A Study Of Advantages And Disadvantages Of Mainstreamed Hearing Impaired Students In A Regular Public School Classroom, Otis Perry

Student Work

On November 29, 1975, President Ford signed into law a multi-billion dollar aid measure to assist states in educating handicapped children. P.L. 94-142 requires that a state must agree to establish a goal of serving all handicapped children between the ages of three and eighteen by September 1, 1978, and children between three and twenty-one by September 1, 1980, in order to qualify for Federal Assistance. The Federal Assistance provided for this program is substantial as it will provide 40% of the excess cost for Special Education. This excess cost reaches its full potential no later than 1982.

The implimentation of PL 94-142 requires appropriate educational programming for all handicapped youngsters in the least restrictive environment. Some school districts may choose to integrate existing programs rather than to develop new ones. For preschoolers, integration could mean exposure at an early age to conditions that they may not fully understand and may in fact be fearful about.

How To Make A Token Economy Work: Goals And Variables Of Token Economies With The Institutionalized Mentally Retarded, Laura Ann Wade

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Token systems of reinforcement are an increasingly popular method of modifying the behavior of the institutionalized mentally retarded. The dramatic success of the token economy has resulted in its programmatic use without full consideration for the relevancy of treatment goals and the numerous variables that may contribute to the successful implementation and maintenance of the token economy. An examination of the treatment goals found in the existing literature reveals that two orientations presently exist: management/control and therapeutic/educative. Furthermore, a review of the literature reveals differing methods or variables may contribute to achieving a successful token economy with the mentally retarded. …

Bakke, DeFunis, and Minority Admissions: The Quest for Equal Opportunity

By Allan P. Sindler.

Sindler describes the admissions programs at the Universities of Washington and California-Davis, and the respective experiences of Marco DeFunis and Allan Bakke that preceded their litigation. Then, documenting the disparity in academic qualifications between accepted minorities and rejected nonminorities, Sindler addresses the broad issue before the courts. Is the reservation of academic "places" for minorities an inherently two-track system, which operates as an illegal quota to exclude "better-qualified" applicants; or may a school utilize race as a basis for selection in order to fulfill other commitments …

Results Of Kindergarten Roundup Screening: Rural Versus Suburban Children, Karen Mumma May 1979

Results Of Kindergarten Roundup Screening: Rural Versus Suburban Children, Karen Mumma

Student Work

Language is the vehicle for learning and the child who does not possess adequate language skills is handicapped in all areas of school instruction. Additionally, society evaluates child and adult in the academic setting, socially, and on the job by their ability to manipulate the English language. The school's accelerating expectations of entering kindergarteners has put additional pressures on the majority of children. The research in developmental linguistics has shown that a certain level of maturity must be reached before tasks can be learned. The problem for the entering kindergartener whose language development is depressed is compounded.
