The Hom-School, Malik Benjamin Jan 2009

The Hom-School, Malik Benjamin

Open Access Theses

During the second half of the 20th century, there was an epic deterioration of the urban fabric of the typical American neighborhood. Starting with the fleeing of city dwellers into the outskirts of suburbia in the 1950s and the exodus of commercial institutions in the 1970s, neighborhood sprawl hit its stride with the elimination of the neighborhood school in the 1980s. With this community-defining component being replaced by giant, remote educational facilities, the American neighborhood was finally a shell of its former self. If the neighborhood represents the cell, then the home represents the nucleus. In 2003, 1.1 million children …

Manipulative And Visual Model Based Activities For The Algebra One Curriculum, Sara Valancy Jan 2009

Manipulative And Visual Model Based Activities For The Algebra One Curriculum, Sara Valancy

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Algebra One can be a very abstract subject that often consists solely of lecture and formulas, and fails to address multiple learning styles. As a result, many students become confused as to when and why to perform a certain operation or apply a formula. Manipulatives and visual models provide a way for algebra to become more approachable to all learning styles and offer a concrete representation of an abstract concept. They give meaning as to why to perform an operation and what the intention of a formula is. The curriculum that was created and compiled for this project was prepared …

Bitter Knowledge: Socrates And Teaching By Disillusionment Appendix C - The Theaetetus, Thomas D. Eisele

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

It was been suggested (and here I am thinking in particular of comments made by Professor William Prior) that my book, Bitter Knowledge, would benefit from a more comprehensive attention to the argumentative details of the dialogues studied there. Professor Prior specifically suggests that, if we were to be given more of their argumentation, we might better appreciate the motivation or the disposition of the speakers in the dialogues under study.

The book as designed, as submitted in typescript, and as accepted for publication, included three appendices. These appendices comprised detailed outlines of the speakers and events portrayed in, respectively, …

A Preliminary Comparison Of Student Outcomes Between Distanceeducation Modalities And Traditional Campus-Basededucation, Andreas M. Kummerow

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A comparison of student outcomes between a distanceEducation and campus-based is presented. Although there is dynamic growth in distanceEducation, there is little to no data available on learning outcomes aimed specifically at licensed practical nursing/licensed vocational nursing (LPN/LVN) students working toward baccalaureate degrees and registered nursing (RN) licensure. Learning outcomes were evaluated using results from a commercially developed content mastery test taken by students having completed a sophomore level mental health course. Admission criteria required students enrolled in the distanceEducation program to have a current LPN/LVN license while the students used for comparison in a classroom setting did not have …

Identity & Learning : A Zine Project, Dorrie Coman Jan 2009

Identity & Learning : A Zine Project, Dorrie Coman

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Current educational practices and policies erode and ignore student's racial, cultural, socioeconomic, and gender identities forcing students to leave their unique characteristics at the classroom door in order to become socially acceptable. This erosion has many negative implications for students, including lack of motivation and interest in learning, failing, and dropping out. In the project, students created Zines, self-published self-distributed texts that include a variety of formats, mediums, and topics, with the goal of exploring and expressing their identity while meeting content standards. The objectives were to use what students bring into the classroom to motivate them to learn, to …

The curriculum focuses on the Food Pyramid guidelines, understanding food labels, preparing food at home, eating at restaurants, and taking control of one's health through healthy nutritional habits. The components of the curriculum include lesson plans, helpful resource materials, worksheets, discussion topics, handouts, and …

Educators! : Physically Challenged Students Want To Have Fun, Juan Gonzales-Medina

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This project focuses on bringing awareness among educators on the issues concerning schooling elementary (k- 5) students with physical disabilities. This is achieved through the creation of a friendly workshop, where educators are presented with information on understanding their students' unique needs and how to help them succeed inside the classroom. The workshop contains five different components: a presentation, informative video, instructional activities, and discussions, along with two surveys. Furthermore, each aspect of the workshop inserts other educators' opinions throughout the entire presentation. In other words, educators are able to learn from each other rather than just listening to the …

Creating A Warm And Inclusive Classroom Environment: Planning For All Children To Feel Welcome, Jessica L. Bucholz Ed.D., Julie L. Sheffler

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

The type of classroom environment that a teacher creates and encourages can either increase or decrease a student's ability to learn and feel comfortable as a member of the class. The classroom environment should do as much to foster cooperation and acceptance as the teaching methods that the teacher uses. This article describes a number of methods to help teachers plan for and create a classroom that welcomes and supports all children.

Novel Word Learning Of Children With Hearing Impairment And Children With Typical Hearing, Matthew R. Clark Jan 2009

Novel Word Learning Of Children With Hearing Impairment And Children With Typical Hearing, Matthew R. Clark

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Children with hearing impairment may be at risk for reading difficulty due, in part, to delayed vocabulary development. However, advances in amplification technology, most notably cochlear implant technology, make it possible for children with profound hearing loss to acquire oral language. This study asked if novel word learning differed between children with typical hearing and those with severe to profound hearing loss who either wore hearing aids or had cochlear implants. Children learned nonsense words as names for Beanie Babies during a play scenario and were later asked to identify and name each Beanie Baby using its correct nonsense word …

We used data obtained from wedding announcements in the New York Times newspaper from 1971 through 2005 (N = 2,400) to test 9 hypotheses related to brides’ decisions to change or retain their maiden names upon marriage. As predicted, a trend was found in brides keeping their surname, and correlates included the bride’s occupation, education, age, and the type of ceremony (religious versus nonsectarian). Partial support was found for the following correlates: officiants representing different religions, brides with one or both parents deceased, and brides whose parents had divorced or separated. There was mixed support for the hypothesis that a …

The Case For Participatory Education, Stephen Thornton-Taylor

Participatory learning or "Participatory Education" as a formal declaration of either ideology or praxis has yet to be written and I would certainly not attempt to write one in the current educational capacity I now find myself in however I have found myself in the unique position of actually being first to something and so have decided to enjoin the relatively scant sketches of, as far as the great blade of written history is concerned, cutting edge economic philosophy with the over-personal, absolutely singular experience of a student-teacher in Cleveland, Ohio. The principles of Participatory Education are adapted from the …

Teach The Children: Education And Knowledge In Recent Children's Fantasy, Elisabeth Rose Gruner

English Faculty Publications

This essay is an investigation into how learning is portrayed in children's books. It starts from two premises: first, that at least one origin of children's literature is in didacticism, and that learning and pedagogy continue to be important in much of the literature we provide for children today. Thus, for example, David Rudd claims that most histories of children's literature on "the tension between instruction and entertainment," and that the genre as we know it develops within, among other things, "an educational system promoting literacy" (29, 34). Seth Lerer's recent Children's Literature: A Reader's History similarly traces the origins …
