The Effectiveness Of Facilitated Web-Mediated Postpartum Depression Education And Postpartum Discharge Instructions, Yvette Rolle
The Effectiveness Of Facilitated Web-Mediated Postpartum Depression Education And Postpartum Discharge Instructions, Yvette Rolle
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Postpartum depression is a mental health mood disorder characterized by sadness and despair in patients within twelve months following birth. At the microsystem level of care prior to the discharge of the postpartum patient, comprehensive education or screening for depressive symptoms is uncommon (Leahy-Warren, McCarthy, & Corcoran, 2012; Marsh, J. (2013). As a result, patients and relatives do not receive the education required for early depression symptom recognition. Consequently, depressive signs or symptoms often progressed in the postpartum patient without being identified, reported or treated (Abram & Curran, 2009). This background information influenced the framing of the following PICOT question: …

Session presented on Sunday, July 24, 2016: Purpose: The aim of this project was to evaluate the impact of the One Focus Model of Clinical Facilitation implemented in 2015 at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) in West Australia. The provision of clinical placement for nursing students and the delivery of quality clinical supervision is a matter of growing concern within Australian Healthcare. There are various models for clinical education and it is a challenge to employ an appropriate model. The model needs to be innovative in order to meet the needs of the healthcare facility, be supportive to the nursing …

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on Saturday, July 23, 2016 and Sunday, July 24, 2016:
A diagnosis of cancer is an extremely stressful experience for the pediatric patient and family; yet, essential education must be delivered to the patient and family during this emotional time. Nurses have a responsibility to provide education to patients and parents, but best methods for education have not been identified (Landier, Leonard, & Ruccione, 2013). The aim of this evidence-based review is to determine the current state of knowledge and develop recommendation statements regarding effective delivery of patient/family education with newly diagnosed pediatric oncology patients. Six areas of …

Session presented on Friday, July 22, 2016:
With our ever changing and increasingly complex healthcare system, there are indications that health care practice must adapt to provide safe, effective, precise, and cost effective care. This practice must start from the foundation: Interprofessional Practice made applicable through Interprofessional Education (IPE). The University of Connecticut's Urban Services Track (UST) provides the foundation upon which future healthcare professionals are able to provide interprofessional care by instilling collaborative values from a healthcare student's academic infancy. The Urban Service Track is designed to produce a cadre of well qualified health care professionals committed to serving …

Using An Object And Pattern Oriented Approach To Hydrological Modelling Teaching And Research, R.W. Vervoort, J.H.A. Guillaume, T.F.A Bishop, D. Kundu, F.F. Van Ogtrop
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Introducing hydrological modelling in undergraduate teaching is challenging, and some of this is related to the decline in STEM knowledge in students. Enabling students to confidently work with a range of hydrological models remains difficult, particularly if the goal is to make students understand the modelling process and model structures. The limited literature points to a number of educational tools that have been developed, falling into three classes: magical box fully developed GUIs with little insight into model operation; highly theoretical command line linear reservoir and unit hydrograph tools; and model tools focusing on one single model structure. Given the …
Journalists, Numeracy And Cultural Capital, Steven Harrison
Journalists, Numeracy And Cultural Capital, Steven Harrison
Numeracy
Journalists are tasked with holding power to account; often, that means evaluating and interpreting numbers. But anecdotally, journalists are ill at ease with figures. This shortcoming is worrying both in terms of the quality of news provided to the public, and the implications for informed democratic debate. This paper tests the assertion that journalism as a profession is numeracy-challenged through a small-scale study of the numeracy capabilities of journalism students. Some oft-cited reasons for these shortcomings are discussed, including the pressures of deadlines and the tyranny of the 24-hour news cycle, where the mantra of “never wrong for long” appears …

Eportfolio: The Scholarly Capstone For The Practice Doctoral Degree In Occupational Therapy, Jim Hinojosa, Tsu-Hsin Howe
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
A critical decision doctoral faculty must make is deciding what is the most appropriate capstone or terminal requirement for the practice doctorate degree that is consistent with the program’s curriculum. EPortfolios are a viable option for documenting doctoral students’ advanced knowledge and competence. After creating a professional development plan, the students record individual experiences and reflections framed by a self-selected metaphor, provide objective documentation of achievements, and verify advanced competence in a specific area in their ePortfolios. As the students construct their ePortfolios, they must engage in self-directed learning that is grounded in evidence-based and reflective practice, with a focus …

Student Rating Of Skill Performance Opportunities In Faculty-Directed Research, Carrie A. Ciro, Mary Isaacson
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
The purpose was to examine the feasibility of creating a faculty-driven research-based fieldwork (FW) I experience and to examine whether students engaged in a research-based FW I would report equivalent skill performance opportunities as students engaged in traditional FW I experiences. Twenty-four first-year occupational therapy students were given the option of choosing either a research-based FW I experience with a faculty member (n = 5) or a traditional FW I site (n = 19). The students self-reported their opportunities to perform ACOTE standards of practice related to professionalism, professional reasoning, use of sciences, and experiential learning using a Likert scale. …

Facebook Use Among African American And Hispanic Students: An Exploratory Investigation Of Perceived Academic Impact, Sathasivam Mathiyalakan, Sharon D. White, Jorge O. Brusa
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Facebook is one of the world’s leading social networking sites. It is pervasive in students’ lives and can impact their academic careers in a variety of ways. However, little research exists evaluating the use of Facebook in minority academic settings. An early step in this direction is to gain an understanding of how different student demographic groups use Facebook. An interest in further assessment of Facebook’s role in diverse segments of academia motivates the collection and analysis of Facebook-related data from minority serving institutions such as Historically Black Colleges or Universities (HBCUs) and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs). This study presents …

Strategic Shift Towards Knowledge Based Educational Management In Pakistan, Ahmad Raza, Ejaz Ahmad, Muhammad Ali
Strategic Shift Towards Knowledge Based Educational Management In Pakistan, Ahmad Raza, Ejaz Ahmad, Muhammad Ali
Business Review
Three approaches characterize the management of education in Pakistan: historical-traditional; colonial administrative; and modern western. A deficiency common to all three approaches is that a cultural mindset legitimizes their respective structures and hierarchies, leaving no room for the growth of human capital and thereby stifling creativity, innovation and adaptation to the emerging needs of society. Knowledge Economy considerations suggest that we take a different approach to education management to meet the challenges of the new millennium and transform Pakistan into a knowledge democracy.

In higher education, as many as 50% of educator preparation programs (EPPs) look to a national accreditation agency as one way to provide evidence of the rigor and quality of their programs. Although a large number of EPPs find value in the self-study and external review that come with the national accreditation process, the process itself can be daunting and time-consuming. Many look to the literature or to the accreditation experiences provided by other institutions as a means to assist their own accreditation journey. The purpose of this article is to discuss one regional, comprehensive EPP’s experiences with national accreditation, …
