Effects Of Comparison/Contrast Writing Instruction On The Reading Comprehension Of Tenth-Grade Students, Catherine Anne Baker Jan 1984

Effects Of Comparison/Contrast Writing Instruction On The Reading Comprehension Of Tenth-Grade Students, Catherine Anne Baker

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the influence of writing instruction on the reading comprehension of tenth-grade students. Although research has shown that instruction in the recognition of text structure can increase reading comprehension significantly and although it has been assumed that improvement in writing skill would improve reading skill as well, there has been little empirical research concerned with the actual influence of writing instruction. Thus, this study combined both ideas by attempting to determine the effect of writing instruction in text structure on reading comprehension. This study employed eight classes of tenth-grade students taught by four teachers in two high schools. …

The Effects Of L1 And L2 Instruction On The Metalinguistic Awareness Of Spanish-Speaking Children, Rene Merino Jan 1983

The Effects Of L1 And L2 Instruction On The Metalinguistic Awareness Of Spanish-Speaking Children, Rene Merino

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The Problem: While middle class students can succeed in L2 immersion programs, there is growing evidence that language minority students from low socioeconomic backgrounds do better in Ll programs. Jim Cummins' linguistic interdependency hypothesis resolves this apparent paradox by proposing that middle class students enter school with cognitive academic language proficiencies (CALF), which allow them to succeed in language mismatch situations. He claims that CALF is best developed in Ll and that schools should_teach language minority students in their first language. This study attempted to test the validity of Cummins' CALF construct. It also investigated the effects of Ll and …

Attack On The Eha: The Education For All Handicapped Children Act After Board Of Education V. Rowley, Karl Boettner Jan 1983

Attack On The Eha: The Education For All Handicapped Children Act After Board Of Education V. Rowley, Karl Boettner

Seattle University Law Review

The Rowley Court had the opportunity to reverse state erosions of the EHA. Unfortunately, the Court ratified and encouraged such attacks. The Court's educational benefit standard demands as little as Washington's "suitable education" standard. The Rowley Court suggested a way to sidestep the IEP process which is similar to Washington's avoidance method. Finally, the Court eliminated judicial review of state administrative decisions regarding educational standards and the educational programs of handicapped children. The Rowley Court justified this elimination by claiming that parental ardor and participation in the IEP process were sufficient remaining safeguards for handicapped children. However, effective exclusion of …

Hispanic Women: Schooling For Conformity In Public Education, Helen A. Moore Jan 1983

Hispanic Women: Schooling For Conformity In Public Education, Helen A. Moore

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The educational experiences of Latinas are tied to norms of an Anglocentric and androcentric school system. Based on a sample of 1,000 male and female Hispanic and Anglo elementary school students, we analyze teacher expectations for three dimensions: behavioral, social and academic achievements. Teachers do rate Hispanic females as more conforming to the behavioral norms of the school. Regression analyses indicate that higher teacher ratings are assigned to Hispanic females who combine high academic scores with low scores on behavioral conformity norms. These findings indicate that teachers reward assertiveness, leadership and action when considering future student success. The dilemmas of …

A Skill Based Approach To Organizing And Cataloguing Supplemental Reading Materials At The Elementary Level, Patricia E. Selby

All Graduate Projects

This project organized and catalogued all of the supplemental reading materials of an elementary reading room according to a reading skills code list. The code list was developed by consulting reading skills lists and the school district's student learning objectives. Fifteen major skill areas were included in the code list. Each was broken down into subskills which were assigned code numbers. Each supplemental material was examined and catalogued under the appropriate code number. A handbook was compiled which explained the system and listed all of the materials by skill area.
