Using Cluster Analysis To Evaluate The Academic Performance Of Demographic Homogeneous Subsets, Jeffrey N Halsell Jan 2007

Using Cluster Analysis To Evaluate The Academic Performance Of Demographic Homogeneous Subsets, Jeffrey N Halsell

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

No Child Left Behind (NCLB) requires states to develop, under very specific conditions, a valid and reliable system of measurement that meets certain requirements while neglecting others. One such provision is a system of assessments that holds all schools to the same academic criteria, regardless of circumstance, while at the same time acknowledging an achievement gap exists between certain subpopulations of students. Nevada has developed such a program, which effectively fulfills the requirements of NCLB, and like NCLB, neglects to recognize the unique challenges for those schools housing larger than average populations of lower-performing students; Historically, when discussing the achievement …

This study evaluates the relationship among three commonly administered phonics measures. "Pseudoword Decoding," a norm-referenced assessment from Wechsler Individual Assessment Test - II (WIAT-II), the "Primary Spelling Inventory" and the "Names Test," criterion-referenced instruments, were administered to a general population of 56 second-grade students with mixed reading abilities. The "Elision" subtest, a norm referenced assessment from the "Phonological Awareness" composite on the Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing (CTOPP), was also administered to all 56 students to discover whether the phonics measures correlated with it. Pearson product moment correlations were used to compare the four measures. Significant correlations were found among …

Survey On Use Of Continuous Performance Tests In Clinical Practice, Olivia Lee Leverich

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current study explored both the prevalence of CPT use and the process of use across disciplines. Two hundred fifty-five clinicians completed a brief web-based survey that was created expressly for use in this study, addressing CPT usage patterns and demographic information. It was hypothesized that there would be differences in the levels of reported use of CPTs related to discipline (clinical vs. counseling vs. school); that less than half of clinicians surveyed would report use of a CPT for any purpose; that clinicians who are more familiar with the literature on CPTs would be less likely to report regular …

Cybercounseling: A Comparison Of The Elements Of Counseling Sessions Face-To-Face And Over Instant Message, Ryan M. Long

Master's Theses and Capstones

The purpose of this study was to compare key elements of a counseling session across both face-to-face sessions and sessions occurring over cyberspace via synchronous chat such as instant message or chat room. The key elements of a counseling session compared in this study included the interview environment, physical and psychological attending, interpreting verbal communication, and interpreting nonverbal communication. The results of this study, though not statistically significant, suggest that credentialed distance counselors perceive counseling via instant message to offer less opportunity to create a facilitating counseling environment, less opportunity for interpretation of nonverbal communication, and less opportunity for psychological …

Master's Theses and Capstones

This qualitative study pinpoints the particular circumstances surrounding special teacher-created programs and projects, both in classrooms and in after-school settings, showing how such programs operate under social conditions and engage social processes not generally found in routine public school instruction. For that very reason these are able to include an emphasis on community, play, and heterogeneous grouping. The case considered here is that of an after-school student publishing program in the Northeastern United States, and follows the history and progress of the program. The program in this elementary school was created and organized to develop and extend student literacy. It …

Completing The Circle: The Mindset And Therapeutic Implications Of The Wilderness Solo, Fritz P. Wenzler Jan 2007

Completing The Circle: The Mindset And Therapeutic Implications Of The Wilderness Solo, Fritz P. Wenzler

Master's Theses and Capstones

The purpose of this research was to examine the background of the wilderness solo and consider the factors that most affect the outcome of this experience. After completing a literature review of this subject area, I went on my own solo and compared my mindset during this experience to my previous experience and knowledge of the solo. The conclusions that I have made are purely subjective and should not be taken as anything else. I believe, however, that since the solo is a subjective activity based upon the participant's inner reflections, it should be researched in a qualitative, subjective manner. …

What Now?: Evaluating Elearning Cpd Practice In Irish Third-Level Education, Roisin Donnelly, K. C. O'Rourke

Journal Articles

The internet has made it impossible for higher education institutions to ignore technology in fulfilling their strategic mission and respond to the expectations of a diverse student body. In the Republic of Ireland, as elsewhere, the use of online technologies has become an increasingly important challenge in academic staff development, and on the surface, eLearning has been moderately successful in the teaching and learning environment. However, given the rapid rate of change in both technology and the increasing diversity in academic staff and students, to describe accurately the nature of eLearning for academic staff development is near impossible. There has …

Students @ Play: Serious Games For Learning In Higher Education., Pauline Rooney

Conference papers

The rise of digital games over recent years has been exponential. While many are used for entertainment, digital games have also begun to permeate education — which has lead to the coining of the term ―serious games‖ [1]. Proponents of serious games argue that they hold enormous potential for learning [2], by embodying a range of pedagogical strategies. While some have adopted commercial games for use in the classroom, others have designed games specifically for educational purposes. However, designing complex and realistic serious games with limited budgets and resources is difficult. In addition, achieving a successful balance between the competing …

Life As A Student At An Independent Day School, Diana R. Torres

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study explores the interconnectedness of social class, education, and cultural capital. Considered academically elite, the independent school is be an ideal environment to find increased instances and opportunities for the acquisition and reproduction of elite, or "dominant" cultural capital. By implementing an ethnographic approach within an independent school setting, this study attempts to illuminate the student experience through adolescents' eyes. Past cultural capital studies focus on the relationship between cultural capital and academic achievement and/or social reproduction; instead, this study focuses on the everyday student experiences as they point to potential indicators of cultural capital.
