Measuring The Effects Of Guided Reading On Nesa-R Student Cohort Scale Scores, Todd E. Tripple

Student Work

The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the effects of new district Guided Reading protocols on elementary students’ reading proficiency as measured by the Nebraska State Accountability-Reading (NeSA-R) student cohort scores from 2013 to 2014. The implementation of the new Guided Reading protocols in the research district provided clear guidance on the instruction of Guided Reading. The protocols were based on the research and recommendations of Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell, “Fountas & Pinnell.” Prior to the implementation of the new Guided Reading protocols, Guided Reading was a suggested, but not a required, instructional practice in the …

Influence Of Collaborative Learning On Women’S Experiences Of Engineering Education, Shannon Chance, Brian Bowe Jan 2015

Influence Of Collaborative Learning On Women’S Experiences Of Engineering Education, Shannon Chance, Brian Bowe

Other resources

In a study of 55 electrical engineering students, Yadav, et al., found learning gains among students in Project-Based Learning (PBL) to be twice the gains of those taking traditional lecture courses. Du and Kolmos indicate groupbased PBL is more supportive and appealing to women than traditional lecture formats. Savin-Baden posits that female and minority students are more likely to ask questions in non-competitive PBL environments. This study interrogates the claim that PBL is particularly supportive to female and minority students. This work-in-progress uses a phenomenological research methodology to investigate how collaborative learning (in formal as well as non-formal settings) influences …

Classroom Motivational Climate In Online And Face-To-Face Undergraduate Courses: The Interplay Of Gender And Course Format, Yan Yang, Yoon-Jung Cho, Angela Watson

College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship

In this study, the role of gender and course format in college students’ perceptions of classroom motivational climate (i.e., sense of classroom community and perceived classroom goal structure) was examined. Participants were 722 college students from a variety of majors at a comprehensive Midwest American university. Female students felt a stronger sense of community and perceived lower levels of performance-approach goal structure in online classes than their male counterparts experienced. Male students perceived the face-to-face classes as being more communal and less performance-approach oriented than the females did. Further, both male and female students perceived a stronger mastery-approach classroom goal …

Assessing Students’ Volition And Performance Through Integrated Metacognitive Instruction, Rey G. Tantiado, Ricardo T. Bagarinao Jan 2015

Assessing Students’ Volition And Performance Through Integrated Metacognitive Instruction, Rey G. Tantiado, Ricardo T. Bagarinao

CNU Journal of Higher Education

Each student has a unique way of learning things. But whether or not it is influenced by a teaching strategy is something that needs to be determined. The study analyzed if teaching methods could affect students’ volition and choice of a learning strategy. Using the adaptation concept as a framework, the study designed a quasi-experiment that involved two intact classes of 36 freshmen students taught with integrated metacognitive instruction (IMI) and traditional lecture method (TLM). A prior consent was sought from these students and the university at which the study was conducted. The students were enrolled in a general biology …

Academic Rigor: A Research Report, Gabriel Reich, Volkan Sevim, Amanda Turner Jan 2015

Academic Rigor: A Research Report, Gabriel Reich, Volkan Sevim, Amanda Turner

MERC Publications

Rigor can be defined in any number of ways. We found an imbalance between the ways in which rigor has been defined by the Virginia Department of Education, and how education scholars define rigor in the respective academic disciplines.

(1) The Commonwealth of Virginia defines rigor as college and career readiness as measured by attendance in post-secondary educational institution, achievement of high Standards of Learning (SOL) test scores, as well as participation in Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs.

(2) Educational Psychologists tend to define rigor in ways that are generalizable across contexts. Researchers in this tradition focus on academic …

Parental involvement and a collaborative effort between the school and family have consistently yielded positive benefits for childrens academic learning and success. Given the diversified landscape of Americas schools, the significance of the parent perspective in making change within the school to further Latino studentEducational achievement is paramount. Impact Of Problem-Based Learning On Engineering Student Curiosity Development, Shannon M. Sipes Jan 2015

Impact Of Problem-Based Learning On Engineering Student Curiosity Development, Shannon M. Sipes

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Curiosity is a necessary component to intellectual growth (Engel, 2009) and fundamental to learning (Schmitt & Lahroodi, 2008), but it is unclear how to purposefully grow an individuals curiosity (Smith, 2011). Therefore, the purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationship between problem-based learning and curiosity in engineeringEducation. Results from a series of regression analyses did not support a predictive relationship between problem-based learning and curiosity. Further data analysis suggest problem-based learning environment should be a categorical rather than continuous variable.

The Role Of School Counselors And Guidance Programs As Perceived By School Leadership: A Quantitative Study Focusing On The Actual And Preferred Activities Performed By School Counselors From A Principal's Perspective, Deborah Lynn Brown

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) developed a comprehensive framework that clearly defines the school counselor role and functions. Indianas Gold Star Initiative aligns with the ASCA national model for best practices in school counseling. Counselor Education programs train and educate counselors to function within the national and state standards. However, this alignment in defining the school counselors role and function has not trickled down to the building level as school counselors are still performing non-counseling duties. The disconnect lies with the authority responsible for assigning responsibilities for faculty and staff, the school administrator. It is not clear if school …

Beyond heightened academic requirements, student-athletes face a multitude of tasks including weight training, practice, film review, and travel for competition. This makes the student life very complex. Jolly (2008) indicated that as student-athletes progress through their Educational experience, they experience higher structured time demands in regard to their sport participation, this being very true for college freshman. Venezia and Jaeger (2013) noted that "many studies over the past ten years have documented the disconnect between what high school teachers teach and what postsecondary instructors expect with regard to …

From Stem To Mast: The Incorporation Of Science And Math Curriculum Into A Youth Sailing Program, Abigail Oakes Jan 2015

From Stem To Mast: The Incorporation Of Science And Math Curriculum Into A Youth Sailing Program, Abigail Oakes

Theses & ETDs

In the field of informal science education, there is little quantitative data to support the idea that sports and other outdoor recreational activities serve as effective platforms for science education. This study seeks to fill this gap by exploring the quantitative effects of incorporating a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) curriculum into a youth learn-to-sail program. The two research questions were: 1) Do students exhibit learning gains for the scientific concepts taught in a science-of-sailing curriculum? and, 2) Do students exhibit higher levels of proficiency in sailing when taught using a learn-to-sail curriculum that incorporates scientific concepts? A “science …
