A Qualitative Life Course Study: Significant Life Events In The Lives Of Appalachian First-Generation College Graduates, Peggy Henderson Murphy

ASA Annual Conference

Traditionally, the Appalachian region has struggled with poverty and isolation. Although in recent decades many of the outer Appalachian counties have stabilized economically the central region of Appalachia that includes West Virginia, southeastern Ohio and Eastern Kentucky continues to have the highest concentration of distressed and at-risk counties in the country. One of the most effective ways of combating poverty and isolation is through education, yet, educational opportunities for Appalachian youth have been limited. This study used a qualitative approach; six Appalachian youths who had either recently graduated from university or who were in their junior or senior year of …

What Leadership Development Institutes Can Never Teach College Presidents About Leadership, Livingston Alexander Mar 2014

What Leadership Development Institutes Can Never Teach College Presidents About Leadership, Livingston Alexander

International Journal of Leadership and Change

While most new presidents of colleges and universities advance to the presidency through a traditional academic pathway, an increasing number of new presidents are now coming from positions outside of higher education. Yet, regardless of how they come to the position, many new presidents are unprepared for the complex challenges they will encounter when they take on their new assignments. A large number assume that participation in professional development seminars, often promoted as institutes for new presidents, will provide the essential algorithm for a successful presidency. Operating on such an assumption may well turn out to be a fatal mistake. …

Today’s students exist in a visual world. A new semiotic language has emerged in the digital age. It consists of an ever-evolving vocabulary of signs and symbols that one can rapidly decipher. Icons represent applications and functions on a plethora of modern devices. Sounds indicate changes and the start and end of activity. The exposure of new audio and visual media are part of everyday communication, now more than ever. The Arts teach our students to better perceive these cues and the information that they deliver.

Media Portrayal Of Individuals In The Lower Class And Its Effects On Attributions Of Educational Hardships, Krista A. Burke Mar 2014

Media Portrayal Of Individuals In The Lower Class And Its Effects On Attributions Of Educational Hardships, Krista A. Burke

Communication Studies

This study investigated how media portrayals of individuals in the lower class affect people’s beliefs about educational hardships in lower socioeconomic areas. Specifically, this study looked at the attributions of these hardships to determine if media consumption had an effect on the internality of attributions. It was hypothesized that increased media consumption would be related to an increased tendency toward internal attributions. It was hypothesized that increased media consumption would lead to lower support for policy changes regarding education. A survey was distributed to assess media consumption habits and attitudes toward educational hardships in the lower class. Correlation results yielded …

Using Assessment Tasks To Develop A Greater Sense Of Values Literacy In Pre-Service Teachers, Beverly J. Christian Feb 2014

Using Assessment Tasks To Develop A Greater Sense Of Values Literacy In Pre-Service Teachers, Beverly J. Christian

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Although much emphasis is given to teaching values in schools, there appears to be less evidence that teacher education courses are explicitly preparing pre-service teachers for this responsibility. In this study, the Values for Australian Schools were integrated into two assessment tasks in the second year of a Bachelor of Education (Primary) Degree. Pre-service teachers interacted with the concept of values literacy through reflective readings and planning a unit of work. Results of the pre- and post-surveys and assessment tasks indicated that the pre-service teachers became more values-literate through engaging in the assessment tasks. Results also revealed a shift in …

Social media has become a staple of everyday life among over one billion people worldwide. A social networking presence has become a hallmark of vibrant and transparent communications. It has quickly become the preferred method of communication and information sharing. It offers the ability for various entities, especially residency programs, to create an attractive internet presence and "brand" the program. Social media, while having significant potential for communication and knowledge transfer, carries with it legal, ethical, personal, and professional risks. Implementation of a social networking presence must be deliberate, transparent, and optimize potential benefits while minimizing risks. This is especially …

The Modern School In The Garbage Settlement: Different Social Imaginaries Of The Future Of The Zabbaleen Recycling School For Boys, Marwa Adel Abed El Fattah

Theses and Dissertations

At 9 am, when 11-year old Ezz starts his day at the Mukattam Recycling School, he is already quite exhausted. Like most Zabballeen or juvenile garbage-collectors, he was up until well into the night the day before, gathering trash with his father in the more affluent neighborhoods of Cairo. In its communication material, the NGO-based school he attends in the morning promises to turn Ezz and others like him into “waste-management entrepreneurs". Fueled by this goal along with illiteracy and basic mathematics classes, Ezz is expected to hand in a monthly quota of used shampoo bottles and miscellaneous beauty product …

Renewal And Disposability: Projects And Narratives Of Development And Dispossession In The "New" New Orleans, Allison Padilla-Goodman

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

When much of the physical landscape of New Orleans was destroyed with Hurricane Katrina, expedited change and a need to redefine the city's future rushed in. The "new" New Orleans would be decisively different: it would be change-oriented, optimistic, and a leader in progressive reform movements. Discourse around post-Katrina New Orleans was focused on making New Orleans "better than before" and becoming a national leader for cutting-edge urban renewal. On-the-ground change mirrored this discourse, as the city's institutional landscape was dismantled and reconfigured along lines of privatization and newness as the trend of "accumulation by dispossession" (Harvey, 2005) blanketed the …

Participatory Learning And Popular Education Strategies For Water Education, Bruce Missingham

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

This paper presents some experiences of bringing critical pedagogy and participatory learning approaches into postgraduate university classrooms in teaching about water and sustainable development. Employing critical pedagogy and participatory approaches offer ways of escaping conventional lecture and tutorial approaches to pedagogy in university, strategies for incorporating and sharing student knowledge and experience, engaging students in the production of theory and knowledge (and not just their consumption), and problem-posing approaches that encourage critical thinking and creativity. First I discuss the need to break away from conventional university teaching approaches and the usefulness of critical pedagogy and participatory perspectives that seek education …

The N-Word: Lessons Taught And Lessons Learned, Neal A. Lester Jan 2014

The N-Word: Lessons Taught And Lessons Learned, Neal A. Lester

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

In the fall of 2008, I dared to teach a fifteen-week course that focused on a single word, a word arguably like no other, a word adorned with these emotionally colorful descriptors: “the most explosive of racial epithets,” “our cruelest word,” “the most toxic in the English language,” “the most troubling word in our language,” “almost magical in its negative power,” “six simple letters that convey centuries of pain, evil and contempt,” “an almost universally known word of contempt,” “occupies a place in the soul where logic and reason never go,” and “the filthiest, dirtiest, nastiest word in the English …

Rehabilitation Of The Upper Extremity After Stroke: Current Practice As A Guide For Curriculum, Mylene Schriner, Janell Thome, Monica Carrier Jan 2014

Rehabilitation Of The Upper Extremity After Stroke: Current Practice As A Guide For Curriculum, Mylene Schriner, Janell Thome, Monica Carrier

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Stroke is the leading cause of disability in the United States and a top diagnosis for occupational therapy (OT) services among neurological conditions. Academic programs teach OT students neurological frames of reference (FORs) to provide a foundation for future practice. To meet accreditation standards, entry-level curricula must reflect current practice and evidence-based interventions. A survey of OT practitioners working in upper extremity stroke rehabilitation was conducted to investigate current clinical practice in a variety of treatment settings. Survey questions probed the use of motor rehabilitation techniques exclusive to one of six neurological FORs: Brunnstrom, Constraint-induced Movement Therapy, Neurodevelopmental Treatment, Proprioceptive …

Policy Without Purpose: The Misalignment Of Policymakers' And Students' Perceptions Of The Goals Of Education, Carly Shannon Evans Jan 2014

Policy Without Purpose: The Misalignment Of Policymakers' And Students' Perceptions Of The Goals Of Education, Carly Shannon Evans

ETD Archive

This dissertation focused on understanding high school students' perception of the goals of education as they relate to those of policymakers, as these perceptions have largely been absent in the dialogue of education reform and policy. These goals may compete with each other, as do broader educational goals, reflecting different societal views of the purpose of education. Understanding students' perception of the goals of education (as framed by the goals of policymakers) may provide greater insight into current policy, and serve as a compass in directing future reforms that is inclusive of all stakeholders involved in this complex system. Using …
