An Interdisciplinary Discourse Between Dewey And Self-Determination Theory: Motivation In The Wake Of Monetizing Education, Jacqueline A. Goldman, Benjamin C. Heddy, Susan Laird Jan 2019

An Interdisciplinary Discourse Between Dewey And Self-Determination Theory: Motivation In The Wake Of Monetizing Education, Jacqueline A. Goldman, Benjamin C. Heddy, Susan Laird

Education and Culture

The purpose of this theoretical exposition is to bring two fields into discussion concerning the issue of motivation, in the new monetized context of education, through an encounter between John Dewey and self-determination theory. Using Dewey's Experience and Education as well as self-determination theory's most fundamental scholarship (e.g., Ryan and Deci 2000), we offer a contemporary parallel with Dewey's thoughts on "New" and "Old" education and examine it through the lens of self-determination theory. This interdisciplinary perspective combines educational psychology with philosophy of education to retheorize motivation as a critical response to the "New" educational shift toward monetization, which we …

Creative Integration And Pragmatist Optimism: Dispositions For “The Task Before Us”, Barbara S. Stengel Jan 2019

Creative Integration And Pragmatist Optimism: Dispositions For “The Task Before Us”, Barbara S. Stengel

Education and Culture

How can and will educators in any setting work with young people of all ages to enable them to develop the ability to interrogate—without denigrating—the claims of candidates, the newsmaking of media, the needs of their neighbors, and the fears of their family members? The answer I offer and defend here involves two dispositions—creative integration and pragmatist optimism—that I view as critical to the pursuit of vibrant and viable political democracy. These dispositions are, I argue, necessary to and evidence of the very possibility of a polity worthy of the "democratic" label.

What Gendered Constructs About Mathematics Do Parents Have As Their Children Begin School In Australia?, Rachelle Glynn

Education Conference Papers

This study investigated whether parents have gendered constructs related to mathematics. Parents and their kindergarten-aged children from three primary schools in Sydney were interviewed to see what their understandings of boys’ and girls’ interests and abilities in mathematics were. Parents completed the Who and Mathematics questionnaire and were interviewed to determine if there were any gendered understandings and exactly what they were. The data shows that parents believe that boys are more likely to have an aptitude and interest in mathematics. In contrast, girls are perceived as more anxious, harder workers and in addition, that they have to work harder …

Lived Experience Of Post-Licensure Nurses In A Perioperative Clinical Rotation, Amy Stahley

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

A projected deficit in the perioperative workforce of 32,000 perioperative nurses retiring by 2024, creates an inability to meet the nursing needs of the United States population. The need for experienced perioperative nurses has been increasing while the availability of nurses with perioperative education has been decreasing. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experience of post-licensure nurses who participated in a perioperative clinical rotation within their baccalaureate nursing program and did that experiential experience affect the recruitment and employment for perioperative nursing to halt the impending shortage. The integrations of Kolb’s experiential learning theory and …

Cognitive Load Theory Principles Applied To Simulation Instructional Design For Novice Health Professional Learners, Susan M. Grieve

Department of Physical Therapy Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

While the body of evidence supporting the use of simulation-based learning in the education of health professionals is growing, howor why simulation-based learning works is not yet understood. There is a clear need for evidence, grounded in contemporary educational theory, to clarify the features of simulation instructional design that optimize learning outcomes and efficiency in health care professional students.

Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) is a theoretical framework focused on a learner’s working memory capacity. One principle of CLT is example based learning. While this principle has been applied in both traditional classroom and laboratory settings, and has shown positive …

Public Attitudes About Private Forest Management And Government Involvement In The Southeastern United States, Melissa M. Kreye, Renata Rimsaite, Damian C. Adams Jan 2019

Public Attitudes About Private Forest Management And Government Involvement In The Southeastern United States, Melissa M. Kreye, Renata Rimsaite, Damian C. Adams

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications

In the southern United States the country’s top wood-producing region, factors such as intergenerational land transfer and population spillover from urban areas have resulted in forestland conversion and reduced production of critical ecosystem services associated with forest systems (e.g., timber, clean water supply, wildlife habitat). Public attitudes, which drive forestland policy prescriptions, may also be evolving due to the way people experience and perceive forests (e.g., recreation), and think about the role of government in private forest decisions. These changes have significant implications for forestland management and the forest-based economy, both locally and globally. We present the results of a …

This paper reports on the views of social care graduates in Ireland of how ready they are to join the workforce and how their educational programme has prepared them. Two semi-structured interviews were conducted with the same participants. The first was at the end of their final year in college and the second between 9 and 12 months later when they were in employment. Findings indicate that participants, while apprehensive, felt ready …

Collectivism In Central Appalachia: Educational And Career Implications, Heidi Leigh Creamer Jan 2019

Collectivism In Central Appalachia: Educational And Career Implications, Heidi Leigh Creamer

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Individualistic cultures tend to focus on freedom, individuality, and personal autonomy. Mainstream America is found to be a vertical individualistic society, but research has shown there are pockets of collectivistic cultures within the US. Collectivistic cultures, in contrast, tend to focus on family, conformity, and thinking of the group before one’s self. Collectivism arises due to a population’s need to rely on one another for resources. As such, low resource environments are subject to having collectivistic values. Research suggests that collectivism rates are higher in impoverished areas, such as Appalachia. This investigation focused on central Appalachia and the attributes that …

An Investigation Of Three Subjective Rating Scales Of Mental Workload In Third Level Education, Nha Vu Thanh Nguyen

Dissertations

Mental Workload assessment in educational settings is still recognized as an open research problem. Although its application is useful for instructional design, it is still unclear how it can be formally shaped and which factors compose it. This paper is aimed at investigating a set of features believed to shape the construct of mental workload and aggregating them together in models trained with supervised machine learning techniques. In detail, multiple linear regression and decision trees have been chosen for training models with features extracted respectively from the NASA Task Load Index and the Workload Profile, well-known self-reporting instruments for assessing …

School Principals' Perspectives On School Psychologists As Systems-Level Consultants, Brandon J. Wood Jan 2019

School Principals' Perspectives On School Psychologists As Systems-Level Consultants, Brandon J. Wood

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the existing discrepancy between school psychologist engagement in systems-level consultation and the ascribed importance of such practice is likely multifaceted. Barriers, such as time spent in assessment-related activities, a lack of training in consultation, and high student-to-school psychologist ratios, among others, are known to reduce the possibilities and opportunities for school psychologist participation in systems-level consultation (Cramer & Rosenfield, 2003; Curtis, March, Castillo, Stockslager, & Gelley, 2012). An underexplored potential barrier for school psychologist entry into systems-level activity is a school's principal. Most studies of Educational professionals' perceptions of school psychologists were conducted over a decade ago (e.g., Gilman …

High School Discipline Policies And The Teacher-Student Relationship, Sara Elizabeth Nardone Jan 2019

High School Discipline Policies And The Teacher-Student Relationship, Sara Elizabeth Nardone

ETD Archive

Relationships play a central role of human development by fostering connection and growth in individuals (Josselson, 1992). Adolescence is a stage of development in which relationships are perhaps most integral because they help youth navigate the changes that come with this developmental phase. Teacher-student relationships are one of the most influential relationships for youth because teacher-student relationships impact students’ academic achievement and educational experience (Ellerbrock et al., 2015; Wilkins, 2014). There are many factors that contribute to positive teacher-student relationships. An area of research that has not gained as much attention regarding teacher-student relationships is discipline in schools. High schools …

Building Resilience Through Strengths-Based Learning During Graduate Study Abroad: An Exploratory Study, Chelsea K. Dresen, Matthew L. Wilmes, Karen R. Sullivan, Theresa A. Waterbury

Leadership Education Capstones

Resilience has been identified as an essential skill for leaders (Basso, Gruendel, Key, MacBlaine, & Reynolds, 2015) and as crucial for navigating both school and life challenges (Yeager & Dweck, 2012). Research indicates that there are a variety of ways to build resilience, including in educational settings (Yeager & Dweck, 2012). Higher education institutions utilize pedagogical practices to maximize student learning and growth opportunities (Rennick, 2015). One pedagogical frame often employed is experiential education. College and university faculty have embedded experiential learning pedagogy in the curriculum to facilitate learning outside the classroom (Liang, Caton, & Hill, 2015; Jordan, Gagnon, Anderson, …

The Effects Of Work-Integrated Learning On Undergraduate Sports Coaching Students’ Perceived Self-Efficacy, Anthony Weldon, Jake K. Ngo

Faculty of Management & Hospitality (THEi)

This study examined the effects of a work-integrated learning (WIL) placement on student's self-efficacy and perceived workplace skill levels. Twenty-eight participants volunteered for this study, in which 15 completed WIL and 13 did not (non-WIL). The Work Self-Efficacy Inventory (WS-Ei) and Workplace Skills Questionnaire (WSQ) were used to collect student responses. Differences between groups were analyzed using a Mann-Whitney U test, mean differences were shown, and statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results from the WS-Ei indicated the WIL group shown significantly higher total WS-Ei scores, higher mean scores for all dimensions measured, and significantly higher scores for individual dimensions; problem-solving, politics, pressure and role expectations. The WSQ indicated the WIL group had higher mean scores for all perceived workplace skills, except for information technology, and no significant differences was observed between groups. Areas showing little difference between groups can be highlighted for further support and development.

Domestic violence (also named as domestic abuse, battering, or family violence) is a pattern of behaviourwhich involves violence or other abuse by one person against another in a domestic setting, such as inmarriage or cohabitation. Domestic violence against women can be categorized as physical, sexual, psychological or economical violence. It can be seen that women exposed to such types of violence develop physical or psychological problems, even in some cases the violence ends up with domestic homicide or suicide. Radical (Re)Naming Through A Tapestry Of Autoethographic Voices: Finding Healing Through Dis/Ability Theorizing, Kelly Vaughan, David I. Hernandez-Saca, Jamie Buffington-Adams, Mercedes Cannon, Sandra Vanderbilt, Ann G. Winfield

Education Faculty Publications

In this article, we engaged in a multi-layered collective autoethnography about disability, ableism, and identity within the context of schools and society by exploring the relationship between Curriculum Studies and Dis/ability Studies in Education. While excerpts of our individual narratives are embedded in the article, our final piece weaves together our individual reflections to illustrate that there is no single experience of dis/ability; however, there are themes about dis/ability and resistance to ableism that can be gleaned from hearing a multiplicity of voices within a context of intersectionality for radical individual, social and (inter)disciplinary transformation.
