The following project shows the development of a personalized drawing curriculum that will encourage students to become art advocates. The curriculum is based upon art history and is designed for students to relate historical ideas to their own lives. This personalization will help students learn more about art as a form of communication. Through this art experience, students will see the value of art in their own education and it is hoped that in the future, when these students are adults they will be advocates for the arts.

Many research studies show that schools play an important role in constructing gendered identities of girls and boys in western contexts. In Pakistan, there are research studies on the construction of gender in textbooks but studies on the role of schools are either unreported or unavailable. To address this gap in the literature, an exploratory study was carried out in public sector schools in the urban and semi-urban areas of Karachi. Metropolitan-Micropolitan Difference In Available Labor Force Characteristics: Three Great Plains Labor Basins, Michael Walker, Brett Zollinger

This study explores differences in labor availability characteristics among those living in metropolitan and micropolitan areas. Data used in this study are from surveys of adults in two adjacent Midwestern states and from three separate labor basins. Primary patterns under examination include wage demands, benefit demands, distance willing to commute for a job, perceived underemployment and entrepreneurial propensity. Bivariate analyses show no relationship between basin size and entrepreneurial propensity nor between basin size and willingness to commute. However, basin size has significant influence on four of the seven dependent variables, even after controlling for many sociodemographic characteristics. In multivariate analyses, …

The purposed study examined the changes in positive and negative social interactions based on parent implementation and non-implementation in the Developmental, Individual-Difference, Relationship-Based (DIR) program designed for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Nine participants were randomly selected and assigned to a DIR treatment group and a control group. The study was conducted over an eight week period. Overall, the statistical analysis of the implementation of the DIR program at home did not yield a significant change in positive social interaction skills. This article connects two of Dewey’s generic traits of existence—stability and precariousness—to four elements specified in his preface to Democracy and Education (democracy, evolution, industrialization and the experimental method) and one element specified in his preface to How We Think (childhood). It argues that Dewey’s metaphysics of stability and precariousness is implicit in his philosophy of education and provides a unifying aspect to his philosophy of education that is relevant to the modern world. The article then briefly looks at whether Dewey developed a metaphysics at all and concludes that Dewey did indeed develop a metaphysics—a new metaphysics of human …

Urban coyote (Canis latrans) management is often complicated, but the technical portion of any management program is only one part of the equation. The use of lethal (traps, snares, shooting, toxicants) and non-lethal (exclusion, guard animals, husbandry practices, harassment) coyote management strategies can be successful, less than successful, or not successful depending on the appropriate match of technical skill and technology available in a particular situation. Research shows that mathematically gifted students learn differently from their same age group peers. They require curriculum to be differentiated to meet their specific learning styles (Johnson, 2006). Studies have shown that formal instruction in elementary school classrooms often lacks challenge for the gifted learner since courses in regular classrooms sometimes have a relatively narrow range of topics, minimal investigation of concepts, repeated drill and practice, and yearly repetition (Fello, 2004). Achievement Within An Accelerated Christian Education School, Susan E. Verhaalen

The purpose of this study is to provide achievement data regarding children who study the ACE curriculum at a West Virginia Christian School and compare it to data of children attending public school in Wood County West Virginia. Findings show that no differences emerged among years or grades within the WVCS. Compared to the Wood County Public Schools achievement criteria, WVCS grade levels met or exceeded that criterion 17.9% of the time. Conversely, 82.1% of the time, WVCS failed to meet the Wood County Public School achievement criteria.

A Qualitative Study Of The Self -Concept Of Underprivileged Adolescents Attending Ryves Youth Center At Etling Hall, Kristy Ann Miller

Using a qualitative approach, this study provided interpretative analysis of the self-concept of underprivileged adolescents attending Ryves Youth Center at Etling Hall, a youth center located in Terre Haute, Indiana. The researcher used triangulation to compare and contrast participant observations, volunteer comments, and adolescent interviews to form a theory about their level of self-concept. The researcher then referred to the data collected during the literature review to compare the self-concept of economically disadvantage youth with their more affluent peers. Through this comparison, it was found that while the research supports the theory that adolescents from poverty-stricken environments tend to show …

Mothers And Non-Mothers: Gendering The Discourse Of Education In South Asia, Nita Kumar

This essay brings together and complicates three stories within South Asian education history by gendering them. Thus modern education was actively pursued by mothers for their sons; indigenous education should be understood as continuing at home; and women were crucial actors in men's reform and nationalism efforts through both collaboration and resistance. Gendered history should go beyond the separate story of girls and women, or the understanding of women as mothers and mothers as the nation, to see these three processes as gendered. The essay argues for the coming together of historical and anthropological arguments and for using literature imaginatively.

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore experiences that undergraduate students and recent graduates who are White social justice activists for Africa perceive as contributing to their development as activists committed to addressing humanitarian crises in Africa and how they interpret these experiences. In-depth interviews were conducted with six undergraduate students, or recent graduates, who considered themselves social justice activists for Africa and who identified with White culture more strongly than any other ethnic culture. This study examines stress in first-year college students at a faith-based institution and to determine whether social support, gender, involvement in intercollegiate athletics, academic achievement, or religiosity were factors that affect or buffer the negative effects of stress. Using data collected from approximately 200 first-year students at a Midwestern faith-based institution, the study investigated particular student and social support factors that may be associated with the kind of stress that can prevent students from achieving to their potential. Internal-reliability tests and factor analyses revealed two distinct forms of stress, one labeled internally-sourced stressors and the other externally-sourced stressors. Regressing the …

In this article we attempt to complicate traditional--and, we argue, limited and exclusionary--definitions of interdisciplinarity as the bringing into dialogue of established disciplines without questioning the parameters and practices of those disciplines. We propose that interdisciplinarity instead might mean teaching and learning among, between, and in the midst of those of innate or learned capacities--not only college faculty but also students and staff. To illustrate this more radical iteration of interdisciplinarity, we draw on a range of definitions of the key terms, “discipline” and “faculty,” and we offer a case study of a workshop we co-facilitated in which we brought …

The need for further investigation into the influence of a mental health diagnosis on a client's self-perception is grounded in ethical, clinical, and financial concerns. This study examines the correlation between self-knowledge of a mental health diagnosis and length of time since being diagnosed, with various aspects of self-concept measured by: the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (SES), the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE), and the MacArthur Subjective Status Scale (SSS). Many people supporting SIDS parents tend to feel uncomfortable around them and thus avoid the grieving family altogether.
