Bridging Civic Engagement To Civic Responsibility Through Short-Term, International Service-Learning Experiences: A Qualitative Analysis Of Student Reflections, Stephanie Malinenko, Justine Tutuska, Lynn Matthews
eJournal of Public Affairs
Written reflection is a tool commonly used by faculty to assess student learning in service-learning courses, which are frequently offered as short-term international experiences. This article discusses a qualitative analysis of students’ written reflections on a short-term, international service-learning project that was conducted to determine whether undergraduate students bridged their engagement to the development of civic or social responsibility. Results of the analysis revealed that students demonstrated nominal progress toward civic responsibility when not specifically prompted by assignments. Multiple themes emerged from the analysis related to students’ goals, challenges, and lessons learned. Based on the findings, the authors recommend that …

The Impact Of Gap Years On Academic Outcomes For Women: A Case Study From The Missionary Age Change, Margaret Marchant
The Impact Of Gap Years On Academic Outcomes For Women: A Case Study From The Missionary Age Change, Margaret Marchant
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Young adults throughout the United States and other countries participate in “gap years,” or time away from school, often for travel, work, or volunteering. This practice is promoted as a way to mature and refocus. However, some worry that it lowers the likelihood of college completion. Previous literature has investigated the academic, social, and personal benefits of gap years with mixed results; however selection into gap years confounds the true impact with unobservable personal characteristics. To overcome selection issues, I exploit an exogenous policy change that lowered age requirements for missionary service, a unique type of gap year, resulting in …
An Evaluation Of The Efficacy Of Preschool Participation Upon Kindergarten Readiness, Simone Sellers
An Evaluation Of The Efficacy Of Preschool Participation Upon Kindergarten Readiness, Simone Sellers
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore whether children who attended a full day of preschool were better prepared for kindergarten than those who attended a part-time program or no program at all. Two levels of the independent variable, preschool participation, were utilized: (a) full-time participation and (b) part-time or no participation. Readiness rates among children who attended a public preschool in a large school district in Florida were examined using standardized academic achievement scores as dependent variables. When looking at kindergarten readiness, males who attended preschool scored higher academic levels than males who attended no preschool. However, …
Immigration And The Public-Private School Choice, Lidia Farre, Francesc Ortega, Ryuichi Tanaka
Immigration And The Public-Private School Choice, Lidia Farre, Francesc Ortega, Ryuichi Tanaka
Publications and Research
This paper empirically analyzes the effects of immigration on the schooling decisions of natives. We employ household-level data for Spain for years 2000-2015, a period characterized by high economic growth and large immigration that was halted by a long and severe recession. Our estimates reveal that increases in immigrant density at the school level triggered an important native flight from tuition-free, public schools toward private ones. We also find strong evidence of cream-skimming as more educated native households are the most likely to switch to private schools in response to immigration. Furthermore, we find that immigration leads to higher student-teacher …

In 1916, Ellen Quinlan Donnelly aka Nelly Don started a fashion empire from her humble Kansas City home. She became one of the wealthiest and most celebrated American women in business with a career that spanned well into the 1960s. The Nelly Don Empire reportedly sold more dresses in the 20th century than any other single person in the United States, and she started as a Lindenwood College student. This study investigated Nell Quinlan Donnelly the “Grand Lady” of the garment industry beyond her millionaire status and revolutionary business leadership at Donnelly Garment Company. The reexamination of Nell Quinlan Donnelly’s …

Student Social Services In Kentucky’S Schools: Understanding The Impact Of Fryscs On Student Achievement, Stephen W. Lin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
This study examines the impact of a public policy intervention, called Family Resource and Youth Service Centers (FRYSC), on student achievement in Kentucky. The author provides a quantitative evaluation of FRYSC, supplementing a void in prior research on FRYSC effectiveness. FRYSC-eligible schools (n = 1263) included in this study had no center, an elementary center, a middle or high school center, or a combined center. The researcher analyzed data obtained from government databases reporting school-level statewide assessment results. Student achievement metrics reflect reading and mathematics proficiency outcomes for at-risk students, whom are typically served by a FRYSC. For reading and …

Breastfeeding: An Evidence-Based Intervention For Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, Holly A. Myers
Dissertations
Opioid drug use during pregnancy is a national and local emergent concern. The state of Ohio has experienced a dramatic increase in neonates born with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). NAS occurs after the neonate is born and no longer receives a supply of opioids from the mother. NAS occurs in approximately 55 to 94 percent of neonates exposed to opioids in utero and if left untreated can become life threatening. Nationally, an estimated $1.5 billion is spent annually for NAS treatment equating to $53,400 per infant hospitalized. Non-pharmacological supportive care measures such as breastfeeding can aid in managing NAS symptoms. …
Microfinance And The Decision To Invest In Children’S Education, P.V. Viswanath
Microfinance And The Decision To Invest In Children’S Education, P.V. Viswanath
Faculty Working Papers and Articles
Although one of the primary objectives of microfinance has been the reduction of poverty through the provision of credit for income-generating purposes, evidence of its impact on poverty has been mixed. Even if there is no direct impact of microfinance, there may be an indirect positive impact through the effect of microcredit availability on families’ decisions to invest in their children’s education. In this paper, I describe a study undertaken to gauge the impact of microcredit availability on education expenditures for children of clients of a South Indian microfinance institution. I first look at some determinants of the demand for …

Osteoporosis is known as a pediatric disease with geriatric consequences. The need for bone health, awareness of controllable risk factors and prevention of osteoporosis begins during ones youth (Campbell, 2012; Cannada, 2016; Evenson & Sanders, 2016; Edmonds, Turner, & Usdan, 2012; Ford et al., 2011; Gammage et al., 2009; Gammage et al., 2012). Currently, most health information and health campaigns focus on older adults. To promote measurable improvements in reducing the number of cases of osteoporosis, the focus for change needs to start as early as teenage and young adult age. In addition to the general population trends, rates specifically …
The Right To Education: An Analysis Through The Lens Of The Deontological Method Of Immanuel Kant, Kavana Ramaswamy
The Right To Education: An Analysis Through The Lens Of The Deontological Method Of Immanuel Kant, Kavana Ramaswamy
Northwestern Journal of Human Rights
The framework of categorical imperatives is one of the most famous deontological theories of rights that have been formulated. The framework has often been used to justify human rights policies all over the world. While they have been subject to several criticisms over the last two centuries, some of these include improvements to the original framework. This paper analyses the framework of the categorical imperatives and suggest certain modifications to improve internal coherence.
The paper then seeks to apply this framework to the right to education, a right that is under fire in the conservatively-charged political arena today. This is …

In the United States, children between the ages of five and eighteen spend up to 85 percent of their time out of school. After the school day ends, working parents of school-age children and youth need to secure adequate after-school care. During after school hours, between the hours of 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., 19 percent of violent offenses committed by juveniles occur (U.S. Department of Justice, 2010). On the National Assessment of Educational Progress (2015) the average eighth-grade minority student performs at about the level of the average fourth-grade white student. These data indicate that the best use of …

Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Cleft lip and palate are craniofacial anomalies affecting more than 200,000 infants in teh United States per year. Although this condition is quite common, parents are often confused and uninformed when they discover their newborn has a cleft lip and/or palate. In time, parents can learn of the surgical repairs and therapies, but what about the management, treatment, effects on education, risk factors, genetics, and any other lasting effects on the newborn? Many parents often wonder if their baby can be fed properly, if the child will have trouble learning to talk, or how to tell relatives and friends about …
