Multiple Intelligences Theory, Action Research, And Teacher Professional Development: The Irish Mi Project, Joan Hanafin Apr 2014

Multiple Intelligences Theory, Action Research, And Teacher Professional Development: The Irish Mi Project, Joan Hanafin

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper presents findings from an action research project that investigated the application of Multiple Intelligences (MI) theory in classrooms and schools. It shows how MI theory was used in the project as a basis for suggestions to generate classroom practices; how participating teachers evaluated the project; and how teachers responded to the professional experience. Teachers reported successful student outcomes including more interest and motivation, better recall and deeper understanding, higher attainment, improved self-esteem, and more fun and enjoyable classroom experiences. For teachers themselves, the project was a challenge. They needed more planning time, more persistence, more collegiality, and more …

A 'Fundamental Theory' Of Education Grounded In Ontology? A Phenomenological Rejoinder, James M. Magrini Apr 2014

A 'Fundamental Theory' Of Education Grounded In Ontology? A Phenomenological Rejoinder, James M. Magrini

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This paper explores the phenomenological possibility of transcending the impoverished ontological state of contemporary "standardized" education (social efficiency), which forecloses original ways of Being-and-learning. Focused on the notion of phenomenological self-hood, I elucidate a fundamental educational theory, which holds the potential of inspiring a renewed conception of curriculum design and praxis. Envisioning a reconceived notion of world and human being, I look to the realm of "absorbed coping," a mode of Being-in-the-world that antedates both practical comportment and theoretical comportment. It is a mode of existence wherein we literally "learn" to respond to the "address" of …

Media Portrayal Of Individuals In The Lower Class And Its Effects On Attributions Of Educational Hardships, Krista A. Burke

Communication Studies

This study investigated how media portrayals of individuals in the lower class affect people’s beliefs about educational hardships in lower socioeconomic areas. Specifically, this study looked at the attributions of these hardships to determine if media consumption had an effect on the internality of attributions. It was hypothesized that increased media consumption would be related to an increased tendency toward internal attributions. It was hypothesized that increased media consumption would lead to lower support for policy changes regarding education. A survey was distributed to assess media consumption habits and attitudes toward educational hardships in the lower class. Correlation results yielded …

The N-Word: Lessons Taught And Lessons Learned, Neal A. Lester Jan 2014

The N-Word: Lessons Taught And Lessons Learned, Neal A. Lester

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

In the fall of 2008, I dared to teach a fifteen-week course that focused on a single word, a word arguably like no other, a word adorned with these emotionally colorful descriptors: “the most explosive of racial epithets,” “our cruelest word,” “the most toxic in the English language,” “the most troubling word in our language,” “almost magical in its negative power,” “six simple letters that convey centuries of pain, evil and contempt,” “an almost universally known word of contempt,” “occupies a place in the soul where logic and reason never go,” and “the filthiest, dirtiest, nastiest word in the English …

Policy Without Purpose: The Misalignment Of Policymakers' And Students' Perceptions Of The Goals Of Education, Carly Shannon Evans Jan 2014

Policy Without Purpose: The Misalignment Of Policymakers' And Students' Perceptions Of The Goals Of Education, Carly Shannon Evans

ETD Archive

This dissertation focused on understanding high school students' perception of the goals of education as they relate to those of policymakers, as these perceptions have largely been absent in the dialogue of education reform and policy. These goals may compete with each other, as do broader educational goals, reflecting different societal views of the purpose of education. Understanding students' perception of the goals of education (as framed by the goals of policymakers) may provide greater insight into current policy, and serve as a compass in directing future reforms that is inclusive of all stakeholders involved in this complex system. Using …

The Effect Of The Helps Program On The Oral Reading Fluency And Accuracy Rates Of Third-, Fourth-, And Fifth-Grade Students, Susan C. Blackburn

Education Dissertations and Projects

This dissertation was designed to examine the effects of the HELPS Program on the oral reading fluency and accuracy rates of third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade students as compared to students who received regular classroom instruction only. The study was conducted in a school district in northwestern North Carolina. The students in this study scored below benchmark on a Reading 3D End of Year Assessment and were nonproficient on the North Carolina end-of-grade reading test. As fluency is tied to reading comprehension, it is important that students have sufficient fluency and accuracy skills to read grade-level texts.

The study used Reading …

Developing A Program For Pre-Service Teachers Interested In Teaching Young Female Students In Rural Areas Of Developing Countries, Tanya M. Zeitler

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This capstone examines how training programs for pre-service teachers interested in teaching children in developing countries could be developed at the California State University (CSU) system level. Currently, there are few programs in place for teachers interested in teaching in developing countries. In order to teach abroad, they need to work for the Peace Corps or teach English in Korea, but training programs for pre-service teachers have not been institutionalized at the Institutions of Higher Learning (IHEs), such as CSU system. Teaching abroad usually creates a stigma for those who teach abroad and return to the United States, for one …

I Be Goin Places: Sociolinguistic Assimilation In A Baltimore Boarding School, Kade Doyle Needham Jan 2014

I Be Goin Places: Sociolinguistic Assimilation In A Baltimore Boarding School, Kade Doyle Needham

Theses & ETDs

I performed sociolinguistic ethnographic research at The SEED School of Maryland, a statewide public boarding school targeting students whose socioeconomic status hinders their academic potential. During the participant observation, I interviewed staff, teachers and students while collecting written and spontaneous speech samples from the classroom, dorms and cafeteria. The situationally-specific frequencies of AAVE-marked and AAVE-unmarked English measures assimilation into both academic and boarding school culture, offering a nuanced insight into the dimorphic social world of the students. In the end, I relate behavioral and linguistic developments to teaching styles, motivational tactics and the discipline system.

“Why Are There No Black Kids At Southside And No White Kids At Booker?”: Teachers’ Opinions On The Educational Achievement Gap In The City Of Sarasota, Grace Fisher Jan 2014

“Why Are There No Black Kids At Southside And No White Kids At Booker?”: Teachers’ Opinions On The Educational Achievement Gap In The City Of Sarasota, Grace Fisher

Theses & ETDs

In our current society, the work of teachers has often been criticized and devalued. So much so that much of the existing literature on the educational achievement gap fails to include their opinions on the matter. Therefore, my work examined Sarasota teachers’ opinions on the educational achievement gap. I used semi-structured interviews of eight elementary school teachers to show the teachers’ understanding of the cause of the gap and to explain these voices in relation to the existing literature. I find that teachers believe the achievement gap is influenced more by social class than preconceived beliefs of race. Social class, …

A Comparison Of Locus Of Control And General English Achievement In Students Of Medicine And Theology, Seyyed Ehsan Golparvar

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Locus of control refers to individuals’ orientation to attribute their successes and failures. Its effect on students’ academic achievement has scarcely been investigated within General English context. This study is aimed at exploring the difference in General English (GE) achievement between students of Medicine and Theology. It also examines the effect of locus of control (LOC) on GE achievement in these two groups of university students. University students’ General English scores serve as criteria for General English achievement. Fifty students of Medicine and fifty students of Theology participated in this study.
