Teaching Preparedness To Better Prepare Children In The Event Of Disaster, Brian Kendall

Theses and Dissertations from 2016

The purpose of this research was to determine if teaching preparedness to children will better prepare them in the event of a disaster. Children have been the target audience for several campaigns in the past. By introducing disaster awareness into the schools, it is hoped, like in other campaigns, that children will take the knowledge obtained and share that information to family and friends. This study was significant to the field of emergency management due to the need of providing the general public with the necessary information and resources that could potentially save lives. As a result of this study, …

Utilizing Tiger Competencies To Improve Informatics Practice, Kwun Ying M. Fung

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Nursing Informatics (NI) is quickly becoming an essential part of nursing. From the classroom, to the bedside, and to the boardroom, nurses across the nursing continuum are expected to use NI in their practice with the hopes of delivering better quality care to their patients. However, the training and education of NI provided to all levels of nurses is unable to keep up with the pace of technology. This project seeks to improve the NI competency of the nursing workforce at a pediatric hospital through an educational course using NI competencies identified by the Technology Informatics Guiding Educational Reform (TIGER) …

Protecting A Situk River Fish Camp Way Of Life Through Visitor Education: A Community-Based Approach, Nevette Bowen

Rural Development

Many sport fishermen who visit Yakutat understand little about the Situk-Ahrnklin Inlet set net fisheries. In Yakutat, these fisheries integrate commercial fishing with a subsistence fish camp way of life. This community participatory evaluation seeks to determine the usefulness of an interpretive sign and handout project aimed at alleviating a persistent visitor misconception that set net fishing is harming their ability to catch Situk River fish. It also explores what additional effort people in Yakutat think is needed to educate visitors about the set net fisheries. A combination of methods was used, including resident interviews, a community records search and …

This project is focused on quality improvement in patient satisfaction with regard to side effect management after oncology patient education. The global aim of this project is to improve oncology-specific patient education through the development of an evidenced-based educational binder to be given to patients in a hospital outpatient infusion center and used as an educational guide for nursing staff. Effective standardized patient education has been seen to improve: satisfaction, quality of life, adherence, self-management, outcomes, and reduce unnecessary emergency room visits (Dalby, 2013; Mann, 2011; Smith et al., 2013). A rise in patient confidence for nausea and vomiting self-care, …

The Power Of X, Darren B. Glass May 2016

The Power Of X, Darren B. Glass

Math Faculty Publications

In his recent book, The Math Myth: And Other STEM Delusions, political scientist Andrew Hacker argues, among other things, that we should not require high school students to take algebra.

Part of his argument, based on data some have questioned, is that algebra courses are a major contributor to students dropping out of high school. He also argues that algebra is nothing more than an "enigmatic orbit of abstractions" that most people will never use in their jobs. [excerpt]

Egypt And Malaysia: Investment, Education And Economic Growth, Noor Elghorab May 2016

Egypt And Malaysia: Investment, Education And Economic Growth, Noor Elghorab

The Undergraduate Research Journal

Numerous economists have explained economic growth using multiple theories and models, many of which highlight the importance of the accumulation of physical and human capital as the main determinants of growth. This paper aims to study the effect of investment in physical capital and human capital on economic growth and income per capita in Egypt and Malaysia, then develop an inter-relationship between the two forms of capital. The paper argues, using evidence in the form of literature and data, that there is a strong connection between physical and human capital and that sustainable economic growth can only be achieved by …

This study investigates U.S. elementary (kindergarten-Grade 6, ages 5-12) pre- and in-service teachers’ discussions of informational texts to understand current practices and identify needs with respect to how teachers support students in building knowledge from complex informational text as specified in the grade-level expectations of the Common Core State Standards adopted in many U.S. states. Transcripts and reflections from 17 in-service and 31 pre-service teachers’ informational text discussions were analyzed for teachers’ focus on the text, background knowledge, and text/background knowledge. In addition, transcripts were analyzed for the types of text ideas teachers targeted (details/main ideas), the comprehension demands placed …

Carrying On With Wayward Sons: With Their Brains Not Maturing Until Their Mid-20s, It’S Time To Use A Different Approach To Life And Learning With Our Young Men, Erika Simpson May 2016

Carrying On With Wayward Sons: With Their Brains Not Maturing Until Their Mid-20s, It’S Time To Use A Different Approach To Life And Learning With Our Young Men, Erika Simpson

Political Science Publications

Henrik Lagerlund and Erika Simpson argue that due to the later development of the male brain, which isn't fully matured until around age 25, a different approach to education and life planning for young men might be beneficial. They suggest delaying university entry until after high school and encouraging young men to explore the humanities and social sciences. This delay could allow them to mature and develop more responsibility before diving into higher education. The authors believe that such an approach could better prepare young men for future roles by focusing on a well-rounded education that includes classical studies, philosophy, …

Education About The Adverse Health Effects Of Recreational Marijuana: The Role Of Type Of Persuasion And Source, Dina Mattern May 2016

Education About The Adverse Health Effects Of Recreational Marijuana: The Role Of Type Of Persuasion And Source, Dina Mattern

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

In recent years, efforts have been made to legalize cannabis based on increasing research supporting medical benefits and the assumption, albeit questionable, that this is a safe drug. Statistics from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) demonstrate a sharp increase in users, especially among the youth population (2014). This is problematic because smoking marijuana during the teenage years has been shown to have possible adverse effects, such as despondency and potential complications in cognitive development. (Crane et al., 2012) This current study aims to explore effective ways to educate the public on the adverse health effects of recreational marijuana …

Financial Wellness And Undergraduate Students, Kristin N. O'Donovan

BU Well

Liberal Arts Universities often include a core curriculum with the education provided to students. This core curriculum includes a variety of topics, separate from a student’s major, aimed at delivering a well-rounded education. However, one major topic seems to be missing from the core curriculum of many universities across the country: finance. Not only does this have implications to the financial wellness of undergraduate students, but the overall wellness of students as well. Undergraduate students face an increasingly difficult financial landscape with unique needs, and the financial decisions they make may have repercussions years or decades into their futures. Based …

Complicating The Narrative: Labor, Feminism, And Civil Rights In The United Teachers Of New Orleans Strike Of 1990, Emma Long

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In 1990, over 3,000 of 4,500 New Orleans public school teachers refused to enter their classrooms over a contract dispute with their employer, the Orleans Parish School Board. For three weeks, teachers picketed while the negotiating team for their union, The United Teachers of New Orleans, worked to reach a contract agreement. Using interviews with striking teachers and union leaders, this paper aims to tell this story from their perspective. The interviews shed light on the ways that minorities and women used UTNO, with the incorporated ideologies and strategies of civil rights and feminism, as a platform to combat economic, …

I, along with University of Richmond professors Lázaro Lima and Laura Browder, received an National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association Latino Americans grant this year to organize the Latinos in Richmond program, which coincided with two classes that we taught this spring: the Tocqueville Seminar “Performing Latino USA: Democracy, Demography, and Equality” and the First-Year Seminar “Telling Richmond’s Latino Stories: A Community Documentary Project.” Since the goal of both courses was to explore how Latinos—the nation’s largest “minority” group in a representative democracy like America—is also the most underrepresented, I was interested in understanding Hamilton through …

“We Lost Our Family”: Student And Teacher Narratives From An Urban Public High School Closed Due To Poor Academic Performance, Adam Lutwin May 2016

“We Lost Our Family”: Student And Teacher Narratives From An Urban Public High School Closed Due To Poor Academic Performance, Adam Lutwin

Cultural Foundations of Education - Dissertations & Theses

Public school closings due to low academic performance have recently become popularized as a solution to perceived school failure. Using fictionalized concepts of decrepit buildings, unskilled teachers and unmotivated and obtuse students, the business management model favored by the federal government has moved from applied labels of failure with subsequent funding and assistance to full scale shuttering. The public schools that face perdition unquestionably share the same characteristics: they are urban schools with a high percentage of students who receive free/reduced lunch, have low standardized test scores, produce floundering graduation rates, and contain high populations of students of color, English …

Through The Lens Of The Cross: Cruciformity As A Model For Teaching Ministry, Benjamin D. Pickett May 2016

Through The Lens Of The Cross: Cruciformity As A Model For Teaching Ministry, Benjamin D. Pickett

Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry

As the contemporary church travels deeper into the postmodern era, modern methods of education and catechesis have remained. In this paper, a foundational set of principles drawn from Michael Gorman’s analysis of Pauline spirituality—known as “cruciformity”—is examined and presented as a lens to inform and support the teaching ministry in churches. Gorman’s thought provides a fresh way to understand the central theme of Paul’s correspondence to the first century churches.

The paper begins with a brief explanation of the current conditions regarding the adult education ministry of churches and then examines Gorman’s cruciform patterns of faith, love, power, and hope, …

When Meaningful Writing Reflects Vincentian Values, Michele Eodice, Anne Ellen Geller, Neal Lerner

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

In The Meaningful Writing Project – our study of over 700 seniors at three universities – students describe how education values are embodied in writing projects in and out of school. In brief, our results show that students find meaning when they are invited to tap into the power of personal connection, see what they are writing as applicable and relevant to the real world, imagine their future selves, immerse themselves in what they are thinking and writing about, and experience research for learning. In many cases, the experiences students reported are aligned with Vincentian values for higher education, namely …

A Prison Of Education: The School-To-Prison Pipeline In Low-Income Schools, Adam Le May 2016

A Prison Of Education: The School-To-Prison Pipeline In Low-Income Schools, Adam Le

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

This paper examines the relationship between prisons and education in American culture, comparing public schools in California cities to wealthier private schools. The essay critiques the American dream’s notions of social stratification and success of the individual in racialized areas. The first section compares funding disparities between education and prison and argues that while funding is an integral part of the inner-city’s problem, the curriculum itself is ineffective. The second section takes a closer look at differences in the curricula and educational settings of an inner-city school and a private school. It offers ethnic studies in secondary education as a …

The Burden Of Student Debt: Findings From A Survey Of Low- And Moderate-Income Households, Mathieu R. Despard, Samuel H. Taylor, Dana C. Perantie, Michal Grinstein-Weiss

Center for Social Development Research

Completing a college degree continues to offer a pathway for enjoying greater earnings. Yet tuition has risen sharply and state higher-education funding has declined in recent years, shifting the burden of paying for college to students and their families. As a result, most students (70%) depend on loans to help pay for college and student debt is now greater than credit card debt in the United States. Student debt is increasingly difficult to manage, as debt-to-income ratios, loan default rates, and delinquency rates are on the rise. This brief utilizes data from the 2014 Refund to Savings study to examine …

Educating Spouses May Be Key To Helping Veterans, Shawn J. Gourley May 2016

Educating Spouses May Be Key To Helping Veterans, Shawn J. Gourley

Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship

Veterans’ and family members are facing great difficulties when the veteran returns home to transition into civilian life. Marriages are struggling, and families are being torn apart when the veteran returns home with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Although there are many programs that have been created to educate spouses about PTSD, however, they often fall short of being able to prepare a family for the actual experience of transition. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is starting to come up with programs to help couples and research is starting to gain empirical support; there are still many couples left …

Theatre Education For Homeschooled Children, Jonathan A. Martin

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

In recent years, the push for theatre education from arts education advocates has been increasingly prevalent, especially in the face of substantial budget cuts from many public schools’ arts programs. While there is still a long way to go before theatre education will be integral to school curricula, there are clear steps being taken to promote theatre education in the United States.

Similar to the recent push for theatre education is a rise in homeschooling in America. Homeschooling has been on the rise domestically for several years now, continuing to grow between 2% and 8% annually. It is now estimated …

The Significance Of Quality Creative Writing In Children’S Literature: A Practical Application Of Children’S Literature In An Educational Context, Nicole M. Wittkopp

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

With it clear that children’s literature is a useful and necessary part of a modern elementary school student’s education, it follows that modern elementary educators need to have a deep understanding of children’s literature. Only by comprehensively studying quality children’s literature can an elementary school teacher effectively use such literature in teaching her students. The following contextual essay thus aims to first define quality children’s literature. Then, it attempts to uncover merits found in recognized children’s literature. Finally, it works to describe the specific tasks of a creative writer of children’s literature. Once these dimensions have been thoroughly studied, I …
