Interrogating The Relationship Between Schools And Society. A Book Review Of Can Education Change Society?, Wayne Au
Democracy & Education
This reviewer found Can Education Change Society? a typical Apple text, far-ranging in terms of scope and example and theoretically and conceptually ambitious.
Peacelearning And Its Relationship To The Teaching Of Nonviolence. A Response To "Nonviolent Action As A Necessary Component In Educating For Democracy", Mary Lee Morrison Ph.D.
Peacelearning And Its Relationship To The Teaching Of Nonviolence. A Response To "Nonviolent Action As A Necessary Component In Educating For Democracy", Mary Lee Morrison Ph.D.
Democracy & Education
This response to Peterson's (2014) "Nonviolent Action as a Necessary Component in Educating for Democracy" enlarges the discussion of the role of the teacher/educator in deciding whether or when it is responsible to facilitate the engagement of students in acts of nonviolent dissent. Ultimately it would seem that the most important of our responsibilities as educators is to provide the moral and ethical foundations and the spaces in which students feel safe and empowered to tap into their own inner teachers. In order to promote the development of active engagement toward a democratic citizenry, including the moral imperative to transform …

LIB 322: Wicked Problems of Sustainability
Recognizing the dimensions and complexity of wicked problems, Phoenix Farms has decided to address the issue of sustainable illiteracy in Western Michigan. With a goal to work with local stakeholders, we have partnered with Sonder Farms in order to develop advertisements and classes aimed to raise awareness about, and interest in, sustainability. This partnership with Sonder Farms, a self-sustaining farm located in the Grand Rapids and Allendale communities, has given us the opportunity to put our skills, knowledge, and values to use in our local community. Sonder Farms practices conventional farming as well as aquaponics. Their hope is to target …
An Empirical Analysis Of The Role Of Geography In Sustainability Education, Makayla Jane Bonney
An Empirical Analysis Of The Role Of Geography In Sustainability Education, Makayla Jane Bonney
Theses
Many within and outside of the discipline of geography see it as a highly appropriate home for sustainability studies. Despite a history of human-environment education within geography and support from professional research or education organizations, some studies show that geography has not developed a lead role in sustainability education. This study examines the role of geography in offering "Sustainability Focused" courses as reported by AASHE STARS institutions with geography programs. The results show that although geography departments are highly utilized when available at an institution -offering the highest proportion of sustainability courses, averaging 14% of "Sustainability Focused" curriculum- there is …
Wilderness As A Social Movement: Expanding Cultural Relevance In The 21st Century, Dylan Lang
Wilderness As A Social Movement: Expanding Cultural Relevance In The 21st Century, Dylan Lang
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
This year is the 50th anniversary of two monumental pieces of legislation: the Wilderness Act and the Civil Rights Act. Though these two laws exist within different arenas of public affairs, both have had significant effects on American society.
The Wilderness Act was signed into law in 1964 with almost unanimous support, at a time when American society overwhelmingly supported its passage. Since 1964, wilderness has been criticized as an elitist ideal representing a small interest group in the United States. As our country becomes increasingly diverse, and public lands protection loses popular support, making wilderness more relevant to …
An African-Centered Approach To Land Education, Salvotore Engel-Dimauro, Karanja Keita Carroll
An African-Centered Approach To Land Education, Salvotore Engel-Dimauro, Karanja Keita Carroll
Publications and Research
Approaches to environmental education which are engaging with place and critical pedagogy have not yet broadly engaged with the African world and insights from Africana Studies and Geography. An African-centered approach facilitates people's reconnection to places and ecosystems in ways that do not reduce places to objects of conquest and things to be exploited for profitability and individual gain. Such an approach offers effective critiques of settler coloniser perspectives on the environment and deeper understandings of the relationship between worldview and ecologically sensitised education. Through examples from Africana Studies and Geography, this article provides an introduction to how an African-centered …
I Don't Want To Save Your Children, Katherine M. Patterson
I Don't Want To Save Your Children, Katherine M. Patterson
SURGE
A few weeks ago, the moment that I’ve been dreaming of for almost half of a year finally arrived. I started the Heston Summer Experience as an intern in Gettysburg. An embarrassing amount of my winter break was devoted to writing and rewriting my applications. After receiving an invitation for an interview, I convened my roommates to help me choose an outfit and ask me practice questions, which is not something I do…ever. Getting my acceptance letter in the mail was the ultimate highlight of a long and difficult year. When I was home for the first few weeks of …
Landscapes To Learnscapes: Exploring Schoolyard-Based Education, Emily I. Palena, Caroline T. Spurgin
Landscapes To Learnscapes: Exploring Schoolyard-Based Education, Emily I. Palena, Caroline T. Spurgin
Pitzer Senior Theses
This thesis explores schoolyard-based education as a viable and necessary method for rectifying the shortcomings within the American public school system and the Nature-deficit Disorder epidemic. We argue that schoolyard-based education should be fully integrated into the school system, not in the sole form of popularized school gardens, but as a standard teaching method. We show this using extensive research and a case study of three elementary schools in Claremont, California.
Through The Eyes Of Urban Students: Educational Inequality And Socioeconomic Disparities In Santiago, Chile, Hillary Sapanski
Through The Eyes Of Urban Students: Educational Inequality And Socioeconomic Disparities In Santiago, Chile, Hillary Sapanski
Honors Theses
This project explores student perceptions of educational inequality in Santiago, Chile. Educational inequality in Santiago is statistically well documented; this study is novel in that it gives voice to the students. Despite a major emerging middle class, across all classes there is an overwhelming awareness of inequality. The results in this study are two-fold: not only do the diverse student experiences illustrate the stark divisions in the Chilean education system and society, but their experiences also demonstrate the development of a critical consciousness empowering students to act. Although there are limitations, student contributions to the ongoing conversation about inequality and …
Knowledge, Attitudes And Practices Of Environmental Justice In Higher Education, Marjorie M. Nussbaum
Knowledge, Attitudes And Practices Of Environmental Justice In Higher Education, Marjorie M. Nussbaum
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Research suggests that issues of environmental justice are not being routinely included in the curriculum of the K-12 classroom and that teachers in those grades do not feel prepared to teach it. Likewise, little has been written about the addition of these topics to higher education coursework, leaving the question of inclusion at this level of education as well. This apparent lacuna may point to at least one reason why K-12 teachers are neither knowledgeable about environmental justice nor prepared to teach it. To discover the current state of inclusion in higher education, a mixed methods study was conducted to …
Links And Distinctions Among Citizenship, Science, And Citizen Science. A Reponse To "The Future Of Citizen Science.", Caren B. Cooper
Links And Distinctions Among Citizenship, Science, And Citizen Science. A Reponse To "The Future Of Citizen Science.", Caren B. Cooper
Democracy & Education
Mueller, Tippins, and Bryan (2012) presented a new conceptualization of citizen science that is meant to facilitate emerging trends in the democratization of science and science education to produce civically engaged students. I review some relevant trends in the field of citizen science, for clarity here referred to as public participation in scientific research (PPSR), and present overlooked styles and outcomes of PPSR. Education efforts should seize the opportunity to emphasize the key and distinct roles students can play in both the science and the values elements that inform decision-making processes.
Fostering Critical Thinking About Climate Change: Applying Community Psychology To An Environmental Education Project With Youth, Livia D. Dittmer, Manuel Riemer
Fostering Critical Thinking About Climate Change: Applying Community Psychology To An Environmental Education Project With Youth, Livia D. Dittmer, Manuel Riemer
Centre for Community Research Learning and Action
This article argues for the participation of community psychology in issues of global climate change. The knowledge accumulated and experience gained in the discipline of community psychology have great relevance to many topics related to the environment. Practitioners of community psychology could therefore make significant contributions to climate change mitigation. To illustrate this assertion, we describe an education project conducted with youth engaged in a community-based environmental organization. This initiative was motivated by the idea that engaged and critically aware youth often become change agents for social movements. Towards this purpose, rather than using mass marketing strategies to motivate small …

Sustainability With An Ethical Aim: Lessons From An American Nun In Amazonia, Stephanie Denise Demaree
Sustainability With An Ethical Aim: Lessons From An American Nun In Amazonia, Stephanie Denise Demaree
Doctoral Dissertations
Research Topic
Human imagination, an ethical aim and action are the progenitors for reconciliation between humans and their environment. Two examples of such reconciliation are found in Brazil and are the result of the tireless work of an American Nun, Sister Dorothy Stang and the staff of the Iracambi Atlantic Rainforest Research and Conservation Center. The present inquiry portrays the history, current programs, and the potential for the findings to shape the lives of those committed to work toward creating a balance between human endeavors and sustainable environments.

Understanding Self And Society Through The Visual Arts, Catherine Melendez
Understanding Self And Society Through The Visual Arts, Catherine Melendez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
There are growing concerns that traditional public schools fail in giving children a sound basis of values to prepare them to think critically and take responsible roles in society. This capstone project focused on using the rich resource of contemporary art to engage students in a discourse about present day social issues, and their relation to personal values and ethics. The project was comprised of five workshop classes held at the Boys and Girls Club in Santa Cruz for children ages eleven to thirteen. Each class was centered around a contemporary artist, or collective group of artists that have a …
Adolescent Geographies In The Classroom: Interactions With Place- And Community-Based Education, Anna Gahl Cole
Adolescent Geographies In The Classroom: Interactions With Place- And Community-Based Education, Anna Gahl Cole
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
The purpose of this study was to examine three phenomena, 1.) the classroom struggles and successes of students and teachers participating in a place- and community-based curriculum; 2). students personal geographies: their experiences, perspectives and interpretations of their homes, school, community and city; and 3.) interactions between community-based curriculum and students' geographies. This study goes to the intersection of place-based curriculum and students' geographies to explore the interactions that exist between these phenomena. Grounded in critical spatial, feminist standpoint, and constructivist theories, this study draws upon scholarship in Children's Geographies, place- and community-based education, and critical spatial studies. The Second …
In Service Of Whom?: The Impact Of Vincentian Universities' Institutional Investment Practices On Global Poverty, Charles R. Strain Ph.D.
In Service Of Whom?: The Impact Of Vincentian Universities' Institutional Investment Practices On Global Poverty, Charles R. Strain Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
Charles Strain discusses the role of Vincentian universities as responsible investors and as responsible citizens and how their business practices can help alleviate global poverty. He defines three principles with which to evaluate these practices: solidarity, subsidiarity, and a preferential option for the poor. Vincentian universities should always keep Catholic social teaching in mind and operate according to socially responsible investment (SRI). Strain explains what SRI is and how its components—shareholder advocacy, social screens, and community investment—can result in investments that are ethical and profitable. Community investment is a particularly effective means of alleviating poverty.
Community Gardens As Contexts For Science, Stewardship,And Civic Action Learning, Marianne E. Krasny, Keith G. Tidball
Community Gardens As Contexts For Science, Stewardship,And Civic Action Learning, Marianne E. Krasny, Keith G. Tidball
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Community gardens are heterogeneous environments that integrate environmental restoration, community activism, social interactions, cultural expression, and food security. As such, they provide a context for learning that addresses multiple societal goals, including a populace that is scientifically literate, practices environmental stewardship, and participates in civic life. Several theories are useful in describing the learning that occurs in community gardens, including those focusing on learning as acquisition of content by individuals, learning as interaction with other individuals and the environment and as increasingly skilled levels of participation in a community of practice, and social learning among groups of stakeholders leading to …

Legal Advocacy And Education Reform: Litigating School Exclusion, Dean Rivkin
Legal Advocacy And Education Reform: Litigating School Exclusion, Dean Rivkin
Scholarly Works
School exclusion has existed as a dark side of public education since the creation of America's public schools. Several cases in the United States Supreme Court memorably invalidated State and school system efforts to deny equal educational opportunities to marginalized school children and youth. In these cases, the over-riding multiple values of education were poignantly articulated in the majority decisions.
School exclusion has stubbornly persisted. It takes many forms. This article surveys the most prominent pathways to school exclusion, highlighting what has been called the "School-To-Prison-Pipeline." Various legal challenges are also evaluated. The pros and cons of litigating school exclusion …
Expanding The Ecological Consciousness Of Social Work Students: Education For Sustainable Practice, Peter Jones
Expanding The Ecological Consciousness Of Social Work Students: Education For Sustainable Practice, Peter Jones
EDU-COM International Conference
Social work has a long tradition of being explicitly concerned with the ‗person-in-environment‘, recognising the need to take account of context when working to address disadvantage and maximise wellbeing. This concern with environment, and indeed with the concept of sustainability has, however, been focused primarily on the social rather than the ecological (Coates 2003; Besthorne & McMillen 2002). At a time when increasing attention is being paid to the importance of promoting education about, and for, sustainability in higher education (Sipos, Battisti & Grimm 2008; Wright 2002; Thomas 2004), the social work profession also needs to begin engaging in a …

The Wooster Voice (Wooster, Oh), 2001-09-27, Wooster Voice Editors
The Voice: 2001-2011
The edition starts with an article discussing how Wooster officials predict students won't see an increase in federal financial aid, as Congress and the White House turn focus away from education spending and look to combating international terrorism. Members of the College's environmental activism group work to plan a regional conference. A state report pegs Ohio's new teachers as some of the best in the nation. Author and journalist Alan Weisman, presents an overview of his book "Gaviotas: A Village to Reinvent the World" to the Wooster Forum. Additionally, Mimi Lewellen, administrative assistant to the director of libraries, leaves Wooster …
