Surveying Environmental Attitudes, Behavior And Knowledge At A Christian Liberal Arts University: Exploring Faith, Stewardship, And The "New Ecological Paradigm", Kathryn R. Rudy

A survey of undergraduate students (N=208) at a private, Christian university assessed environmental attitude with the New Ecological Paradigm (NEP), environmental knowledge with the National Environment Education & Training Foundation NEEFT)/Roper Survey, and self-reported environmental behaviors. Some additional survey components explored the relationships of Christian faith and environmental attitudes of students. Sampling occurred among students in a few select classes and via all-campus student email announcements for voluntary and anonymous responses. This survey can serve in program and curriculum development, survey tool development and as a benchmark study for Taylor University.

This research used a literary-theoretical approach to guide investigation of the once-popular column titled “John Turnipseed,” which was published for more than 60 years in the Indiana Prairie Farmer magazine. As the fictional author, Turnipseed entertained thousands of rural readers through his humorous first-person narration of interactions and adventures on and about his Indiana farm in the early twentieth century. The research focused specifically on the 51 Turnipseed columns published in the year 1926, a pivotal era in U.S. agriculture as well as American society. Classroom Motivational Climate In Online And Face-To-Face Undergraduate Courses: The Interplay Of Gender And Course Format, Yan Yang, Yoon-Jung Cho, Angela Watson

In this study, the role of gender and course format in college students’ perceptions of classroom motivational climate (i.e., sense of classroom community and perceived classroom goal structure) was examined. Participants were 722 college students from a variety of majors at a comprehensive Midwest American university. Female students felt a stronger sense of community and perceived lower levels of performance-approach goal structure in online classes than their male counterparts experienced. Male students perceived the face-to-face classes as being more communal and less performance-approach oriented than the females did. Western society defines male and female sex from physiological attributes (e.g., genitals and chromosomes), this dichotomous view of gender is referred as gender binary.

Problems with Gender Binary

• Variations in sex and gender do not fit in the male/female, masculine/feminine dichotomy (Wiseman & Davidson, 2011).

• Diamond (2002) defined, “gender” is the social and cultural expectation of how females and males should identify themselves, how they think, behave (e.g., ‘typical’ female/male acts in a feminine/masculine ways) and feel (e.g., prefers heterosexual attraction). This gender binary socialization pressure restricts individuals’ potential.

Curiosity is a necessary component to intellectual growth (Engel, 2009) and fundamental to learning (Schmitt & Lahroodi, 2008), but it is unclear how to purposefully grow an individuals curiosity (Smith, 2011). Therefore, the purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationship between problem-based learning and curiosity in engineeringEducation. Results from a series of regression analyses did not support a predictive relationship between problem-based learning and curiosity. Further data analysis suggest problem-based learning environment should be a categorical rather than continuous variable.

East African pastoralists and their livestock are vulnerable to alterations in resource availability and disease transmission and frequently face poor access to livestock health services. Government veterinarians tasked with guiding health services must prioritize livestock health risks and allocate limited resources across disparate ecosystems with different disease threats. To identify livestock diseases of concern and strategies for improving herd health and resilience, we conducted community focus groups with pastoralists and interviewed pastoralist household leaders, village extension officers, and government veterinary officials in south-central Tanzania, an area experiencing rapid population growth and environmental change. Indiana’s Family Nutrition Program (FNP) is a nutrition education program that offers education at no cost to participants who qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The medium term survey is a paper and pencil based tool that asks participants 17 questions about their usual dietary intake. This survey is completed by participants before and after receiving the Indiana FNP Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) four core lessons: MyPlate, Label Reading, Grains, and Fruits & Vegetables. The purpose of this qualitative research study was to explore the perceptions of former and current foster youth about the barriers they encountered during their K-12 education, and to learn how they overcame these obstacles and achieved academic success. The study included in-depth interviews of 11 participants, all of whom were current or former foster youth who were enrolled or had plans to enroll in a community college or 4-year university. Qualitative insight is provided through reports of what teacher remediation looks like in schools, what cultural influences are revealed, and what outcomes might be attributed to school culture.
