Reverence For Life: An Ethic For High School Biology Curricula, George K. Russell
Reverence For Life: An Ethic For High School Biology Curricula, George K. Russell
Education Collection
Ethical and pedagogical arguments are presented against the use of animals by high school students in experiments causing pain/suffering/death of the animal. No justification is seen for such experimentation when perfectly valid alternatives, using noninvasive techniques, exist or could be developed. An important concern is the emotional and psychological growth of young people. An overall objective of high school biology curricula must be to assist students in making viable connections with living biological processes and the natural world.

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study is an exploratory case study which applies and refines Ralf Dahrendorf's theoretical work in an effort to understand the social organization of segregation academies. Enrollment figures are used in a state-wide analysis of the effect of potential black enrollment …
Learning From Animals: Models For Studying Physiology And Disease, W. Jean Dodds
Learning From Animals: Models For Studying Physiology And Disease, W. Jean Dodds
Education Collection
Animals can serve as valuable educational tools for elementary and high school students. By teaching young people reverence for all forms of life at an early age, it is possible to instill in them a proper perspective concerning the welfare and humane stewardship of animals. Exemplary subjects include the various aspects of evolutionary and embryological development; normal physiological processes, the mechanisms and pathology of naturally occurring infectious, metabolic, genetic and neoplastic diseases and aging; and an appreciation of the inevitability of death. Such studies can serve as learning models for students because these processes parallel or closely resemble those of …
Student (And Animal) Welfare, Leonard M. Krause
Student (And Animal) Welfare, Leonard M. Krause
Education Collection
Adolescents exhibit affection for numerous vertebrates and appear to sympathize and to identify with traumas these animals experience. Therapeutic benefits students attach to nurturing and breeding certain vertebrates are evident; destruction of these same creatures produces clearly negative attitudes by students toward the science course and the instructor. "Case histories" documented while teaching high school students working with vertebrates are reviewed and are related to specific techniques (e.g., pithing) utilized by numerous instructors. Motivation, increased attention span, sustained interest, involvement with community issues and other desirable educational goals are demonstrated to be resultants of student involvement with living vertebrates studied …

Home Interaction Program: Hip, Georgia Sackman
All Graduate Projects
A Home Interaction Program (HIP) was designed and implemented for Title I parents and students. The components of the program included monthly newsletters, libraries, and workshops. It was found that parents of Title I students participated in HIP activities as long as they could be done in the home. The conclusion was reached that if schools want Title I parents to become involved in their child's education learning experiences, programs must be developed to reach into the home.

Selected Variables Related To The Knowledge Of, Attitude Towards, And Utilization Of Bilingual Education Services By Spanish American Parents In Two Michigan Cities, Ricardo Garcia Rodriguez
Dissertations
Problem. There has been much controversy over bilingual education programs during the past decade. This has attracted the attention of the news media and local communities throughout the United States. However, parents' views, expectations, or attitudes toward bilingual-education services have not been adequately surveyed. Thus, the problem for this research was to identify which variables or combination of variables are significantly related to: (1) how knowledgeable the parents are regarding bilingual-education services; (2) what attitude they have toward these services; and (3) whether they utilize the bilingual-education services for their children. It was the purpose of this study to discover relationships …

A Content Analysis Of Public School Education News In An Independently Owned Small Daily Newspaper, Linda L. Mccleary
A Content Analysis Of Public School Education News In An Independently Owned Small Daily Newspaper, Linda L. Mccleary
All Master's Theses
Newspapers and school districts form a tentative partnership in the dissemination of education news. Subjects preferred by readers have not been reflected in actual education news coverage. Emphasis on utility information at the expense of in-depth writing about what is going on in public education has been standard practice. Content analysis shows that while quantity of education news seems reasonable, the quality of that news fails to transmit to readers the substance of what teachers and children are accomplishing in the public schools.

A Comparison Of Two Secondary Literature Units. Literary Duo A: Twain And Knowles Vs. Literary Duo B: Twain And Hentoff (Volumes I And Ii), Ellen Skinner Kester
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Purpose. This seven-week high school English literature study purported to compare the effects of two combinations of novels and their collateral curricular treatments. DUO A combined Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn with Knowles' A Separate Peace. DUO B combined the same Twain novel with Hentoff's I'm Really Dragged But Nothing Gets Me Down. A key question in the inquiry was which of the two modern works would increase the appeal and accessibility of the 19th century classic. Specifically, the study posed nine null hypotheses focusing on these areas: (1) knowledge of literary terms and figurative language; (2) literary analysis …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research study was conducted to determine whether children's attitudes are affected differently by listening to didactic literature than by listening to literature with subtle literary style. The five attitudes examined were generosity, greed, perseverance, quarreling, and respect for others. Forty-eight third-grade pupils from two classrooms were randomly assigned to three treatment groups. The three treatments were (1) a McGuffey Reader Treatment, in which subjects listened to selections from McGuffey readers which were written in a didactic literary style; (2) a Dr. Seuss Book Treatment, in which subjects listened to stories and books authored by Dr. Seuss which represented a …
