A Strategic Plan To Thread Genomics Competencies Into Undergraduate Curriculum, Holly Mathis

Problem: Genomics in undergraduate nursing education has experienced slow adoption in the United States. Various approaches have been proposed but do not address barriers to successful implementation.

Methods: A strategic plan was developed to increase the amount of genetics and genomic content in the curriculum of an undergraduate nursing program. A gap analysis was performed on the curriculum revealing a paucity of content. A SWOT analysis informed the strategic plan, which included a faculty education program using the ANA/ISONG’s Essentials of Genetic and Genomic Nursing: Competencies, Curricula Guidelines and Outcome Indicators (2^nd ed.) (2009) as a foundation.

Sepsis is a significant burden to the healthcare field with 1.7 million Americans annually diagnosed with this condition. Earlier diagnosis and treatment are the most effective ways of reducing morbidity and mortality related to sepsis. The current sepsis screening tool in place at Stormont-Vail Hospital, in Topeka, Kansas, is the systemic inflammatory response (SIRS) criteria; however, this screening tool has proven to be less effective than other screening tools available. “Oh no. Could I borrow a tampon or pad?” These (or similar) words are familiar to almost everyone who has ever had a period. Even for adults, menstruation can at times be a challenge. For some schoolchildren, it can be an insurmountable obstacle to receiving an education. Students are subject to constant observation by classmates and teachers; they may not have autonomous access to a bathroom during the school day; or they may not be able to afford menstrual products. They may experience menstruation-related peer harassment, restrictive school policies, a lack of access to menstrual products, and inadequate menstruation-related education. …

We provide new evidence on the effect of adolescent health behaviors/outcomes (obesity, depression, smoking, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)) on schooling attainment using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. We take two different approaches to deal with omitted variable bias and reverse causality. Our first approach attends to the issue of reverse causality by using health polygenic scores (PGSs) as proxies for actual adolescent health. Second, we estimate the effect of adolescent health using sibling fixed-effects models that control for unmeasured genetic and family factors shared by siblings. Chronic pain and the opioid epidemic need early, upstream interventions to aim at meaningful downstream behavioral changes. A recent pain neuroscience education (PNE) program was developed and tested for middle-school students to increase pain knowledge and promote healthier beliefs regarding pain. In this study, 668 seventh-grade middle-school students either received a PNE lecture (n = 220); usual curriculum school pain education (UC) (n = 198) or PNE followed by two booster (PNEBoost) sessions (n = 250). Background: Addressing knowledge deficiencies about cancer clinical trials and biospecimen donation can potentially improve participation among racial and ethnic minorities. This paper describes the formative research process used to design a culturally-appropriate cancer clinical trials education program for African American and Latino communities. We characterized community member feedback and its integration into the program.

This Note is broken into three parts. Part I includes background information about additive manufacturing, the Maker Movement and its importance in the promotion of STEM education, and the history of copyright and patent law. Part II analyzes the development of fair use in copyright law, potential reasons that patent law has no statutory fair use defense, and one exception in patent law that is essentially fair use—the Hatch-Waxman Act, a codified version of the experimental use exception for the pharmaceutical industry. Finally, Part III offers three distinct solutions aimed at protecting educators who use 3D printing in their curriculum.

This dissertation seeks to determine whether a relationship between STEM attrition and Learned Helplessness exist in a group of first year STEM majors studied at an urban community college. STEM attrition rates have shown that 69% of the 20% of incoming STEM freshmen in associate degree programs, drop out or switch their majors to non-STEM curriculum within their first year of college (NCES, 2013). Learned helplessness is a behavioral phenomenon where some may become helpless as the conditions surrounding their success become adverse. Former foster youth face many challenges in obtaining higher education. This research project gathered data through face to face, qualitative interviews with seven former foster youth and two former child welfare workers. The purpose of this study was to identify various contributing factors that the participants identified as positive or negative reasons for obtaining higher education.

This study utilized an interview questionnaire, using open ended questions to gather personal insight and develop a better understanding from the perspectives of the nine participants. Each former foster youth shared their own personal experiences of being in the foster care system. Both former …

An evidence-based practice (EBP) project was implemented in a primary care setting to decrease Hemoglobin A1c (HgbA1c) levels and increase self-efficacy in Type II Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) diagnosed individuals. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 30.3 million adults have diabetes in the United States, and one in four do not know they have it (CDC, 2017). It is a disease that can be managed and reversed with standardized self-management education. Early pregnancy is a challenge for girls in Kenya that often has immediate effects on their educational opportunities, future implications for their social, health, and economic outcomes, and negative impacts on their children. For girls to achieve well-being in early and late adolescence, no single-sector intervention—whether education, health, wealth creation, or prevention of violence—will be adequate. This paper examines two sources of conflict within the literature on education in liberal political theories: the proper justifications for a state-mandated education and the necessary standard for education in a liberal state. After arguing that a liberal state must offer a child-centered justification for the universal mandate and uphold an equality standard of education, this paper proceeds to examine two common objections to such a system of compulsory education in a liberal state. However, many schools, like the one in this study, do not include social and emotional learning (SEL) in their curricula or tiered intervention frameworks. This essay studies the dynamic between ethnic minorities and majority in the Vietnamese education system. By examining the appearance and representation of ethnic minorities in national literature curriculum, textbooks, and examinations, the analysis reflects the government's perspectives regarding the “appropriate” portrait of ethnic minorities' heritage and relationship with the majority. The study finds that Vietnamese education framework and content comply with the national construct of a Vietnamese identity across ethnicities. Even though the relationship between the health of infants/children and future outcomes has been established in many studies, little evidence has shown the impact of adolescent health. We extend the literature by exploiting the data from Add Health. We show that poor adolescent health has a significantly negative influence on adulthood outcomes. Among the health problems, mental illnesses have significantly persistent effects. Though specific diagnoses can predict general health measure, they are to some extent independent. We further explore the mediators linking health measures and educational attainment. The validity and effect size of the hypothesized mediators are also tested.
