One Problem, Two Contexts, Danielle L. Gigger Jan 2007

One Problem, Two Contexts, Danielle L. Gigger

Theses and Dissertations

In this study, a group of students were presented with two mathematically isomorphic problems but in radically different contexts. Analysis of their thinking and reasoning as they worked to solve and explain each problem demonstrates that the thinking and reasoning that emerged in each problem responded to clear purposes that the problems elicited in these students. The first problem was posed in a context that relied on experience and intuition rather than a formal mathematical description. The second problem was posed in a formal, set-theoretic context. While the analysis offered here reveals similarities in the students' final reasoning in the …

Incorporating Art Into Education : The Importance Of Teaching Creatively In A Standards Based Classroom, Monica Petersen Jan 2007

Incorporating Art Into Education : The Importance Of Teaching Creatively In A Standards Based Classroom, Monica Petersen

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Art education is an important aspect of overall learning and schools are failing to provide adequate art education programs for students. Eighty-nine percent of Americans believe that art education is important enough to be taught in schools, and still, art education is being allowed to slip out the backdoor without anyone asking why (National Arts Education, 2007). If teachers could incorporate art into the current curriculum, students would benefit and art could be used as a valuable teaching tool. An art resource packet was created for teachers in response to the interviews conducted. The resource packet contains information on how …

Mothers And Non-Mothers: Gendering The Discourse Of Education In South Asia, Nita Kumar Jan 2007

Mothers And Non-Mothers: Gendering The Discourse Of Education In South Asia, Nita Kumar

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

This essay brings together and complicates three stories within South Asian education history by gendering them. Thus modern education was actively pursued by mothers for their sons; indigenous education should be understood as continuing at home; and women were crucial actors in men's reform and nationalism efforts through both collaboration and resistance. Gendered history should go beyond the separate story of girls and women, or the understanding of women as mothers and mothers as the nation, to see these three processes as gendered. The essay argues for the coming together of historical and anthropological arguments and for using literature imaginatively.

Personalization Efforts And The Relationship To School Climate In Select Michigan High Schools, Karl A. Pilar Jan 2007

Personalization Efforts And The Relationship To School Climate In Select Michigan High Schools, Karl A. Pilar

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The American high school is on the verge of a reform movement like that seen in American middle schools throughout the early and mid-1990s. In 1996 the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) released its recommendations for reform in the study Breaking Ranks: Changing an American Institution. Among these are recommendations that call for high schools to become smaller, less bureaucratic, and more responsive to student needs, where students feel a sense of belonging. Hoy and Miskel (2001) defined school climate as a “relatively enduring quality of the school’s environment that is experienced by participants, affects their behavior, is …

Enabling P2p Cooperative Wms Proxy Caching And Prefetching In An Educational Environment, Jeffrey A. Bergamini, Michael Haungs

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Given the great demand and promise for educational use of GIS, real time access to massive remote geospatial datasets for pedagogical purposes would be immensely useful to educators and students. However, such access has remained elusive. In other work, we have demonstrated that a P2P distributed system of client-side proxies can address the challenges posed by the interactive, multiplicative, and exploratory nature of classroom GIS, and we described this system at a high level. In this paper, we present the details of several novel techniques that enable P2P cooperative caching and prefetching of OGC WMS data in an educational lab …

Preservice Teachers' Confidence In Teaching Students With Disabilities: Addressing The Intasc Principles, Amelia Jenkins Ph.D., Cecily Ornelles Ph.D.

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

A survey was developed from the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium’s (INTASC) ten principles that specify what all general and special education teachers should know and be able to do to teach students with disabilities. Two groups of students, those in a general education only and a dual elementary/special education program, were surveyed. Teacher candidates in the general education program scored significantly lower across all variables as compared to those who were completing the dual preparation program. These results, similar to studies of general education teachers, indicate general education preservice teachers need more training concerning students with disabilities.

It Managers, Construction Marketers, And Emergency Medical Technicians: Professional Adult Learners In Higher Education, Michael J. Michaud

Doctoral Dissertations

In this study, I examine the literacy, school, and work experiences of three professional adult learners attending Northeast State College (NSC), a four-year public university in New England. I define professional adult learners as those over the age of twenty-five who enroll in formal programs of post-secondary study for reasons having to do primarily with career advancement and/or transition. More often than not, professional adult learners work full-time and pursue their studies part-time. This project grew out of my work teaching at NSC in the late 1990s. At that time, I had a limited sense of who professional adult learners …

During the year-long study, I collected data from sources, including: student interviews, classroom observations, students' writing samples, students' social influence maps, and community/school artifacts. Using a theoretical …

Instructor Efficacy And Student Consumerism, Bethany Burge Jan 2007

Instructor Efficacy And Student Consumerism, Bethany Burge

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Students who endorse the culture of student consumerism do not presume higher education to involve effort, challenge or negative evaluation, but rather expect to be given high grades for being tuition-payers and class attendees. I hypothesize that the interplay between students’ perceptions of teacher effectiveness and their individual pupil performance is influenced by student consumerism and reinforced to promote or dissuade student achievement. Depending on the degree to which the student endorses student consumerism, this interplay can also impact the actual grades the students earn.

Reducing The Effects Of Bullying Among Aboriginal Children Living In Rural Western Australia: Annual Report, Child Health Promotion Research Unit, Edith Cowan University

Research outputs pre 2011

It is unknown how Aboriginal children and adults conceptualize childhood bullying and what school/community intervention programs are appropriate. The Solid Kids, Solid Schools project will use a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods to develop culturally informed and determined understandings of bullying among Aboriginal children. These understandings can then be used to formatively develop a sustainable school and community-based bullying prevention and reduction program with strategies identified by Aboriginal people for use in schools in the Yamaji region or Midwest, Murchison Education District of Western Australia.

According to the funding proposal a Steering Committee was established to provide project …
