A Design For Advanced Preparation Of Educational Researchers. (Volumes I And Ii), Fon R. Belcher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Statement of the problem. The central problem of this study was twofold: (1) to determine whether the educational research preparation offered by selected colleges and universities bore out the findings of critics, and (2) to synthesize and synergize opinions and facts regarding educational research, as expressed by men active in the field, into a flexible proposal whereby individual student's programs in research preparation could be "custom-made" to suit their most obvious research needs. (Abstract shortened.)
Alaska's Urban Boarding Home Program, Judith Kleinfield
Alaska's Urban Boarding Home Program, Judith Kleinfield
ISER Reports
In Alaska's Boarding Home Program, rural students from small villages without high schools attend secondary school by living with a boarding home family. Most rural students in this program are Eskimo or Athabascan Indian, and the majority are placed with white families in urban areas. This study attempts to describe the subtle interpersonal tensions that develop in the boarding home parent-student relationship. It also attempts to identify the characteristics of successful and unsuccessful boarding home parents and ways of matching parents to students in a manner that maximizes mutual satisfaction. The focus on the characteristics of boarding home parents who …

The Impact Of Programed Tutoring On The Reading Achievement Of Lower Achieving Second Grade Children From Low-Income Areas, Keith Eugene Hartwig
The Impact Of Programed Tutoring On The Reading Achievement Of Lower Achieving Second Grade Children From Low-Income Areas, Keith Eugene Hartwig
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Substantial numbers of children from low-income areas do not learn to read sufficiently well to enjoy success in school. There is no published empirical evidence regarding the use of programed tutoring in reading at the second grade level. The impact of programed tutoring on the reading achievement of second grade children must be demonstrated and not inferred from research at the first grade level. This is true, not only in terms of criterion referenced instruments related to the tutoring materials, but in terms of normative referenced instruments designed to sample reading skills. Does programed tutoring increase reading achievement, affect children …

A Study To Determine Reasons Why Lds Students Were Not Enrolled In Lds Seminary In The Southern Alberta Seminary District During 1970-71, Robert Owen Mcclung
Theses and Dissertations
Religious education in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as given by the seminaries is to help youth achieve a meaningful testimony that God lives, Jesus is the Christ, and Joseph Smith is a prophet of God. The purpose of this study was to determine why some youth were not taking advantage of this training by enrolling in seminary.
It was determined that the teachers were a negligible reason for lack of enrollment. Rather, the reasons stemmed more from a lack of awareness of the nature of the seminary program by some priesthood leaders, by the youth and …
Aerospace And Environmental Education As An Interdisciplinary Curriculum In The Middle School, James Brooke Madill
Aerospace And Environmental Education As An Interdisciplinary Curriculum In The Middle School, James Brooke Madill
All Master's Theses
This paper presents the union of aerospace and environmental education, and from their common ground draws a direct relationship with all subjects in the curriculum. This program was designed to demonstrate the feasibility of developing the middle school program around intrinsically interesting exploration in two fields of science which are of extreme importance in the world today. Following examples of possible connections with other areas in the curriculum a method of presentation is explored.
The Generalization Of Moral Judgment: An Exploratory Study, Frederick Charles Mccarthy
The Generalization Of Moral Judgment: An Exploratory Study, Frederick Charles Mccarthy
All Master's Theses
This paper presents a quasi-experimental study testing the consistency hypothesis of Lawrence Kohlberg with regard to the acquisition of moral qualities and ability to form moral judgment in fifth graders. The study involves thirty-two Catholic grade school children at the fifth grade level. Its scope is limited by Kohlberg 's reluctance to release information for data analysis. Recommendations include additional testing to confirm the trend of the limited sample, and suggestions for revised methodological changes in the experiment.

A Longitudinal Comparison Of Attitudes And Achievement Of Sixth Grade Children In Traditional And Modern Mathematics Programs, Magit E. Mcguire
All Master's Theses
New mathematics has been part of the elementary
school curriculum long enough to be seriously evaluated by
educators. The problem investigated was as follows: has
the new mathematics improve children's mathematical attitudes
and achievement?
The purpose of the study was to investigate whether
sixth graders who have attended school throughout the modern
mathematics era have achievement levels and attitudes that
are different from sixth graders who attended school when
the more traditional programs were offered.
Evaluation Of Three Self Report Measures In The Early Identification Of Underachievers, Jane Melville
Evaluation Of Three Self Report Measures In The Early Identification Of Underachievers, Jane Melville
All Master's Theses
Three self report measures were employed to identify the
underachievers among 51 third graders. Ability was assessed by the
California Test of Mental Maturity. Achievement was measured by the
Stanford Achievement Test and final GPA. Results were nonsignificant,
but in the predicted direction. Self reports of students average or
below in ability, SAT, or GPA were significantly lower, although most
of these students were not defined as underachievers.

The National Council For The Social Studies And The American Historical Association, 1945-1970: Convergence Or Divergence?, Garth Howard Magee
All Master's Theses
The study focused on three areas of secondary level social
studies education: teacher preparation, integration of the
social studies, and the purposes of social studies education.
The main sources used for the study were presidential addresses
by the leaders of both groups, editorials in the official journal
of each organization, committee reports by each group, and
various pamphlets, books, and articles by committees or officials
of each organization. Conclusions and recommendations were
stated at the end of each chapter.
The Relationship Of Eye-Hand Dominance To Visual-Motor Performance, Terry Livingstone Mitchell
The Relationship Of Eye-Hand Dominance To Visual-Motor Performance, Terry Livingstone Mitchell
All Master's Theses
Thirty-six crossed eye-hand dominant and an equal number of lateral dominant fifth grade students were compared on mirrortracing and handwriting tasks. Results showed that being crossed dominant did not have a significant effect on either handwriting or mirror-tracing when the preferred hand was used. The commonly held theory that being crossed eye-hand dominant is a handicap to normal language development was not supported by this study.
The Role Of Stimulus And Label Familiarity In Concept Learning, David W. Philips
The Role Of Stimulus And Label Familiarity In Concept Learning, David W. Philips
All Master's Theses
Performance on a concept learning task was investigated by employing familiar and unfamiliar stimulus patterns, three pretraining conditions, and two conceptual rules. Subjects were given either observation or preliminary paired associate practice in labeling shapes with meaningful or nonsense labels and were then required to solve a concept learning task to criterion. It was found that tasks involving familiar stimuli were learned more rapidly than those involving unfamiliar stimuli, and that meaningful verbal pretraining for unfamiliar stimuli resulted in more rapid learning than observation or nonsense label pretraining.

Realiability Of Koppitz's Emotional Indicators On The Human Figure Drawings Of Children, Marcus J. Miles
Realiability Of Koppitz's Emotional Indicators On The Human Figure Drawings Of Children, Marcus J. Miles
All Master's Theses
The study was designed to investigate inter-scorer
consistency and test-retest reliability of Koppitz's
"Emotional Indicator11 scoring system for human figure drawings.
Drawings were secured from 438 t hird grade pupils.
A test-retest interval of one month was employed.
Phi coefficients ranging from . 75 to . 81 were found
for inter-scorer consistency between three judges . Twenty-eight
of Koppitz 1 s 30 "Emotional Indicators" and her all
important total score category yielded test-retest phi coefficients smaller than .43.
