Camp Organisation : A Guide To Youth Education Officers And Teachers On Camp Organisation, Youth Education Branch Education Department Of Western Australia

Research outputs pre 2011

The value of outdoor experiences for school students, through the use of the outdoors as an educational laboratory has long been recognised as a means of integrating and extending curricula.

The rapid urbanisation of society is depriving children and youth of many learning opportunities which would extend their total educational experience.

As educators, therefore, we have the responsibility to develop in our students, awareness and concern for the proper use and enjoyment of our natural resources.

Outdoor education, as an integral part of the school curriculum satisfies the fundamental need to experience and understand the forces of nature in a …

A Survey Of Reinforcement Preferences: Research Bulletin Number 3, L. J. Thompson Jan 1978

A Survey Of Reinforcement Preferences: Research Bulletin Number 3, L. J. Thompson

Research outputs pre 2011

Anyone who visits the primary school classroom in 1977 will observe that many teachers are implementing planned programmes of reinforcement. Behaviour modification programmes, contingency contracting, 'token-economies 1 are increasingly becoming features of a normal classroom programme. However, one would also observe that although more primary teachers are implementing planned programmes of reinforcement, the actual reinforcers being used are much the same as they always have been. Ticks, stamps, stars, prevalent in most classroom programmes of reinforcement today have been used as reinforcers from almost the very first days of formalized classroom teaching, Teachers continue to rely heavily on; written and …

Cohesion And Purpose : A Consideration Of The Structure Of Pre-Service Teacher Education, Douglas C. Courts Jan 1978

Cohesion And Purpose : A Consideration Of The Structure Of Pre-Service Teacher Education, Douglas C. Courts

Research outputs pre 2011

Any consideration of the structure of pre-service teacher education must take account of the long-standing and still-continuing debate on the relative merits of consecutive and concurrent patterns of training. The co-existence of both approaches - the universities with degree courses followed by one-year professional training and the majority of colleges of advanced education with concurrent course structures - shows that not only are both systems viable but that neither can claim significant superiority. It is often argued that the concurrent pattern is more suited to the training of primary school teachers while the consecutive pattern, particularly in the university context, …

A Comparative Study Of The Effects Of Two Approaches To Teaching Reading Comprehension On Achievement Of Fourth And Fifth Grade Students Of Middle And Low Socioeconomic Status, Alfred John Gordon Jan 1978

A Comparative Study Of The Effects Of Two Approaches To Teaching Reading Comprehension On Achievement Of Fourth And Fifth Grade Students Of Middle And Low Socioeconomic Status, Alfred John Gordon

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Problem: The problem was divided into two parts. The first part investigated the question whether students who were taught reading comprehension skills by the PIRAMID objective-based approach showed a greater gain than students who were taught the same skills by use of the basal reader approach. The second part was to ascertain the degree of concordance between results of the criterion-referenced test (CRT) and results of the norm-referenced test (NRT).

Purpose: The purpose was twofold: (1) to compare gains in reading comprehension achievement of an experimental group with gains of a control group, and (2) to compare the pretest and …

The Development Of A Nongraded Mathematics Program For The Intermediate Grades In An Open Concept Middle School, Timothy D. Paschal

All Graduate Projects

During the spring of 1972 the teaching staff of Fairview Middle School, Central Kitsap School District, was engaged in re-examining its methods of instruction. The opportunity existed to facilitate this re-examination through applied administrative techniques. Beginning in the Spring of 1972, and continuing through the Spring of 1974, the teaching staff, with the aid of this writer, worked to reorganize and improve its methods of instruction

The purpose of the project was to apply those administrative techniques which would foster and sustain a motivational level, within the teaching staff, sufficient to reorganize and improve their methods of instruction. The thrust …

A Comparison Of Music Programs In California Unified School Districts With And Without Music Leadership, Thomas David Hopkins

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

There was a need to determine if there was any evidence that people in official music leadership positions in school districts had performed a service which had demonstrated effects on various elements of the music program.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not school districts WITH music leaders, as compared to those districts WITHOUT music leaders, have more (1) music students, (2) music classes and performance group opportunities, (3) music staff and development opportunities, (4) adequate financial support and adequate inventories for music, and (5) goal orientation in music. Also, the study was to determine if …

The Influence Of The Reliability Of The Dependent Variable On Statistical Power, Theresa M. Housden Jan 1977

The Influence Of The Reliability Of The Dependent Variable On Statistical Power, Theresa M. Housden

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

PROBLEM: In the planning phase of developing quality educational research there are several critical decision points. Some of these decisions are made to en sure that the research will have adequate statistical power, that is, the capability to detect meaningful differences, if they do exist. In an unpublished article, K. D. Hopkins from the Laboratory of Educational Research, University of Colorado and B. R. Hopkins from the University of the Pacific commented that all theoretical and empirical options for increasing statistical power had been investigated except for the reliability of the dependent variable. In this article, they derived a method …

Language Problems And Aboriginal Education, Ed Brumby (Ed.) Jan 1977

Language Problems And Aboriginal Education, Ed Brumby (Ed.)

Research outputs pre 2011

Effective communication must be an essential feature of any teaching/ .learning situation and it follows that considerable difficulties arise when teacher and learner speak different and mutually unintelligible languages or dialects. This, unfortunately, is the situation in which many, if not most, Aboriginal children and their teachers throughout Australia find themselves. This classroom situation reflects, of course, the difficulties and frustrations experienced on a wider scale by many Aboriginal parents and Aboriginal communities, and those outsiders who work with them. The problem is compounded further by the fact that few teachers or others who work in Aboriginal areas are given …

Causes Of Low Enrollment Of Black Students In Upper-Level Science Courses, Henry L. Jenkins Jan 1977

Causes Of Low Enrollment Of Black Students In Upper-Level Science Courses, Henry L. Jenkins

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

For approximately seven years, the number of Black students enrolled in upper-level science courses (e.g., Chemistry, Human Physiology, Physics) is proportionately lower than the number of non-Black students a.t Palatka South High School, Palatka, Florida.

On the surface, this low enrollment appears to coincide with the fact that there are more non-Black students than Black students enrolled in the school. However, if one were to examine closely the total number of Black students enrolled in upperlevel science courses from the school's total Black student population enrolled in science classes, and compare it to the school's total non-Black population enrolled in …
