Archives, Museum Objects And Digital Humanities: Supplementing Exhibits With Aural Object Contexts, Jennifer Ware

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This hybrid work uses examples of audio history profiles from an undergraduate introductory radio and TV news course to illustrate how audio storytelling can supplement museum exhibits to provide the functional context of items in an archived collection. Broadcast journalism students in the course researched, designed, recorded, and produced audio histories of museum objects from the 1920s "Stanley's General Store" archive exhibit at the Michigan State University Museum. The final audio files can be attached to the objects and displayed through a digital interface, which museumgoers access with their smartphones.

The project enables students to blend their traditional research and …

Centering Education In The Next Great Copyright Act: A Response To Professor Jaszi, Deidre Keller

Journal Publications

Rather, as the Georgia State decisions exemplify, educators and educational institutions are treated like every other unlicensed user of copyrighted materials; they are expected to prove that each use is a fair use firmly within the confines of existing fair use jurisprudence. Jaszi further asserts that endeavoring to change the copy-right statute is a lost cause and offers, as the least bad alternative, the possibility of educators articulating their uses as transformative and, therefore, well within the recognized parameters of the fair use doctrine. This piece responds to Professor Jaszi’s article. Part II briefly analyzes the Georgia State decisions out …

Best Practices In Museum Education, William W. Fleming Jr.

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Museums are visited more often than ever before, and as a result, are offering far more educational and interactive experiences to draw in a greater audience. As such, it is important to define how learning takes place in the museum setting, and also, how the museum experience can be refined in order to better accommodate visitor learning and their experience. The problem is, however, the museum setting is a nontraditional and unstructured environment, far different than the classroom, and museum staff, usually reserved to maintaining the collection and nothing else, are now being forced to build the museum experience around …

More specifically, elements of posthumanism will be used to better understand today’s teachers, to provide several overarching educational goals and curricular imperatives, and to inform pedagogical practice. Several posthumanist themes in particular will serve to unify this rather broad consideration of education at varying levels. One such theme is that of blurring boundaries, calling into question distinctions that have been the source of declines in the health of our bodies, our species, and the life systems of which we are constitutive parts. Distinctions too often lead to …
