Undergraduate Student Motivation In Modularized Developmental Mathematics Courses, Keith Allen Pachlhofer
Undergraduate Student Motivation In Modularized Developmental Mathematics Courses, Keith Allen Pachlhofer
Theses and Dissertations
This study used the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire in modularized courses at three institutions across the nation (N = 189), and multiple regression was completed to investigate five categories of student motivation that predicted academic success and course completion. The overall multiple regression analysis was significant and two variables, Task Value and Self-Efficacy, were significant in predicting student progress in the course. Also, open-ended items were collected to help determine the students’ evaluation of what helps them to succeed and this was then compared to the findings from the multiple regression analysis.

Overall, the goal of this Capstone project is to produce useful materials in …
Predicting Underperformance From Students In Upper Level Engineering Courses, William J. Darlington
Predicting Underperformance From Students In Upper Level Engineering Courses, William J. Darlington
Theses
Recent research in academic analytics has focused on predicting student performance within, and sometimes across courses for the purpose of informing early interventions. While such an endeavor has obvious merit, modern contructivist learning theory expresses an importance on more individualized support for students. In keeping with this theory, this research describes the development of a model that predicts student performance within a course, relative to their past academic performance. This study is done using the minimum sources of data possible while still developing an accurate model. Useful logistic models using data from the institution’s student information system, learning management system, …
Educating Students In Poverty: Building Equity And Capacity With A Holistic Framework And Community School Model, Dan W. Rea, Cordelia D. Zinskie
Educating Students In Poverty: Building Equity And Capacity With A Holistic Framework And Community School Model, Dan W. Rea, Cordelia D. Zinskie
National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal
Educators are often blamed for the achievement gap between low-income and higher income students. We propose to replace the divisive “blame game” with a holistic framework for collaborative action between schools, families, and communities. This 5H Holistic Framework (5HHF) is composed of the 5H protective factors (Health, Hands, Heart, Head, Home). These protective factors holistically address the educational needs and capacities of all students—especially students in poverty—for physical/mental health (Health), safety/security (Hands), social-emotional care (Heart), cognitive development (Head), and family/community support (Home). The 5HHF is used to identify and organize best educational practices and to recommend the community school model …

Interview With Eric Jensen: Enriching Mindsets For Teachers Of Students In Poverty, Dan W. Rea
National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal
In this interview, Eric Jensen, an internationally recognized speaker and writer on student poverty and brain-based learning, discusses how the educational mindsets and practical strategies from his latest two books, Poor Students, Rich Teaching: Mindsets for Change (2016) and Poor Students, Richer Teaching: Mindsets for Change (2017), can enrich the learning of students in poverty. Some of the new mindsets include how to enrich classroom relationships, student achievement, student engagement, and school climate for student success.
Implementing For Success And Sustainability, Michele Paulo
Implementing For Success And Sustainability, Michele Paulo
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Nurses, including those with additional education and training as professional development specialists, face challenges to implementing evidenced-based practice changes effectively and efficiently. Nurse bedside performance can drift away from evidence-based practice (EBP) and revert to methods previously taught when the strategy, planning and implementation lacks resources to support sustainable change. While knowledge and skills attainment are important, they do not ensure the successful transition in practice change at the point of care. An intervention has been developed that integrates several evidence-based implementation concepts and frameworks into a single framework named the Identify and DRIVE framework. Additionally, the Identify and DRIVE …

On Novices' Interaction With Compiler Error Messages: A Human Factors Approach, James R. Prather, Raymond Pettit, Kayla Holcomb Mcmurry, Alani Peters, John Homer, Nevan Simone, Maxine Cohen
School of Information Technology and Computing
The difficulty in understanding compiler error messages can be a major impediment to novice student learning. To alleviate this issue, multiple researchers have run experiments enhancing compiler error messages in automated assessment tools for programming assignments. The conclusions reached by these published experiments appear to be conflicting. We examine these experiments and propose five potential reasons for the inconsistent conclusions concerning enhanced compiler error messages: (1) students do not read them, (2) researchers are measuring the wrong thing, (3) the effects are hard to measure, (4) the messages are not properly designed, (5) the messages are properly designed, but students …
Employing Multivariate Logistic Regression Analysis To Better Understand The Relationship Between Individuals’ Anthropogenic Climate Change Acceptance And Belief In Anti-Climate Change Dissenter Messages, Andrew Phillip Keller Bentley
Employing Multivariate Logistic Regression Analysis To Better Understand The Relationship Between Individuals’ Anthropogenic Climate Change Acceptance And Belief In Anti-Climate Change Dissenter Messages, Andrew Phillip Keller Bentley
Dissertations
Organized climate change dissention groups spend a considerable amount of time and energy developing messages designed to convince the public that anthropogenic climate change is neither a reality nor a threat. These messages work against the efforts of climate educators and can be divided into two categories; messages that provide alternative explanations for warming, or messages that attack the work of scientists studying anthropogenic climate change. There has been a lack of research regarding any correlation between individuals’ agreement with these messages and their rejection of anthropogenic climate change. Establishing a correlation would be an indication that educators should take …

Best Practices For Differentiated Learning Among Third Through Fifth Grade Ell Students, Tara J. Macias
Best Practices For Differentiated Learning Among Third Through Fifth Grade Ell Students, Tara J. Macias
Masters Theses
With the increase of second language English learners in U.S. kindergarten through twelfth grade schools and the continued achievement gap between these students and English speaking students, educators and administrators need to develop, implement and support best practices for differentiation among English Language Learners. ELL students are often categorized as special education students while their only barrier to learning is language acquisition. On the other hand, ELL students may have additional learning difficulties that are not identified because there is an assumption that language acquisition is the single challenge to their learning. Educators often engage in whole group instruction with …

A Testimonio Reclaiming Acceptance Of My Esl Experience: Trauma, Tex-Mex And Third Space, Cinthia E. Bernal
Theses and Dissertations
Language is a tool that brings all of us together, yet at the same time it also sets us apart. For many of us, it is important to be bilingual and biliterate, but for others, bilingualism is something that is pulling this country apart. Many people, after all, view Spanish as a powerful language that can harm this country, a language that has motivated people to attempt to make English the only language. Ana Celia Zentella tell us “Latina/os, who also have a long history in the United States and became the largest minority in the nation in 2003, are …

Supporting Nurse Education In The Implementation Of A Pediatric Delirium Assessment Protocol In The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Lucy Camarena, Rn, Bsn, Cnl, Cpn, Phn
Master's Projects and Capstones
Delirium has historically been under studied, more so in the pediatric population, despite its long term effects on patients’ health. The deficit in knowledge of delirium leads to an increase in hospital stays and unnecessary unit expenses. My intention with this change project is to increase the awareness of delirium in the pediatric delirium by providing an educational intervention to the PICU nurses. After conducting a root cause, SWOT and cost analysis, I determined that successful education of the PICU nurses about delirium could substantially decrease its incidence. Using Ronald Lippitt’s Change Theory and the CNL competencies as guides I …

Fabrication Of Silicon Photonic Devices Using I-Line Lithography, Sanjna Lakshminarayanamurthy
Theses
Silicon Photonics is a promising new technology for realizing efficient, high performance interconnects. There is a growing need for educating future engineers on how to design, fabricate, package and test silicon photonic circuits. Silicon photonic processing for an educational institution with i-line lithography capabilities is demonstrated and the thesis elaborates on the fabrication process used for realizing passive photonic devices and circuits (i.e. waveguides, interferometric structures and fiber chip grating couplers). The process is realized in a CMOS compatible environment which has been in use since 1986 to teach microelectronic engineering. And is now also being used to support the …

Using Visual Analogies To Teach Introductory Statistical Concepts, Jessica S. Ancker, Melissa D. Begg
Using Visual Analogies To Teach Introductory Statistical Concepts, Jessica S. Ancker, Melissa D. Begg
Numeracy
Introductory statistical concepts are some of the most challenging to convey in quantitative literacy courses. Analogies supplemented by visual illustrations can be highly effective teaching tools. This literature review shows that to exploit the power of analogies, teachers must select analogies familiar to the audience, explicitly link the analog with the target concept, and avert misconceptions by explaining where the analogy fails. We provide guidance for instructors and a series of visual analogies for use in teaching medical and health statistics.
A Quantitative Reasoning Approach To Algebra Using Inquiry-Based Learning, Victor I. Piercey
A Quantitative Reasoning Approach To Algebra Using Inquiry-Based Learning, Victor I. Piercey
Numeracy
In this paper, I share a hybrid quantitative reasoning/algebra two-course sequence that challenges the common assumption that quantitative literacy and reasoning are less rigorous mathematics alternatives to algebra and illustrates that a quantitative reasoning framework can be used to teach traditional algebra. The presentation is made in two parts. In the first part, which is somewhat philosophical and theoretical, I explain my personal perspective of what I mean by “algebra” and “doing algebra.” I contend that algebra is a form of communication whose value is precision, which allows us to perform algebraic manipulations in the form of simplification and solving …

Patternlets — A Teaching Tool For Introducing Students To Parallel Design Patterns, Joel C. Adams
Patternlets — A Teaching Tool For Introducing Students To Parallel Design Patterns, Joel C. Adams
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
Thanks to the ubiquity of multicore processors, today's CS students must be introduced to parallel computing or they will be ill prepared as modern software developers. Professional developers of parallel software think in terms of parallel design patterns, which are markedly different from traditional (sequential) design patterns. It follows that the more we can teach students to think in terms of parallel patterns, the more their thinking will resemble that of parallel software professionals. In this paper, we present patternlets—minimalist, scalable, syntactically correct programs, each designed to introduce students to a particular parallel design pattern. The collection currently includes 44 …

Developing Teenage Testimonies: Programs And Pedagogy With Spiritual Impact, John Hilton Iii, Anthony Sweat
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
One of the key objectives of religious educators is to facilitate spiritual growth that leads to the making and keeping of covenants. This purpose is stated in various ways by different organizations of the Church. For example, “the purpose of the Young Women organization is to help each young woman be worthy to make and keep sacred covenants and receive the ordinances of the temple.” The objective statement of Seminaries and Institutes (S&I) states in part, “Our purpose is to help youth and young adults understand and rely on the teachings and Atonement of Jesus Christ, qualify for the blessings …

It will then explore some possible solutions to this problem and how a combination of some tools (teaching methods) can create the best possible outcome. It is my belief that this approach can produce successful Hispanics to …
Understanding Integrated Stem Science Instruction Through The Experiences Of Teachers And Students, Margery Gardner
Understanding Integrated Stem Science Instruction Through The Experiences Of Teachers And Students, Margery Gardner
Dissertations - ALL
Integrated STEM education comprises an exploration of the interconnections between science, technology, engineering and mathematics in order to reflect on how each discipline operates within real world contexts. Students benefit from the integrated STEM approach because it values students’ real-life experiences and hands-on applications that mirror professional STEM work. However, Integrated STEM instruction remains ill defined, with many gaps in the existing research. The school setting central to this study was a suburban public middle school with a nationally recognized integrated STEM program. Through the use of hermeneutic phenomenological inquiry, I focused on both teachers’ and students’ experiences of participation …

In this paper, we describe the need for and development of an introductory cyber security course. The course was designed for non-technical majors with the goal of increasing cyber security hygiene for an important segment of the population—college undergraduates. While the need for degree programs that focus on educating and training individuals for occupations in the ever-growing cyber security field is critically important, the need for improved cyber security hygiene from the average everyday person is of equal importance. This paper discusses the approach used, curriculum developed, results from two runs of the course, and frames the overall structure of …

Trafficking Victims In The Emergency Room Setting, Lisa M. Archer
Trafficking Victims In The Emergency Room Setting, Lisa M. Archer
Theses and Graduate Projects
Human trafficking, a form of modern-day slavery, is a violation of human rights and a public health issue. Affecting millions worldwide, a high prevalence of human trafficking exists in the United States (US). Traffickers target vulnerable victims in an effort, through coercion and exploitation, to benefit financially, perpetuating the issue of supply and demand. Lacking a specific demographic, traffickers opportunistically seek out victims, such as targeting runaway and homeless youth, those sold through poverty, or those surviving in conditions caused by natural disaster. Multidisciplinary health care staff are uniquely positioned to recognize, assess, and intervene when encountering victims who seek …
