Ai As A Tool For Education Equity: A Review Of Recent Literature, Jace F. Peterkin-Rawls, J.D.

Journal of Race, Gender, and Ethnicity

This article addresses the challenges faced by one in five children in the United States who have learning or thinking differences, disabilities, or disorders. Despite existing resources like Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and 504 plans, many students with learning disabilities struggle due to insufficient personalization, limited teacher support, and inadequate funding. The article explores the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance current educational resources and better support these students. It provides an overview of common learning disabilities and existing support mechanisms, followed by a discussion of the ethical implications of AI in education from four scholars. The article then …

Balancing Interests: Ai, Business & Human Rights, And The Legal Landscape In An Era Of Disruption, Jena Martin, Ritu Narula

Faculty Articles

On October 30, 2023, the Biden Administration issued a sweeping executive order espousing a policy to advance the development and use of artificial intelligence ("Al") while also establishing safeguards across the federal government. The Executive Order marked the U.S. government's largest move forward related to the regulation of Al. The Order also represents the government's latest effort to advance equity, privacy, and national security in the use of AI systems. Moreover, the Order comes at a time when governments around the world are wrestling with the impact of AI and its disruptive effect, not just on markets, but on society …

Why Districts Should Have The Say: Comparing Teacher Merit Pay And Student Outcomes At The State Level, Heather R. Dougan Jan 2024

Why Districts Should Have The Say: Comparing Teacher Merit Pay And Student Outcomes At The State Level, Heather R. Dougan

Pepperdine Policy Review

The literature surrounding education connects merit pay systems that compensate teachers for their performance to improvements in student outcomes. Teacher payment systems are important to the economics of education policy, not only because teachers are paid using these systems, but also because they are a tool to improve student outcomes. There are criticisms concerning the implementation of a merit pay system including inequality, subjectivity, and unintended consequences. Data on student achievement based on the National Report Card of 2022 and performance-based pay systems seem to have inconsistent implications for the merit of a performance pay system. Considering this, letting the …

A Cultural Shift: Restorative Justice Relation On School Discipline And Educator Perception And Practices With Middle School Students, Hector Macias Jan 2024

A Cultural Shift: Restorative Justice Relation On School Discipline And Educator Perception And Practices With Middle School Students, Hector Macias

CGU Theses & Dissertations

As restorative justice practices (RJP) in educational environments remain relatively novel, there has been limited research on its long-term effectiveness. In districts that allocated substantial resources to RJP, reports from personnel suggest a direct correlation between RJP implementation and a decrease in suspensions, diminished truancy rates, and an overall improvement in school climates. Nevertheless, further investigation is essential, particularly at the middle school level, to explore the link between RJP and institutionalized, non-punitive, relationship-centered approaches. This research extended the knowledge base of disciplinary practices, delving into the educators’ perceptions of RJP on fostering a school-wide restorative ideology.

Employing a convergent …

From Garcetti To Kennedy: Teachers, Coaches, And Free Speech At Public Schools, Emily Gold Waldman Jan 2024

From Garcetti To Kennedy: Teachers, Coaches, And Free Speech At Public Schools, Emily Gold Waldman

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This Article analyzes Kennedy's implications for educators' free speech rights at school. It is important to note, at the outset, that the Kennedy majority's description of the actual facts at issue is highly debatable. Indeed, the majority presented a sanitized account of what actually occurred on the ground, minimizing the highly public nature of Kennedy's prayers and the football players' involvement in them. That said, if we take the facts as the majority presented them, and then move to the majority's assessment of those facts, we emerge with an interesting gloss on Garcetti. Synthesizing Garcetti and Kennedy points toward a …

On The Principles And Ends Of Education: A Thomistic Approach, Keith Parkinson Jan 2024

On The Principles And Ends Of Education: A Thomistic Approach, Keith Parkinson

Theses and Dissertations--Philosophy

This dissertation develops an account of the nature of education from a Thomistic point of view. The thesis is that education is best understood as ‘human growth’—growth, because it is the natural development of potentialities inherent within the human person toward full actualization, and human, because it pertains in particular to those faculties of reason that are unique to human beings among all natural creatures, the intellect and will. The first three chapters provide an overview of Thomistic anthropology and virtue theory, from which I conclude that the final goal toward which all genuinely educational activity aims is the speculative …

An Intersectional Examination Of Adverse Childhood Experiences And Educational Outcomes In Children In The U.S., Josalie C. Condon

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

Background: Research has found that Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have been shown to lead to a myriad of issues including struggling in school. The more ACEs a child experiences, the worse their outcome tends to be, including school outcomes. However, critics of ACE research have argued that not all ACEs weigh the same and intersectionality needs to be considered. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the relationship between ACEs and school outcome issues. These school outcome variables are analyzed, first with a binary ACE variable, then with ACE scale variable, to test whether more ACEs lead to worse outcomes. And, …

A Review Of The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act In Kentucky Schools System, Spencer Collins Jan 2024

A Review Of The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act In Kentucky Schools System, Spencer Collins

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

The federal government's role in education has been center stage for the past decade. Policy actors on the right call for a complete deconstruction of the federal Department of Education (ED). In today's partisan fighting over government funding, the topic of education services is critical. With further investigations into education services provided by federal funding, one vulnerable population that needs to be safeguarded is those students with disabilities. Protecting those students with disabilities and ensuring equal access to education and resources provided for non-disabled students should be one of the highest priorities of policy actors within the education sphere today. …

Critical Race Theory Model Measure And Implementation In Curriculum, Taifha Natalee Alexander, Ahilan Arulanantham

Faculty Publications

(Excerpt)

This memorandum aims to explain the purpose of the following model measure. The proposed legislation would preserve the freedom of teachers to teach—and students to learn—about racism, including its history and on-going effects in this country. It does this by providing a framework through which state governments can encourage the teaching and learning of Critical Race Theory ("CRT") principles as a lens through which to teach and learn about racial inequality in America, its history, and its current manifestations, to enhance K-12 public school curricula.

We believe the model measure should be of interest to a broad range of …

Increasing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Self-Efficacy In A Rural Primary Care Clinic Using Telehealth Education, Courtney Mccarty

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that causes a burden to people with the illness, to their families, and to the healthcare system worldwide. It is a preventable noncommunicable disease that causes significant economic global impacts, especially in areas of rurality and low socioeconomic status. Despite its prevalence in the United States, type 2 diabetes mellitus still poses increased rates of complications and mortality due to ineffective management, improper skills, and lack of knowledge to care for oneself. In addition, this population often lacks self-efficacy or the belief that they can manage and perform tasks to promote desired …

Curriculum, Knowledge, And Power: A Critical Race Approach To Content Analysis Of Social Studies Textbooks, Eliza G. Ray

Honors Theses

This study uses Critical Race Theory (CRT) as a theoretical framework to examine the portrayal of the U.S. Revolutionary War in three 5th grade social studies textbooks approved by the state of Florida’s curriculum standards. Textbooks have been a focal point for political debate, most recently influenced more by politicians than by educators. A qualitative rubric was developed to evaluate the textbooks, examining the extent to which they include a CRT telling of the Revolutionary War. This rubric was informed by the tenets of CRT in educational research as described by Solorzano and Yosso (2002). Consistent themes arose from the …
