Ain't Misbehavin' : A Study Of Teacher Misbehaviors, Related Communication Behaviors, And Student Resistance, Danielle J. Dolin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This examined teacher misbehaviors' relationships to student cognitive and affective learning, student liking of the instructor, and student resistance. Socio-communicative style, nonverbal immediacy, and behaviors characteristic of communication anxiety were examined as possible predictors of learning, liking, and misbehaviors. Factor structures of the resistance behaviors and of the teacher misbehaviors were explored. Data were collected both at the beginning of a semester and at the end of a semester survey. Results suggest consistency with previous models. Responsiveness, nonverbal immediacy. and teacher misbehaviors all contribute a significant amount of variance to learning. New dimensions for the teacher misbehavior and student resistance …

The questions addressed within the study involved determining the specific experiences of classroom teachers of the phenomenon of …

The Development Of Appropriate And Helpful Teaching Methods As Applied To Distance Learning, John M. Watford Jan 1995

The Development Of Appropriate And Helpful Teaching Methods As Applied To Distance Learning, John M. Watford

Theses and Dissertations

Advanced technology has provided numerous opportunities for broadening education and it's purposes. One type of technology particularly influential involves communications equipment whereby students at different physical locations may be brought together interactively, by both audio and video, to achieve the learning process. This type of technology has come to be known as distance learning. Although many uses of the term, "distance learning", refer to class room delivery that is not interactive, the purpose here is to discuss an environment where teacher and students at remote locations can truly collaborate as if the physical separation does not exist. Other terms, such …

A Cross-Case Analysis Of Middle School Reading Teachers' Theoretical Orientations As They Relate To Classroom Practices., Shirley Theriot Fogleman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Each interaction between teachers and students is a reflection of the theory that these professionals, sometimes unknowingly, posit about what should be occurring in their classrooms. The purpose of this study is to explore the differences between middle school language arts teachers' beliefs about how children actually read a text, and how these teachers translate these beliefs into classroom practices. The beliefs we hold about reading comprehension are essential to our understanding about how we should instruct and assess our students in our classes. Leu and Kinzer (1988) refer to two beliefs' frameworks of comprehension in reading, based on the …

Linguistic And Cultural Immersion And Second Language Acquisition: International Young Student Exchange., Rosita Mira Maristany Jan 1995

Linguistic And Cultural Immersion And Second Language Acquisition: International Young Student Exchange., Rosita Mira Maristany

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The trend in foreign language learning reflects a move from "fragmented" language to "whole" language (Rigg 1991). It includes the individual as well as the social aspect of language acquisition; and the integration of language and culture. Student international exchange programs provide the ideal atmosphere for "whole" language learning and the integration of language and culture in total language and cultural immersion. Most research in international student exchange programs described the organization of the program or addressed a particular variable. There is a need for integrative "whole" research rather than "fragmented" research. The method chosen as most appropriate for this …

Paired Reading : An Investigation Into Using Parents As Tutors In One Mainstream High School, Miguel R. Fernandez

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Contemporary research on reading has investigated the use of parents and peer tutors in assisting schools to improve reading accuracy and comprehension. Some of the techniques that have been used are Hearing Reading, Paired Reading, Shared Reading, Relaxed Reading, Pause, Prompt and Praise and Direct Instruction. Of these techniques, Direct Instruction and Paired Reading have been shown to be the most effective programs using parents within the primary school setting. However, many studies in Paired Reading research have lacked experimental data using parents as tutors in high schools. The aim of this paper was to assess the impact of Paired …

The Journey Of Making Meaning In Drama : A Case Study In A Metropolitan Priority School, Heather A. Timms Jan 1995

The Journey Of Making Meaning In Drama : A Case Study In A Metropolitan Priority School, Heather A. Timms

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Children with a low socio-economic background frequently fail within our schools. The school milieu is a potential contributor to this scenario, as schools are generally designed for the attributes, needs, and skill levels that are characteristic of middle• class children. It is therefore important to explore alternative learning frameworks that will enable these children to function within the school system. Drama offers unique and exciting possibilities in this field. Previous research endorses the use of drama in education for this specific purpose; and the theories propounded by learning and language theorists and drama educationalists provide a strong theoretical framework.

Impediments To The Cultivation Of The Folk School Spirit In A North American Context: The Case Of Grand View College, Dennis Bielfeldt

The Bridge

In the 1995-96 academic year Grand View College will

celebrate its first hundred years of life. In anticipation of

this milestone, suggestions have been made to designate

1994-95 the "Year of Grundtvig," and to formally observe

with the entire Grand View community the influence of

the great Dane upon the college and its educational philosophy.

What, after all, could be more fitting for a college

whose most recent Academic Mission Statement proudly

declares its founding "by Danish immigrants who sought

to give the educational vision and ideals of N.F.S.

Grundtvig an institutional presence?"

Computer-Aided Composition Instruction In Florida's Community Colleges, Elaine W. Kromhout

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Ubiquitous incorporation of computer-based, electronic technologies into American society has created intense pressure upon the composition instructors at Florida's community colleges to develop computer skills themselves and to develop curricula which routinely incorporate these technologies into their teaching responsibilities. This fact makes clear the need to assess instructors' readiness: What computer skills have they acquired and what computer-aided teaching methodologies have they learned which make them capable of and willing to teach composition with the aid of computers? What support services on community college campuses seem to encourage instructors to take on the responsibility to teach computer-aided composition. After its …
