Small-Dollar Children's Savings Accounts, Income, And College Outcomes, William Elliott, Hyun-A Song, Ilsung Nam
Center for Social Development Research
In this paper, we examine the relationship between children’s small-dollar savings accounts and college enrollment and graduation by asking three important research questions: (a) are children with savings of their own more likely to attend or graduate from college, (b) does dosage (having no account; having basic savings only; or having savings designated for school of less than $1, $1 to $499, or $500 or more) matter, and (c) is designating savings for school more predictive than having basic savings alone? We use propensity score weighted data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) and its supplements to create …

The Constitutional Issues Surrounding The Science-Religion Conflict In Public Schools: The Anti-Evolution Controversy, Michael M. Greenburg
The Constitutional Issues Surrounding The Science-Religion Conflict In Public Schools: The Anti-Evolution Controversy, Michael M. Greenburg
Pepperdine Law Review
Since the infamous Scopes trial the matter of the constitutional validity of the "anti-evolution" laws has plagued both legal scholars and school administrators. The courts have generally invalidated legislation which bans outright the teaching of evolution in public schools, but with the advent of the "balanced treatment" acts, a revival of this litigation has begun. The author examines the constitutional analysis utilized by the courts in dealing with the "anti-evolution" and "balanced treatment" acts and provides an historical perspective of the first amendment to question the Court's response to the issue.
Reducing Student Loan Debt Through Parents’ College Savings, William Elliott, Ilsung Nam
Reducing Student Loan Debt Through Parents’ College Savings, William Elliott, Ilsung Nam
Center for Social Development Research
One policy rationale for promoting Child Development Accounts (CDAs) is that they may help reduce college debt, but no research provides evidence of this. Research does suggest that high-dollar student loans ($10,000 or more) can reduce the probability that lower income students in particular persist in and graduate from college. In this study, we find evidence to suggest that parents’ college savings may reduce the probability that students accrue high-dollar student loan debt across all income levels with the exception of high-income students. Based on this and evidence from separate research on small-dollar children’s savings accounts, we suggest that it …
Learning In The Geoscience Classroom: Q-Methodology, Learning Styles, And Individual Preferences, R. Trevor Hall, Ryan R. Jensen, Daniel D. Mclean
Learning In The Geoscience Classroom: Q-Methodology, Learning Styles, And Individual Preferences, R. Trevor Hall, Ryan R. Jensen, Daniel D. Mclean
Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations
One of the challenges of traditional student learning, from an instructor's perspective, involves achieving an understanding of how students learn. Q-method is an effective approach to improve understanding of human subjectivity, and, as this research suggests, it is an appropriate tool to assist educators to better understand how students learn. In particular, Q-methodology provides the educator with a robust tool to assess student learning styles. This paper adapted an existing learning style instrument to a Q-method analysis in an introductory geographic information system class. The analysis resulted in three learning groups: lone pragmatist, explorer, and synergistic. These three learning groups …

Access Patterns Of Adhd Students Utilizing Campus Disability Services Supports, Meribeth L. Jackson
Access Patterns Of Adhd Students Utilizing Campus Disability Services Supports, Meribeth L. Jackson
Student Work
Source of initial access to disability services, accommodations received as supports on campus, and the rate of continuous enrollment data was measured and compared for students diagnosed with ADHD prior to age eighteen and those diagnosed with ADHD after age eighteen. These two groups were compared to analyze the assumption that students who were already immersed in a special services environment would be more capable of accessing services in the postsecondary setting more readily than those who had been newly diagnosed just prior to or after entering postsecondary education. Students with a diagnosis prior to age eighteen (n = 34) …

The Sustainability Of Community Participation Activities In Pre-University Education, Heba Yehia Abdel Megeed
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to examine the sustainability level of community participation models, which seek to enhance the role of the Board of Trustees (BOT) after the conclusion of donor support. I focus on one of the major community participation models in Egypt as a case study to identify strengths and barriers that exist in this kind of projects in Egypt and to understand its level of sustainability. Applying both qualitative and quantitative methods, this study looks at the continuation of activities after the end of donor support and compares schools that have been part of donor-support to …
Reimbursement Of Community Contributions To A Spouse's Education Upon Divorce: California Civil Code Section 4800.3, Suzanne E. Rand
Reimbursement Of Community Contributions To A Spouse's Education Upon Divorce: California Civil Code Section 4800.3, Suzanne E. Rand
Pepperdine Law Review
When the California Legislature passed California Civil Code section 4800.3, it attempted to create a remedy for the circumstances posed by the highly publicized case of In re Marriage of Sullivan. The legislature created a new cause of action for "reimbursement" of funds contributed to the education or training of a spouse. The question remains whether reimbursement is an equitable and workable remedy for the Sullivan type situation. This comment analyzes the section and suggests possible approaches to litigation of a section 4800.3 claim.

An Analysis Of Selective Service System V. Minnesota Public Interest Research Group, Teresa L. Howell
Pepperdine Law Review
Section 1113 of the Department of Defense Authorization Act passed in 1982 prohibits the receipt of Title IV educational funds by students who do not comply with draft registration requirements. In Selective Service System v. Minnesota Public Interest Research Group, the United States Supreme Court upheld section 1113 in the face of a multi-tiered constitutional challenge. After exploring the history of section 1113, the author examines the Supreme Court's analysis of each of the constitutional challenges: bill of attainder, privilege against self-incrimination, and equal protection. Finally, the author investigates the probable impact of the Court's decision.

Are Graduate Students Rational? Macroeconomic Determinants Of Graduate Enrollment And Completions In The Biomedical Sciences, John Clack
Economics ETDs
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) budget doubling from 1998 through 2003 stimulated demand for biomedical scientists, increasing both relative wages and employment. However, because research doctorates in these fields may take six years or more to complete, there is a substantial lag in the labor supply response to changing market conditions. Rational expectations models assume that prospective graduate students can forecast their expected future wages, taking into account other students likely responses and thus also future employment levels. However, prior research on student enrollment and degree completion in science and engineering fields suggests that market conditions at the time …

The Influence Of Culture And Identity On Second Language Acquisition: A Perspective From Egypt, Shirley Barber
The Influence Of Culture And Identity On Second Language Acquisition: A Perspective From Egypt, Shirley Barber
Theses and Dissertations
Often, in second language classrooms, little or no attention is given by the teacher or curriculum (including the Educational system) to the identity of the student. A student enters the classroom with his own identity and culture. When acquiring a second language, it is necessary for the student to absorb the culture of the second language, too (Spackman, 2009, p.2). This is where the issue of culture and identity influencing second language acquisition occurs. In general, students represent the identity and culture of their first language and where they come from. The purpose of this study is to examine the …

Defining Of A Peace Process Within Indigenous Research, Indigenous Ethics And The Implications In Psychology., Shaun L. Hains Ph.D.
Journal of Indigenous Research
An Indigenous Research process over sixteen years and during this time, a peace process emerged as a key element within Indigenous Research. The Indigenous Research included a school where and 100% of Native Students stayed in school (large urban school), work with mediators, and work with youth with special needs. The Indigenous Research was also during a time as Indigenous Ethics was being defined. When applied, it became clear that a working understanding of a peace process was needed. A peace process was defined that worked cross-culturally. This longitudinal work then was then placed within Indigenous Knowledge, Indigenous Research, Indigenous …

Surviving Broken Dreams : A Qualitative Study On The Resilience Of Undocumented Students, Kiam Parker
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative research study is to explore undocumented students perspectives of their experiences on their pathways to accessing higher education-the many obstacles they encounter and their resilience in facing these obstacles to pursue their educations. The complexities of these students experiences—living in the United States undocumented, their process of navigating the American education system and how this shapes how they perceive themselves and their life path--were examined through the narratives of six students who were enrolled in higher education, or planning to attend. The findings of this research showed that the unique psychosocial stressors undocumented students face--poverty, …

Millennial Students' Preferred Learning Style : Evaluation Of Collaborative Learning Versus Traditional Lecture Methods, Michelle Roa
Millennial Students' Preferred Learning Style : Evaluation Of Collaborative Learning Versus Traditional Lecture Methods, Michelle Roa
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Nurse educators are challenged with a new generation of students referred to as the Millennial generation. These millennial students, who have different learning style preferences, are testing the traditional pedagogical methods of nurse educators such as lecture. The social nature of millennial students coincides with the social constructivism theory that students learn in groups. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to examine if there was an improved retention of knowledge in millennial students who were taught by collaborative learning strategies rather than the traditional lecture method in an associate degree nursing program. Additionally, the study examined if learning by …
A Quantitative Study Of Persistence Factors For First-Year Students At Urban And Residential Universities, Abigail Parsons Shiban
A Quantitative Study Of Persistence Factors For First-Year Students At Urban And Residential Universities, Abigail Parsons Shiban
ETD Archive
Persistence from the first to second year of college can be challenging for students at urban institutions given that they face added pressures and unique situations preventing them from persisting beyond the first year of higher education. While first-year persistence in higher education has been investigated, very little formal research exists on persistence at urban institutions. To bridge this gap, a quantitative analysis of 395 students at two urban and two residential four-year public institutions in Ohio was conducted using the Social Integration and Persistence Intentions Scale (Pascarella & Terenzini, 1980) while exploring comprehensive factors such as students' pre-college and …
Education And Literacy, Carol Summers
Education And Literacy, Carol Summers

Loram's definition of education as planned by the powerful for the social construction of useful and 'good' Africans, along with his implicit concerns about bad or disruptive literate individuals, represented the views of many educationists during the colonial era. Such views, moreover, survived the end of colonial rule, re-emerging at the centre of shifting debates over how educational institutions and pedagogies should either persist or be challenged. Social utility defined education, not its specific content in reading, arithmetic, religious faith, business, or gardening. Struggles over educational planning were less over whether it was a form of social control than over …
