From Novice To Expert: Preparing Your Peer Review, Diana M Proctor, Rachy Abraham, Shannon Esher Righi
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Peer review is the process by which the quality of scholarly work is assessed prior to being published, presented, or funded. The consequences of flawed research entering the public domain in the "post-truth" era highlight the need to improve peer review quality, which we believe can be achieved by standardizing training. Here, we aim to enhance the quality of published literature by presenting a systematic guide to train new reviewers (and aid experienced ones) in the art of peer reviewing the rigor of scientific manuscripts.

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications
Purpose The flipped classroom (FC) model is increasingly used in undergraduate medical education, where it has been associated with improved knowledge acquisition. However, its impact on graduate medical education (GME) remains underexplored. We hypothesized that implementing a flipped didactics curriculum in our internal medicine residency program would improve performance on the Internal Medicine In-Training Examination (IM-ITE) and the American Board of Internal Medicine Certifying Examination (IM-CE). Methods In 2017, we transitioned from a traditional lecture-based (LB) curriculum to a flipped model. Noon conferences were replaced with problem-based learning (PBL) sessions three days per week, with additional active learning formats used …

RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be developed and implemented to address significant global challenges, including nutrient deficiencies, climate change, and crop disease. However, widespread opposition has prevented the success of GMOs. We believe this opposition is strongly connected to a lack of understanding about genetics in general, which has been reflected by previous studies.
In this study, we considered the relationship between GMO support and genetics knowledge by comparing results from a brief quiz and responses to prompts relating to GMOs. Using a survey of college students, we found that support for GMOs and general knowledge of genetics are positively …

This letter, signed by over 50 academic chairs of emergency medicine, urges the ACGME to reconsider a proposed mandate requiring all emergency medicine residency programs to adopt a four-year training model. The authors argue that current three-year programs are supported by data demonstrating equivalent educational and clinical outcomes compared to four-year formats. They criticize the flawed survey methodology underpinning the proposal, note the loss of milestone-based training flexibility, and highlight the lack of added scholarly or clinical value in the fourth year. The letter also outlines negative consequences for fellowship participation, workforce development, trainee debt, and diversity. The signatories advocate …

Decreasing Medication Errors Among Unlicensed Assistive Personnel, Tamara J. Carroll
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Unlicensed assistive personnel, although their role is controversial, are present in many different settings and have many varying roles and job responsibilities. Yet, removing this type of healthcare worker from the job pool may lead to increased labor costs, which could be stifling to some organizations and facilities. Digging deeper, data suggests errors are due to lack of a defined scope of practice, a lack of understanding of job roles and responsibilities and decreased confidence when working in the healthcare setting. The purpose of this project utilizes a setting specific educational intervention and skills check off to increase job self-efficacy …
