Decreasing Pre-Procedure Anxiety In School-Aged Patients In An Outpatient Surgery Setting Using A Video Prior To Anesthesia Induction, Michelle Charette

Dissertations

Anxiety occurs when a human feels a threat in response to a situation. Having surgery can heighten this psychological reaction, especially in pediatric patients undergoing anesthesia. Many children fear anesthesia for they do not understand what is expected of them nor what to expect when entering an operating room. When anxiety and fear are elevated, it can lead to behavioral changes, increases in postoperative pain, delays in wound healing, and postponement of discharge. Eliminating or reducing anxiety can result in positive outcomes for patients with pain, healing, and discharge. Literature supports the use of an educational video to aid in …

School Choice In Tennessee: A Violation Of The State Constitutional Right To A Substantially Equal Education, Emma Knapp

Lincoln Memorial University Law Review Archive

Most states have experimented with various versions of school choice over the past several years. While a federal right to education is not recognized, all fifty state constitutions provide some variation of an education clause, guaranteeing a state constitutional right to education. In Tennessee, satisfaction of the state constitutional right to education requires substantially equal educational opportunities for all students across the state. Despite this constitutional mandate, students in public schools across the state of Tennessee experience vast disparities in educational opportunities. Litigation is currently pending before the Tennessee Supreme Court regarding the constitutionality of the Tennessee Education Savings Account …

Snr: Software Library For Introductory Robotics, Spencer F. Shaw Aug 2021

Snr: Software Library For Introductory Robotics, Spencer F. Shaw

Master's Theses

This thesis introduces "SNR," a Python library for programming robotic systems in the context of introductory robotics courses. Greater demand for roboticists has pressured educational institutions to expand robotics curricula. Students are now more likely to take robotics courses earlier and with less prior programming experience. Students may be attempting to simultaneously learn a systems programming language, a library API, and robotics concepts. SNR is written purely in Python to present familiar semantics, eliminating one of these learning curves. Industry standard robotics libraries such as ROS often require additional build tools and configuration languages. Students in introductory courses frequently lack …

Standardized Testing And The Call For Alternative Assessment Methods, Rebekah Weiss Aug 2021

Standardized Testing And The Call For Alternative Assessment Methods, Rebekah Weiss

Masters Projects

Standardized testing has become the primary means of measuring success of students, educational stakeholders, and educational entities themselves, in turn permeating a practice of subsidiarity while further segregating educational opportunities for the American public. The research suggests this gap in practice is due to federal mandates enforcing standardized testing policies that hinder educational leaders from assessing students in more reliable ways. The experimental qualities of the research also contribute to this gap because the educational research holds a lack of generalizability and weak external validity due to subject and researcher bias’. This practice in subsidiarity could be addressed by taking …

Theses and Dissertations

Prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has increased 150% over the last 20 years, affecting all communities, with future projections of further rise. This is a particular concern for the public education system, where laws mandate that schools provide meaningful education to all students. Resources must be in place to provide the level of support children with ASD require for a successful educational experience. These resources are often expensive and require specialized training to secure. Rural schools face unique barriers meeting the standards set forth through federal law. To determine the most productive use of available resources as well as …
