Tuned In: Television And The Teaching Of Writing, Bronwyn Thomas Williams
Tuned In: Television And The Teaching Of Writing, Bronwyn Thomas Williams
Doctoral Dissertations
College writing teachers often consider the reading and writing experiences students have had in elementary and high school classes as their only relevant discursive influences. When they do so they risk ignoring what is perhaps the most powerful and ubiquitous form of public discourse and communication in our society: television. This dissertation explores how the pervasive discourse of popular culture on television influences the ways in which incoming college students perceive and engage in writing and reading when they enter a first-year composition course. Through interviews with students and observations of them watching television, I have studied the skills students …

In 1874, father became a teacher in the private school on Odder Mark, a short distance from the village of Odder. The pupils were both farm children and the children of master artisans in Odder. I do not know . whether father built the school himself, but I know that he came to own it, and when he married …

A Descriptive Case Study Of A Single Innovation’S Effect On Multiple Literacy Initiatives In Arkansas, Deborah N. Williams
A Descriptive Case Study Of A Single Innovation’S Effect On Multiple Literacy Initiatives In Arkansas, Deborah N. Williams
Theses and Dissertations
When schools implement high quality classroom instruction, research-based interventions, networks of support at multiple levels, and a strategic plan for monitoring change elements, students are provided a range of opportunities that promote successful learning. This descriptive case study examined Reading Recovery's effect on the acceleration of the change process in selected elementary schools in Arkansas. Two purposeful samplings were used to investigate, discover, understand, and gain insight. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected to develop the description. Data-driven decisions toward the building of a comprehensive early literacy school reform model for accelerating change were also examined in relation to reading …

School Life On The Mississippi: An Inquiry Into The Impact Of The Louisiana Reform Movement Related To Standards In World History Instruction In Three Secondary School Settings., Michael Joseph Schramm
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of standards on the instruction of world history in three secondary school settings. Contact with the Department of Education of the State of Louisiana found that the implementation of standards had only begun in 1997. After a grace period for implementation, the inaugural testing of the accountability system for these standards occurred in the spring of 2000. Therefore, this study became an exploratory investigation into the use of standards as they impact world history instruction. The first research question was designed to assist the researcher in exploring the influence that …

Elementary Classroom Placement Of Multiples, Robin Keller Shamsaie
Elementary Classroom Placement Of Multiples, Robin Keller Shamsaie
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Parents of multiples seek practical advice in parenting. One area of great concern expressed by parents of multiples is in appropriate classroom placement decisions for their children. A great deal of anecdotal literature and folklore exists, which suggests placement in separate classrooms is best, so that each multiple can develop as an individual, rather than part of a set. There is, however, no research that supports the appropriateness or effectiveness of this belief. Research does support the merit of assessing each case individually when making classroom placement recommendations (Emmons, 1976; Dreyer, 1991; Hay, 1991; LeRoux, 1992; Segal, 1992). This study …

Alcohol Consumption Patterns, Death Attitudes, And Personal Meaning Among College Women, Christopher Hugh Nolan
Alcohol Consumption Patterns, Death Attitudes, And Personal Meaning Among College Women, Christopher Hugh Nolan
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Viktor Frankl's logotheory proposes that personal meaning in life and the attitudes people hold toward their own subjective mortality play important mediating roles in the way individuals choose to view and conduct their lives. The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of Frankl's existential model in explaining problem drinking among college women by determining whether there are group differences in personal meaning and death attitudes as a function of alcohol consumption patterns. The sample consisted of 154 college women whose patterns of alcohol consumption allowed for participant classification into one of three groups: (a) non-drinkers (n = …
The Framing Of Truancy : A Study Of Non-Attendance Policy As A Form Of Social Exclusion Within Western Australia, Jan Gray
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Truancy is a product of socially constructed knowledge. The final product of this knowledge provides insight into the defining features of current societal beliefs, values and fears, becoming a powerful framing influence for definitions of acceptable patterns of school attendance and behaviour. In this sense, the perceived incidence of truancy within a community has far more impact on the creation and enactment of public policy associated with young people who do not regularly attend school than the incidence itself. This does not deny the incidence of truancy, nor the empirical data indicating correlates of truancy, illiteracy, crime, poverty and unemployment. …

The General Board Of Education In Western Australia 1847-1871: Its Establishment And Performance, Derek Jowle
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This thesis is a history of the politics of education in nineteenth century Western Australia with a particular focus on educational administration. It traces the activities of the educational pioneers in Western Australia and in particular synthesises research material from a wide variety of sources to demonstrate and explain: •How and why these pioneers established an education system in Western Australia; •The difficulties faced by the pioneers and how they overcame those difficulties; •Why the General Board of Education ("the Board"), which was formed by the early pioneers, was established in 1847; •How and why the Board was terminated in …
Influence Of Home And School Environments On The Academic Performance Of Chinese-Australian And Anglo-Australian Students Studying At An Academically-Oriented High School In Perth, Western Australia, Ranbir Singh Malik
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Although minority status has been associated with low academic achievement, the “high Asian achieving syndrome" remains as one of the unresolved sociological puzzles. Consistent evidence suggests that regardless of the family status, children from the Asian migrant families, settled in the industrialised countries, tend to perform academically better than their counterparts from the dominant group. This disparity is attributed to a number of factors, which taken separately, do not address this complex issue. In Australia little research has been done to compare the home environment and school experiences of children coming from Chinese-Australian and Anglo-Australian families even though the number …

The Use Of Alternative School Placements For Disciplinary Interventions With At-Risk Students, Tammie N. Feathers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate effective ways of providing educational services for at-risk students who are repeatedly placed out of the regular classroom into an alternative school. Characteristics of both settings were investigated in terms of meeting student needs to determine what ingredients might be missing from either or both settings that should be implemented to help these students succeed. The research was qualitative and used a case study design. Primary data were gathered from interviews with five students placed in an alternative school setting and interviews with teachers and administrators in both the regular school and …

The behaviors and environmental aspects examined are those determined by research findings to foster and enhance participant growth and development. Cluster sampling was used for this study of 25 classes representing 5 divisions of the curriculum at 3 institutions. The instruments were administered to 277 students and 25 teachers during the spring of 1999. The null hypotheses for main effects of teacher, student, and classroom characteristics were tested on the …
