The Use Of Twitter In The Creation Of Educational Professional Learning Opportunities, Carrie R. Ross, Robert M. Maninger, Kimberly N. Laprairie, Sam Sullivan

Administrative Issues Journal

This study sought to examine how educators are using Twitter to increase their professional learning opportunities beyond the boundaries of traditional professional development offers, and whether educators feel a greater sense of fulfillment receiving professional development through networking and community learning than they do through traditional means of learning. A population of 160 educators—105 females and 55 males between the ages of 22 and 65—were surveyed using education related hashtags on Twitter. Thirty-two educators from the survey population elected to participate in an interview. The study discovered that educators are frequently using Twitter professionally to collaborate, network, and engage in …

Performing Radical Black Womanhood: Black Women Artists As Critical Public Pedagogues, Nicole April Carter

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This project draws from research on critical public pedagogy to explore the pedagogical experiences of Black women artists and performers from Detroit, Michigan, using qualitative methodological components from autoethnography, ethnography, phenomenology, and art-based inquiry. The researcher used criterion sampling in order to select six of the women who were part of this project. The researcher attempts to explore how Black women counter stereotypical representations of Black womanhood, the role that art and performance play in maintaining or countering those representations, as well as how artistic endeavors transform the social, cultural, and political experiences of Black women. The findings demonstrate that …

Common Core: Good Or Bad?, Ed Starkenburg Apr 2015

Common Core: Good Or Bad?, Ed Starkenburg

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

"What comes to your mind when someone mentions the Common Core (or otherwise known as the Common Core State Standards)? Do you appreciate them? Are you scared of them? Suspicious? The Common Core is an aspect of education that typically gets a strong response today when the topic enters conversations. As an educator, I find that many people respond negatively based on what they have heard about the standards from others rather than based on facts. However, because these standards have a political nature, it’s often hard to determine what the facts and truth are regarding this set of curriculum …

Core Intended Learning Outcomes For Tackling Health Inequalities In Undergraduate Medicine., Ae Williamson, R Ayres, J Allen, U Macleod

Peninsula Medical School

BACKGROUND: Despite there being a concerted effort in recent years to influence what doctors can do to tackle health inequalities in the UK, there has been limited policy focus on what undergraduate students need to learn at medical school in preparation for this. This project led by members of the Health Inequalities Group of the Royal College of General Practitioners in collaboration with the Institute of Health Equity, University College London sought to fill this gap. DISCUSSION: We conducted a Delphi poll using our teaching and stakeholder networks. We identified 5 areas for learning focusing on key knowledge and skills. …

Clinical Challenges In Isolation Care, Elizabeth L. Beam, Shawn G. Gibbs, Angela L. Hewlett, Peter C. Iwen, Suzanne L. Nuss, Philip W. Smith

Journal Articles: College of Nursing

OVERVIEW: In 2014, the authors published the results of a study investigating nurses' use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in the care of a live simulated patient requiring contact and airborne precautions. The 24 participants were video-recorded as they donned and doffed PPE. Variations in practices that had the potential to cause contamination were noted. In this article, the authors comment on those variations, analyzing each element of proper PPE protocols and examining why the behaviors are a safety concern for the nurse and a potential risk for disease transmission in the hospital or other clinical area. The authors note …

An Extensible Technology Framework For Cyber Security Education, Frank Jordan Sheen Apr 2015

An Extensible Technology Framework For Cyber Security Education, Frank Jordan Sheen

Theses and Dissertations

Cyber security education has evolved over the last decade to include new methods of teaching and technology to prepare students. Instructors in this field of study often deal with a subject matter that has rigid principles, but changing ways of applying those principles. This makes maintaining courses difficult. This case study explored the kind of teaching methods, technology, and means used to explain these concepts. This study shows that generally, cyber security courses require more time to keep up to date. It also evaluates one effort, the NxSecLab, on how it attempted to relieve the administrative issues in teaching these …

The Disabled Teacher: A Memoir Of An Interrupted Pedagogical Career, A Life With A Chronic Illness, And An Encounter With Real Barriers To Inclusive Education, Dorothy M. Bossman Apr 2015

The Disabled Teacher: A Memoir Of An Interrupted Pedagogical Career, A Life With A Chronic Illness, And An Encounter With Real Barriers To Inclusive Education, Dorothy M. Bossman

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

This dissertation is a narrative exploration of multiple themes relevant to education research: the relationship between the university and school, epistemology, teacher identity, disability studies, researcher subjectivity, and the retention of quality educators. This work of “autoethnography” (Ellis, Bochner, & Adams, 2011) approaches these topics through the tellings of a teaching career, the awakening of an education scholar, and the development of a chronic illness. While the focus of this inquiry often returns to the researcher’s pedagogical identity, the three storylines interact in myriad ways that relate to the larger field. Removal of one of these narrative threads would, metaphorically, …

Peace Building Through Education Reforms Case Study: Objectives And Philosophy Of Jordanian Educational System, Megan Mckeown Apr 2015

Peace Building Through Education Reforms Case Study: Objectives And Philosophy Of Jordanian Educational System, Megan Mckeown

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In the field of peacebuilding, education reform is the most tangible way to propel forward and build positive change. Access to schooling is not the only factor that will eradicate structural violence and inequality in our world. This can be seen with violence and inequality increasing even though educational enrollment has reached upwards of 90% in developing areas. We must begin a movement to learn from educational systems already in place, to pinpoint their strengths and expand on them, discover possible themes to change, and suggest diverse avenues to overcome obstacles for achieving social justice and peace. The ensuing research …

Culturally Relevant Pedagogy In Public Education, Mariela Flores Apr 2015

Culturally Relevant Pedagogy In Public Education, Mariela Flores

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Current and projected demographics, as well as data reflecting high school completion rates across ethnic groups in the U.S. demand a reexamination of pedagogical approaches in public schools. Despite substantial research demonstrating the success that Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (CRP) has with students of color, it remains a widely underutilized approach. This paper investigates factors inhibiting the use of CRP with Latino students. The researcher interviewed two English teachers at an East Salinas high school with a 98% Latino student body. Teachers were asked how they feel about CRP, what are factors inhibiting its implementation and what could be done to …

Lighting The Fuse: Building Regional Identity Through Public Library Services In Rural Central Appalachia, Laura C. Mcpherson Mar 2015

Lighting The Fuse: Building Regional Identity Through Public Library Services In Rural Central Appalachia, Laura C. Mcpherson

ASA Annual Conference

This presentation will relate survey and interview data that explore the perceptions and beliefs of librarians concerning the role of public libraries in fostering regional identity with a focus on libraries in rural Central Appalachia. As public libraries across the nation work to strengthen their connections to the communities they serve, the role of the library is being refined and redefined in relation to local needs and interests. During the past decade, the archival branch of librarianship has come to terms with the notion that by denying the inherently subjective nature of core archival duties such as acquisition, description, and …

Changing Our Tune: A Music-Based Approach To Teaching, Learning, And Resolving Conflict, Linda Marie Ippolito Mar 2015

Changing Our Tune: A Music-Based Approach To Teaching, Learning, And Resolving Conflict, Linda Marie Ippolito

PhD Dissertations

The need for change within the legal profession and legal education is critical. To remain relevant and responsive to twenty-first century challenges and complexities the next generation of professionals must be creative, imaginative, and innovative thinkers. Emotional and social intelligence, the ability to collaboratively problem-solve, negotiate, and mediate complex conflict are essential skills needed for success particularly in increasingly settlement-oriented environments. Studies and reports have noted, however, that practitioners are lacking these key skills. How can these new perspectives and essential skills be taught and developed? This mixed methods research study involved five professional musicians and thirty-eight first year law …

Interpretations Of Educational Experiences Of Women In Chitral, Pakistan, Rakshinda Shah Mar 2015

Interpretations Of Educational Experiences Of Women In Chitral, Pakistan, Rakshinda Shah

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This feminist oral history project records, interprets, and analyzes the educational experiences of seven Ismaili college women in Chitral, Pakistan. Chitral is a part of the world where educating girls and women is not a priority. Yet in the scarce literature available one can observe an increase in the literacy rates, especially amongst the Ismaili Muslims in the North of Chitral District. This thesis introduces students' accounts of their personal educational journeys. I argue that the students' accounts exemplify third space feminism. They negotiate contradictions and social invisibility in their daily lives in quiet activism that shadows but changes the …

Cyberbullying Prevention: Intervention Effects On Student Involvement, Sarah Nash Bumpas Mar 2015

Cyberbullying Prevention: Intervention Effects On Student Involvement, Sarah Nash Bumpas

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

Repeated studies show that cyberbullying is pervasive amongst adolescents. Cyberbullying can lead to self-harm, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Educators are called to intervene in educating students about cyberbullying through research and federal legislation. However, there is little research examining whether this education is taking place or having an effect.

This study investigates the relationship between the incidences of cyberbullying victimization and offending over time and the direct cyberbullying instruction and activities facilitated by classroom teachers. The study took place amongst sixth graders in Jefferson County Public Schools, a large urban school district located in northern Kentucky. Students in one school …

Reflections On The Eureca Conference And Creatopia Day, Anastasia Salter Mar 2015

Reflections On The Eureca Conference And Creatopia Day, Anastasia Salter

Faculty Journal Articles

I’ve recently returned home from my fantastic visit to the American University in Cairo, and I got off the plane to find an email waiting from a recent AUC graduate. This graduate noted that he’d been particularly caught by the idea of merging a passion in games with a career, and he wanted to ask if I had any advice for how to get started. This is one of my favorite questions to answer: it’s been an unexpected journey from growing up playing video games (often to all hours of the night, and without much regard for my actual homework) …

An Investigation Of The Impact Of A Flipped Classroom Instructional Approach On High School Students' Content Knowledge And Attitudes Toward The Learning Environment, Matthew R. Bell Mar 2015

An Investigation Of The Impact Of A Flipped Classroom Instructional Approach On High School Students' Content Knowledge And Attitudes Toward The Learning Environment, Matthew R. Bell

Theses and Dissertations

The idea of the “flipped classroom” is a relatively new concept in education that has become increasingly popular. Instructors who flip their classrooms reverse the roles of school work and homework by recording video lectures for students to watch before coming to class. Students then work on their homework in the classroom while the instructor is present to help them. Very little research has been done on the effectiveness of the flipped classroom to determine if students can perform better on exams by learning in a flipped classroom environment, especially for high school demographics. The purpose of this research is …

School Librarian Candidates’ Diversity Dispositions: Examining The Impact Of Cultural Proficiency Instruction, Bridget I. Kratt Mar 2015

School Librarian Candidates’ Diversity Dispositions: Examining The Impact Of Cultural Proficiency Instruction, Bridget I. Kratt

Student Work

The purpose of this study was to examine cultural proficiency instruction and its impact on the dispositions of the school librarian candidates in the Library Education Program at a Midwestern University. As research indicates that school librarians face the unique challenge of differentiating instruction to meet the educational needs for all students in the school, no matter their culture or ability (Mestre, 2009), it was also the intent of this study to explore which diversity disposition factors were impacted the greatest by that cultural proficiency instruction. Prior to cultural proficiency instruction, candidates completed the Diversity Dispositions Index (DDI) pre-survey, a …

Social Mobility And Education: The Case Of Egypt. International Journal Of Social Sciences And Education Research, 1(1), Pp.49-49., Maha Elhini, Tarek A. Moursi Mar 2015

Social Mobility And Education: The Case Of Egypt. International Journal Of Social Sciences And Education Research, 1(1), Pp.49-49., Maha Elhini, Tarek A. Moursi

Economics

The proposed paper gauges the extent of social mobility in Egypt via measuring intergenerational educational achievements of youth aged 13 to 25 using cross-section household data from Egypt Labour Market Panel Survey 2012. According to the sample, youth account for approximately 22per cent of the population, roughly 13 million individuals. We assume the schooling-gap is a good proxy for individuals’ future prospects across social classes, thus rendering educational achievement a measure of social mobility. The schooling-gap is used to compute a social mobility index (SMI) for all Egypt and selected sub-regions across alternative age groups and gender. Regression analysis is …
