A Strategy For Dog-Owner Education (Response), Ian Dunbar Jan 1982

A Strategy For Dog-Owner Education (Response), Ian Dunbar

Pets Collection

I have read with interest the response by Graham Henderson of the Toronto Humane Society (lnt J Stud Anim Prob 2(6):305-309, 1981). I agree with many of his statements and am pleased that he, in turn, agreed with most of mine, although at first, this was not entirely apparent. In fact, I found Mr. Henderson's letter to be somewhat confusing, and it contained a number of inaccuracies and contradictions. So, please bear with me if I go into some detail to try to unravel the confusion.

The Effect Of Two Methods Of Instruction On Parent Child Interaction., Arlene Marie Zielanis Fulton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to compare two methods of instruction in the teaching of parent-child interaction skills. By comparing a highly structured method and a less structured method of instruction, data were compiled in order to determine the manner in which interaction skills could be most effectively taught to parents of three- and four-year old children. The study was conducted in six parishes within Louisiana and all subjects in the study were volunteers. The first method of instruction involved a highly structured approach which utilized video taped demonstrations, written materials, role play, group discussion, toys, and nine weekly …

Evaluation Of The Descriptive Validity Of Special Education Classification In Louisiana: Discriminant Analysis Of Pupil Appraisal Records., Janet Huiskamp Hansche

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Records of 575 children evaluated for special education placement were analyzed to assess the descriptive validity of classification as practiced by Louisiana pupil appraisal teams. Classification categories, assigned by the assessment teams, included No Special Class, Learning Disability, Slow Learner, Mild Mentally Retarded, and Moderate Mentally Retarded. Results of discriminant analysis were evaluated in terms of the two attributes of descriptive validity, homogeneity and logical consistency of the categories. Clinical classification was judged satisfactory in homogeneity but unsatisfactory in logical consistency. within-groups homogeneity was demonstrated by significant differences among groups on seven variables summarized by the factors of Adaptive Behavior, …

The Social Construction Of Reality In A Total Institution: An Ethnography Of A State Residential School For The Deaf., Abbie Donald Evans Jan 1982

The Social Construction Of Reality In A Total Institution: An Ethnography Of A State Residential School For The Deaf., Abbie Donald Evans

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Above all deafness constitutes a language and communication problem. A child born deaf experiences a form of double deprivation: symbolic deprivation and social interactional deprivation. Both the development of self and the construction of a world (human culture) are impeded by the lack of language. This first ethnography of a state residential school for the deaf (SSD) follows Glaser and Strauss (1967) by developing a theory from "data" systematically obtained on the field. The formulations of Goffman, Berger and Luckmann, Mead and Bernstein guided this inquiry and provided it a sense of reference. The central problem investigated in question form …

A Curriculum For Training Extension Professionals In Energy Conservation Education., Daniel Fontenot Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Energy conservation is a relatively new educational program for the Cooperative Extension Service (CES). The shortage of training programs available to CES in energy education makes it difficult to properly prepare agents for energy conservation work. The purpose of this study was to develop a curriculum for in-service training of agents engaged in energy education. The procedure for achieving this purpose was used to identify the following: (1) Fundamental concepts necessary for energy conservation education. (2) Agents' knowledge level of these concepts. (3) Agents' perceived need for these concepts. (4) Agents' training requirements. Through a mail questionnaire selected agents from …

A Study Of The Three-Level Hierarchy Of Information Processing In Reading Comprehension With Respect To Cognitive Demand., Lane Roy Gauthier Jan 1982

A Study Of The Three-Level Hierarchy Of Information Processing In Reading Comprehension With Respect To Cognitive Demand., Lane Roy Gauthier

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study was designed to study the three-level hierarchy of information processing with respect to cognitive demand. The study addressed the problem of differences between the most commonly used levels of comprehension, literal, inferential, and critical. The main types of information processing models, bottom-up, top-down, and interactive-compensatory, all accept the premise that literal processing is less cognitively demanding than inferential processing, and that inferential processing is less cognitively demanding than critical processing. In order to test whether statistically significant differences actually existed in these three levels of comprehension, fifty students were chosen and individually tested. Twenty-five fifth graders, and twenty-five …

Development Of Louisiana Public School Guidance Services, 1942-1972., Alice Hunter Chilton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine how guidance services developed in the public schools of Louisiana between 1942 and 1972. In order to understand the events of these years, it was necessary to examine the period preceding them. In the beginning of the guidance movement, social workers pioneered in assisting youth with problems associated with industrialization. Louisiana was unique in that its guidance program started within the school system. An experimental program began in the Orleans Parish Schools in 1921. It was considered effective and continued. In the 1920s vocational guidance was offered for the first time at …

A Handbook Developed To Create A Better Understanding Of The Gifted, Nan M. Hake Jan 1982

A Handbook Developed To Create A Better Understanding Of The Gifted, Nan M. Hake

All Graduate Projects

The problems encountered by gifted students when integrating into the regular self-contained classroom were studied. Parents and peers display their misunderstanding of gifted students by their innocent remarks that adversely affect them. Teachers unwittingly cause discomfort by the unchallenging tasks gifted children are expected to perform. Sixty children from the Wenatchee School District's Gifted Pull-out Program were asked to share some of their concerns pertaining to these problems. Based upon their responses and a survey of the literature, a handbook was compiled to help prevent parents, teachers and peers from misunderstanding the gifted student.

Relationship Of Two Field-Dependent - Independent Measures To Reading And Math Achievement Of Anglo-American, First-Generation Chinese- And Mexican-American Elementary School Children, Pierina Cheng-Noi Wong

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The Field-Dependence-Independence (FDI) cognitive style refers to the relative ability of an individual to perceive elements as discrete from an overall organization. It is most commonly measured by the Portable-Rod-and-Frame Test (PRFT) and the children's Embedded Figure Test (CEFT). This study was concerned with the relationship of PRFT and CEFT to the reading, language, and math achievement scores of Anglo-American, first-generation Chinese- and Mexican-American elementary school children. This study also compared PRFT and CEFT scores among the three ethnic groups and between the boys and girls. The sample for the study consisted of 90 fourth- and fifth-graders with equal numbers …
