience Of Non-Team Special Area Teachers As Affected By Institutional Procedures In Middle Schools Structured For Team-Teaching, Cecelia A. Birckhead

Student Work

Special area teachers in five middle schools were interviewed for the study. Questions were derived from research on the advantages of team-teaching. The team structure gives support for improving teaching strategies and lends a sense of community to the learning environment. Teams can collaborate in meeting student needs and in solving discipline problems. Their classrooms are clustered together lending to the development of a sense of unity by affiliation. The special area teachers were not included on such interdisciplinary teaching teams. The qualitative trends and themes that developed in this study indicated that the advantages available in team-teaching were difficult …

Incorporating Technology In Mathematics Education: A Suite Of E-Activities For The Modem Mathematics Classroom, Jennifer E. Youngberg May 2001

Incorporating Technology In Mathematics Education: A Suite Of E-Activities For The Modem Mathematics Classroom, Jennifer E. Youngberg

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

National studies indicate major deficiencies in students' understanding of mathematics. Research suggests that students tend to view mathematics as a set of computational rules rather than a process of discovery and a tool for problem-solving. Most students fail to grasp the concepts behind the computations.

Technology provides a partial solution to this problem. Over the past decade, computers have emerged as a powerful tool in education. Computers place the control of action in the learning process with the student. They allow students to experiment with, explore, and discover mathematics at their own pace. With computers, students can consider more examples …

Objective And Subjective Personality Characteristics Of Medical Students, Heather Anderson Meit May 2001

Objective And Subjective Personality Characteristics Of Medical Students, Heather Anderson Meit

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The present study viewed personality characteristics of medical students using both objective (i.e., a valid and reliable psychological instrument) and subjective methods (i.e., medical students' self-ratings of how they viewed themselves and how they believed others viewed them). The 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF, 5th Edition) and a researcher developed instrument, the Subjective Rating Form (SRF), were utilized in this study. Significant differences were found in 16PF scores from entry to medical school (Time 1) to exit from medical school (Time 2). Significant differences were also observed when SRF scores were compared between Self at Time 1 (retrospectively), Self at …

A Study Of The Impact Of Ohio's Instructional Support Funding Process On Institutional Behavior At Two-Year Colleges, Morries W. Beverage Jr. May 2001

A Study Of The Impact Of Ohio's Instructional Support Funding Process On Institutional Behavior At Two-Year Colleges, Morries W. Beverage Jr.

Student Scholarship

This study examines the impact that Ohio's higher education instructional support funding process has on decision-making at two-year colleges. In Ohio, instructional support subsidizes credit (degree-eligible) but not non-credit instruction. The study methodology included six colleges selected on the basis of how active or inactive they were in the provision of job-related non-credit training against their predicted activity. The colleges selected represent the three relatively most and least active institutions. Interviews were conducted at the six colleges with the President, Chief Academic Officer, Chief Fiscal Officer and Chief Non-Credit Instruction Officer. The study found evidence of influence from the instructional …

Scale Economies In Public Education: Evidence From School Level Data, Ryan C. Bosworth May 2001

Scale Economies In Public Education: Evidence From School Level Data, Ryan C. Bosworth

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The structure of school finance regimes in the United States has been a subject of much political and legal debate over the past three decades. Court rulings have required many states to restructure school financing methods in order to pursue some concept of equality. Achieving equality of spending is, of course, a simple matter. Developing a funding mechanism that provides for equality of educational opportunity. however, is difficult since such a system, by definition, must allow for cost differences across schools and districts.

An Analysis Of Key Leadership Behaviors Of The Principal In A High -Performing Elementary School Serving Mexican American Children In South Texas, Alda T. Benavides May 2001

An Analysis Of Key Leadership Behaviors Of The Principal In A High -Performing Elementary School Serving Mexican American Children In South Texas, Alda T. Benavides

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study is based on the theoretical framework that defines leadership as an influence process, one that depends on the extent to which people eventually perceive leadership as a quality someone possesses and as a result of that perception, consent to be led (Greenfield, 1998). Leadership is the process of being perceived as a leader (Lord and Maher, 1993). Doing good work at one's school and being seen to do such work is likely to be the most powerful strategy for positively influencing teachers' perceptions of one's leadership. This study expands on the theory that it is what you do …

A Study Of Parental Involvement At A Blue Ribbon Elementary School On The Texas-Mexico Border, Jay Scott Hollinger May 2001

A Study Of Parental Involvement At A Blue Ribbon Elementary School On The Texas-Mexico Border, Jay Scott Hollinger

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The involvement of parents in their children's education influences student achievement. In 1995, researchers identified mechanisms necessary for effective parent involvement. Although substantial research has been done on parent and family involvement, few studies have described the phenomenon among low socioeconomic Mexican-American families. In 1996, one case study was conducted at a high school and another was conducted at a middle school on the Texas-Mexico border. These studies described strategies and tactics used by the principal, teachers, and support staff to influence parents to become more involved in their children's education. The present study expands on these works by investigating …

Ensuring Educational Opportunity For Students With Disabilities: A Legal Analysis Of Section 504 Of The Rehabilitation Act Of 1973, Jacques Evan Trevino

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The study was a legal analysis of the reasonable accommodation standard as defined and applied by the judiciary in carrying out the requirements of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The purpose of the study was to identify problem areas in interpreting Section 504 as it applies to the responsibilities of public schools in light of differing standards applied by the Department of Education and the judiciary. An analysis of case law, federal statutes, and federal regulations helped to determine the current practices regarding the accommodation of disabled students in our public schools.

The study focused on the …
