A Framework Of Language Use In Reference To People With Disabilities: People-First, Disability-Implicit, And Disability-First Language In A School Setting, Lindsey Therese Back

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Scientists have often overlooked the language used to refer to people with disabilities as a method for excluding them, as language reflects attitudes and potential actions (Blaska, 1993; Froschl et al, 1984; Zola, 1993) . Recent legislation illustrates efforts to prevent use of derogatory terms in state laws and regulations (New Jersey Legislature, 2010), but little research to date has explored actual linguistic references to people with disabilities. This study uses qualitative interviews with students, parents, teachers, and administrators to explore the language used to reference students with disabilities. Results offer the first framework of language used to refer to …

Arts-Based Research In Education: A Review, Pamela Smithbell Nov 2010

Arts-Based Research In Education: A Review, Pamela Smithbell

The Qualitative Report

What is the difference between research that uses art, research about art, and research through art? Is arts-based educational research (ABER) a method or medium? What does arts-based research look like? How is it used and evaluated? Editors Cahnmann-Taylor and Siegesmund recruited an arresting array of contributors: paradigmatic pioneers, noted artist-scholars, as well as newcomers to the field. This volume condenses the history, unique features, social contributions, and controversy into a readable, scholarly, and practical text. Each artist-researcher develops a chapter comprised of multiple elements: biography, explanation of intent, critique, photos and open-ended questions. True to ABER epistemology, these contributors …

She's Leaving Home: The Effect Of College Experiences On Homeschooled Students, Henry Thomas Smiley

Theses and Dissertations

Most existing homeschool research focuses on one of two concerns: the efficacy of home education and the socialization of the homeschooled student. The purpose of this study was to examine how the beliefs, values, and worldviews of homeschooled students were affected by their experiences at the post-secondary level, specifically in the multicultural environment of public four-year colleges and universities. Data were collected through interviews with eleven participants: six homeschooling parents and five homeschooled students. Homeschooled students who formed close relationships with students unlike themselves and who were involved in leadership roles in their respective post-secondary institutions seemingly assimilated different worldviews …

The State Of Latinos And Education In Massachusetts: 2010, Billie Gastic, Melissa Colón, Andrew Flannery Aguilar Sep 2010

The State Of Latinos And Education In Massachusetts: 2010, Billie Gastic, Melissa Colón, Andrew Flannery Aguilar

Gastón Institute Publications

Schools are critical public institutions for Latino youth in the Commonwealth, who make up 15% of the public school enrollment in the state. Sadly, despite leading the nation in student achievement, Massachusetts is still leaving its Latino students behind. This is evident from several indicators of Latino students’ academic success. School attendance is a significant concern since Latino students lose an average of more than two and a half weeks of school each year due to absences. Latino students are also frequently disciplined for behavioral is- sues at school. Latinos account for 23% of the incidents that result in disciplinary …

Does Competition Improve Public School Efficiency: A Spatial Analysis, Kaustav Misra Aug 2010

Does Competition Improve Public School Efficiency: A Spatial Analysis, Kaustav Misra

Theses and Dissertations

Proponents of educational reform often call for policies to increase competition between schools. It is argued that market forces naturally lead to greater efficiencies, including improved student learning, when schools face competition. In many parts of the country, public schools experience significant competition from private schools; however, the literature is not clear as to whether public versus private competition generates significant improvements in technical efficiency. A major hurdle for researchers examining this issue is determining a workable definition of competition by which they can measure the degree of competition within local markets. I address this challenge by developing a School …

Social Networks And Beliefs Of Mexican-American Parents As Predictors Of Parent Involvement, Maria Filomena Leo Aug 2010

Social Networks And Beliefs Of Mexican-American Parents As Predictors Of Parent Involvement, Maria Filomena Leo

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Parents interact with school officials as social actors, with the cultural and social capital they possess. The school as a social institution operates within given processes to deliver educational services. The needs of both the parent and the school system may not always be suited to a harmonious relationship: still, it is possible to build a system to close that gap. In such a system each can reach across to help one another. This happens when schools understand the social forces that motivate parents to become involved with schools for the sake of their children. This study surveyed Mexican-American parents …

Visionary Of Control: The Efficiency, Expertise, And Exclusion Of Alexander James Inglis, Heidi Tilney Kramer Jul 2010

Visionary Of Control: The Efficiency, Expertise, And Exclusion Of Alexander James Inglis, Heidi Tilney Kramer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Alexander James Inglis was the key contributor to changes enacted in education during the Progressive era. He instituted an administrative and curricular hierarchy in order to create social organization during a chaotic time in American history, thus advancing professionalism in teaching and systematizing a future workforce - teaching previously had no standards, and throngs of immigrants overwhelmed the school system. While necessary at the time, this system of centralization, homogenization, and sorting continues to result in exclusion in secondary education and middle schools. Categorization is Inglis' hallmark in his work in education, following Frederick W. Taylor's managerial practices, and he …

Wild Pansies, Trojan Horses, And Others: International Teaching And Learning As Bricolage, David B. Starr-Glass

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Educational change, predictable or unanticipated, occurs when student populations are altered. When an American college started an international program in Prague, it was anticipated that educational practice would change. To understand the implications for teaching, learning, and practice mentors explored the new educational landscape. The concept of bricolage informed much of that exploration and this paper considers bricolage, summarizes research outcomes, and reflects on the opportunity and ethics of engagement with Other.

Predictors Of Pap Smear Utilization Among Female Mexican American College Students, Sylvia M. Morales May 2010

Predictors Of Pap Smear Utilization Among Female Mexican American College Students, Sylvia M. Morales

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The Pap smear is a diagnostic screening test that detects abnormal cell growth, which may lead to cervical cancer. Pap smears are performed at a consistently lower frequency among Hispanic than non-Hispanic American White women, potentially contributing to a 70% higher rate of cervical cancer in Hispanic Americans. This study examined possible predictors of Pap smear utilization among 165 Mexican American female college students aged 18 to 30 attending the University of Texas-Pan American situated near Texas’s United States – Mexico border. Significant predictors were: recommendation by a health care professional; sexual activity; mother’s educational level; and external locus of …
