The Effects Of Administrative Uses Of Computer Assisted Telecommunications On School Attendance, Carroll M. Helm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study is to determine if students who were called with a computer assisted dialing device would have a better attendance record than students who were not called. One hundred and fifty students from three East Tennessee schools were chosen at the beginning of the 1986-1987 school year to serve as the control group. At the end of the 1986-1987 school year another 150 students were selected from the same three schools who had been called with the computer dialing device. Students were compared based on their attendance record for the entire eight month period. Using the …

Listening Comprehension: Adult Second Language Learners, Mary Karen Williams

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

The goal of this work is to discover information that will improve the selection and design of listening comprehension materials for adult second language learners. Chapter 1 treats adult versus child language learning and first versus second language learning, finding that: (1) due to the interdependence between neurological and linguistic development, adult language learning is inherently different from a child's acquisition of his primary language, nevertheless, (2) given fundamental properties common to all language use, processing strategies should be similar for first and second languages. Chapter 2 treats listening and reading as receptive (but not passive) skills. Here it is …

Actual And Ideal Role Perceptions Of Instructional Supervisors In The Public Schools Of Virginia, Sandra C. Richardson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem of this study was to determine if differences existed in the perceptions of selected public school instructional supervisors regarding the amount of actual and ideal time allocated for identified supervisory roles. The study was conducted during the 1986-87 school year in Virginia. A questionnaire, developed by the researcher, was field tested through a six-week pilot study with 100 instructional supervisors in Virginia. Upon validation of the instrument, it was mailed to a randomly selected sample of 363 instructional supervisors in Virginia. A total of 220 respondents (60.6%) returned the questionnaire. Significant differences were found in perceived allocation of …

A Structured Writing Program To Improve Fluency And Attitudes Of Seventh Grade Students In A Basic English Program, Janifer Gorney

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The intent of this practicum was to increase writing fluency and improve writing attitudes exhibited by a group of seventh grade students with Yaqui and Hispanic backgrounds. During a period of 16 weeks, a writing unit was implemented consisting of twenty structured activities to guide students in presenting their ideas and to increase their chances for success. As students' fluency increased, the patterns and models given became less structured so that students used more of their own ideas.

Evaluation was conducted through the use of Quality Writing Guidelines as well as student and parent follow-up surveys. Results indicated increased levels …

Create A New Town And A New You To Improve Writing Skills, Barbara Broadfoot Jun 1987

Create A New Town And A New You To Improve Writing Skills, Barbara Broadfoot

Theses

Writing has always been one of the corners tones of American education . Schools are concerned with the development of students, and writing contributes to the development of the whole person. The public is alarmed because many students graduate from high school without being able to write well enough to function in today's complicated society.

There a re many reasons why schools fail to do a good job in the teaching of writing. One of the main reasons is the schools' over-emphasis on the teaching of grammar. Many teachers are not trained as teachers of writing and rely on the …

A Comparative Study Of The Verbal Achievement Of Students Who Study Foreign Language And Those Who Do Not Study Foreign Language, Rosemary Simpson Apr 1987

A Comparative Study Of The Verbal Achievement Of Students Who Study Foreign Language And Those Who Do Not Study Foreign Language, Rosemary Simpson

Student Work

The history of foreign language training has emphasized a positive connection between learning another language and learning one's own (Schilling, 1985; Coleman, 1929). Educators believe that through concentration on individual words, grammar, and structure, foreign language heightens the student's awareness of verbal expression in general. Although children begin to speak English at an early age, progress is a result of informal repetition and mimicry. Many junior high students can speak reasonably well but are hard-pressed to distinguish nouns from verbs because they have not examined their own language closely. On the other hand, foreign language students frequently acknowledge greater understanding …

A Study Of Self-Perceived Current And Desired Career Stages Of Federal Government Engineers And Public School Educators In The Central Florida Area, Dennis Stephan Duke

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the perceptions of public school educators and Federal Government engineers in the Central Florida area to determine their self-perceived current and desired career stages (Dalton, Thompson and Price, 1977). The influences of age, education and tenure variables on these perceptions and on the employee's preference for a technical or managerial career track were also examined. The rationale for the study is based upon findings in the literature which indicate that both occupations are experiencing motivation and retention problems caused by the requirement to leave classrooms or technical engineering positions and enter management ranks in order to gain …

Teaching Aboriginal Children: Milingimbi And Beyond, Michael Christie (Ed.) Jan 1987

Teaching Aboriginal Children: Milingimbi And Beyond, Michael Christie (Ed.)

Research outputs pre 2011

The original intention of the contributors was to write a book about their experiences as teachers at Milingimbi in Arnhem Land. Initially, articles were obtained from only those people who had actually taught at Milingimbi. However, theory and practice have changed a great deal since the original articles were put together in 1978. Some of those articles became dated; others were repetitious; some were simply not good enough to be printed.

The collection of articles now presented were all written by people who have taught in Arnhem Land - hence the use of the Arnhem Land words yolngu (Aboriginal) and …

Cognitive Strategy Training Effects On Reading Comprehension In Learning-Disabled Readers., Erin Cuccia Agostini Jan 1987

Cognitive Strategy Training Effects On Reading Comprehension In Learning-Disabled Readers., Erin Cuccia Agostini

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study was conducted to investigate the hypothesis that learning disabled children with reading deficits demonstrate a "production deficiency" by failing to spontaneously employ appropriate cognitive strategies in reading situations. Moreover, it was anticipated that providing them with explicit instruction regarding these strategies would improve their comprehension. Thirty learning disabled seventh- and eighth-grade students were randomly assigned to one of three training conditions: (a) summarization, (b) self-questioning, and (c) control. The effectiveness of the training strategies was assessed by having students write an 80-word summary and answer a 10-item multiple choice comprehension test on each of two passages during three …

The Effect Of Vocal Modeling On Pitch-Matching Accuracy Of Children In Grades One Through Six., Georgia A. Green Jan 1987

The Effect Of Vocal Modeling On Pitch-Matching Accuracy Of Children In Grades One Through Six., Georgia A. Green

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of adult female, adult male, and child vocal modeling on the pitch-matching accuracy of children in grades one through six. Because singing is a basic component of the elementary music curriculum and is a skill which a child will continue to use throughout his/her life, it is important to determine how a child can most successfully develop and use his/her singing voice. Existing literature indicates that those factors which most directly affect a child's singing ability are maturation, auditory discrimination, vocal range, and vocal modeling. Conflicting results exist as to …

The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service: A Descriptive History Of Its Origin And Development. (Volumes I And Ii)., Edwin Clark Forrest Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation studies the conditions which brought the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service (LCES) into existence in 1914 and which have sustained it for over 70 years. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that 40 percent of Russia's population consists of farmers and that approximately 70 percent of China's population are farmers. The significance of these figures in relation to productivity is apparent when contrasted with the United States farm population of 2 percent. The current high level of production in American agriculture, sustained by such a small percentage of the population, is not an accident, as Professor Roy V. Scott, …
