Effects Of Giftedness And Achievement On The Training And Transfer Of A Strategy For Solving Analogies, Jacqueline E. Muir-Broaddus

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This research explored group differences according to giftedness and achievement in the acquisition and generalization of a strategy for solving analogies. A distinction was made between proximal and distal transfer, with the latter expected to differentiate between gifted and nongifted cognition. Underachievement in gifted children was expected to reflect either strategy deficits, or the absence of performance differences in a theoretically important cognitive skill (generalization) between the so-called "underachieving" gifted and other bright but nongifted children. 162 seventh and eighth graders were selected according to intelligence and achievement scores, academic program, and teacher opinion, and assigned to one of four …

The problem was addressed by the implementation of an interdisciplinary program to increase basic skills in all areas of the curriculum. Activities designed to increase the target group's understanding of social studies concepts while practicing skills in reading, language arts, math, and science were incorporated into all subject areas utilizing a whole language approach. An emphasis on critical thinking and daily news events allowed for student growth in inferential comprehension and the formation of attitudes about the world. The …

An Evaluation Of The First College Of Saint Mary Summer English Program For Shokei College Students., David A. Nettelmann

Improved ability to speak the language of the host-country and increased understanding and appreciation of the culture and people of the host country are examples of those benefits. Host institutions are thought to benefit financially. They also benefit by the intercultural experience that international students offer the host community. The result has been a proliferation of programs developed over the last few decades by American colleges and universities for international students desiring to study English and American culture. Many of these programs occur during the summer. A …
