The subject of use of live animals by secondary schools either in classroom work or science fairs is a very controversial and often emotional issue. The author emphasizes the dedication to humane treatment of animals while at the same time explaining the process by which rules have been formulated to provide for the appropriate use of live animals. A general review of the variety of activities involving the direct use of animals which are undertaken in secondary schools. An assessment is made of their value (positive and negative) in terms of knowledge and attitudes (including ethics) which are, or might be, derived from them. Alternative methods also are reviewed with an assessment of their value in relation to live animal studies.

Development Of A Needs-Based Curriculum Plan In Environmental Education., James Edward Barr

A curriculum plan in environmental education for Louisiana was developed, based on needs established by analyzing the results of testing 1,412 tenth grade students from 53 public secondary schools in Louisiana for their knowledge and opinions about the environment. The instrument used in the survey consisted of 43 cognitive and 20 affective questions. The instrument was developed from objectives selected from other state plans by a panel of 35 scientists and educators from 12 departments at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Fifty-four public secondary schools were randomly selected. Fifty-three schools, 98 percent of the sample, returned the answer forms. …

An interactive information system has been developed for the College of Engineering to promote faster and more accurate trial advisement interviews between professors and the students they advice. This system also provides departmental administrative personnel with information to guide course scheduling. The system has the capability of providing the following information concerning undergraduate students enrolled in the College of Engineering: 1. A student's academic progress toward graduation. 2.
