Utilization Of Puppetry As A Means Of Enhancing Communication Through Oral Language And Attention To Task., Ida Marlene Cary Adams
Student Work
In order for children to effectively participate in learning, their attention must be acquired and maintained. Teachers need to evaluate as many alternative educational means as possible to accomplish this result. The knowledge and encouragement of communication are also of paramount importance in the classroom. Puppets can be viewed as one audio-visual method for effectively progressing toward these goals. It has been suggested that puppets are capable of commanding attention and promoting communication through, not only their versatility, but also their ability to cross age and racial barriers. Thus, puppetry has .been viewed as a communicative tool throughout history.

The Relationship Between Early Reading And The Use Of Higher Level Thinking Skills, Carolyn Jean Church
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A study to investigate the effects of early reading ability, IQ, gender, and socioeconomic status on the use of higher level thinking skills in response to literature was conducted with 60 first-grade children. Thirty children reading at 2.5 grade equivalency or above as measured on the Metropolitan Achievement Tests Primer Form JS upon entrance to first grade were paired with 30 non-early readers on gender, IQ, and chronological age. A Thinking Skills Response Form, consisting of six questions formulated based on Bloom's Taxonomy at one of the three higher levels (analysis, synthesis, or evaluation), was developed using two children's books. …

A Music Curriculum For The Non-Music Major Teacher Of The Intermediate Grades, Donita Baham Burke
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study was developed for the teacher who may have limited resources in music education. The purpose of this study was to design a curriculum in music education for the intermediate grades so that a non-music major teacher could easily instruct music lessons. The characteristics of musical growth have been outlined and research has been shown to support the musical characteristics. A set of objectives has been formed as the foundation for teaching music to children of the intermediate grades. The curriculum devised has three components for the teacher to follow: songs appropriate for each season, holiday or month, listening …
The Academic Achievement Of Chinese-American Fluent English Proficient And Non-Minority Background Intermediate Grade Students (Bilingual, Asian-American), Edmund W. Lee
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
More than a decade has passed since the United States Supreme Court made its historic decision in Lau v. Nichols on January 21, 1974. Ruling in favor of the non-English-speaking Chinese plaintiffs, the Court upheld earlier guidelines established by the office for Civil Rights for school districts with more than five percent national origin-minority group children. In delivering the Court's opinion, Justice Douglas reiterated these words of J. Stanley Pottinger, former director of OCR:

An Examination Of Sense Of Story In Proficient Bilingual, Partial Bilingual, And Monolingual Children As Evidenced In Stories Told In English, Kathleen Kenfield
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to determine what differences, if any, existed among monolingual (English) children, partial bilingual (English-Spanish) children, and proficient bilingual (English-Spanish) children in the level of sophistication of their sense of story. Sense of story was defined as the degree to which one has internalized the features, conventions, and structures of the story genre. Sense of story was analyzed in three areas: structural complexity (number of words, number of T-units, mean length of T-units, number of characters, number of incidents), story convention usage (use of past tense, formal beginning, formal ending, use of quoted and described …

An Investigation Of The "Cume Assessment," An Instrument Designed To Measure Third Grade Children's Understanding Of Selected Cross-Cultural/Multicultural Concepts, Doni Kwolek Kobus
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Purpose. The purpose of this study was to investigate an instrument, the Cross-cultural Understandings in Multicultural Education (CUME) Assessment, which was devised to measure third grade students' understandings of selected crosscultural/ multicultural concepts. These concepts were derived from a cultural anthropological perspective of human similarities and differences.
Procedures. The study examined the reliability and validity of the CUME Assessment, a multiple-choice, domain referenced test consisting of twenty-one items based on seven instructional objectives. Third grade students, whose teachers indicated on a Teacher Questionnaire having taught these objectives as a part of the formal curriculum, were assessed. Three instruments were administered …

Patterns Of Control In Rural Alaska Education, Gerald A. Mcbeath, Judith Kleinfield, G. Williamson Mcdiarmid, E. Dean Coon, Carl. E. Shepro
ISER Reports
A 3-year study of decentralization of Alaska schools identified several factors that influenced whether a school, was locally controlled and found patterns of control associated, in important ways with staff and community attitudes toward school. Information was gathered by surveys and interviews conducted in 28 communities randomly selected to represent all rural Alaska schools. Analysis of patterns of control showed 24% of rural Alaska schools with regionalized control, 40% with localized control, and 36% with "mixed" control. Field studies suggested that the attitudes and values of district superintendents were a major factor in decentralization. Localization of control was also dependent …
Competency Based Training To Facilitate Improved Quality Interaction Between Parents And Their Handicapped Infants And Preschoolers, Jeanette A. Lengemann
Competency Based Training To Facilitate Improved Quality Interaction Between Parents And Their Handicapped Infants And Preschoolers, Jeanette A. Lengemann
Student Work
A widely accepted characteristic of early intervention programs for handicapped infants and young children is the active involvement of the child's parents. Although the actual extent of parental involvement varies with programs, typically parents are assuming the role of instructor or presenter of developmentally based activities seeking to improve the skill levels of their developmentally delayed children. Simeonsson, Cooper and Scheiner, (1932) reviewed 27 programs focusing on intervention with "biologically impaired" infants and young children. Seventy percent of those programs specified a role for parents within the intervention for their children. The value of parent involvement is thought to be …

Governing Schools In Culturally Different Communities: Effects Of Decentralization In Rural Alaska, Oliver Scott Goldsmith, G. Williamson Mcdiarmid
ISER Reports
Decentralized in 1976, rural Alaska's schools today experience varying levels of lay control. What factors condition lay participation in and influence on school governance? This study examines two factors: the type of governance issue; and the type of community. The hypotheses tested are: professional dominance is greatest on issues considered to be internal to the expertise of professionals; and lay influence will be greatest in small, remote and ethnically homogenous communities. Data used to test these hypotheses are taken from a 1981 survey of rural principals (N = 304) and a 1982 survey of rural teachers (N = 304). Informants …

This instructional manual includes hundreds of short, accessible explanations of the philosophical ideas and issues written into HARRY the novel, and as such is a valuable introduction to philosophy. Adults with no experience in academic philosophy will have no trouble using this manual to engage young people in philosophical dialogue. The manual provides discussion plans and exercises to help the students think for themselves about the philosophical ideas most relevant to their experience. The manual is also a primer in critical thinking and formal and informal logic, which are treated as helpful tools for inquiry. Students will find the logic …

A Curriculum Guide Based On Developmental Stages Of Kindergarten And First Grade Writing, Heidi E. Borrud
All Graduate Projects
The relationship between the developmental stages of a child and the acquisition of written language was studied. Through research, developmental stages were identified. The stages were used to develop objectives for a kindergarten and first grade writing curriculum guide. Activities that would aid in the achievement of the given objectives are suggested.
