A qualitative study of these narrators, who contributed both traditional stories and personal narratives, extended from February 1991 until February 1996 in Belize's Toledo District. Featured narrators were interviewed and audio-taped by the author throughout this time period, as they contributed their oral lore to the project.

This investigation reveals the complex interrelationships of anthropological salvage and cultural renewal. Certain contemporary scholars decry what they perceive as the limited pastoral dimension of salvage, which may suggest that the true value of traditional stories lies …

Using African American Perspectives To Promote A More Inclusive Understanding Of Human Communication Theory, Jim Schnell Jan 1996

Using African American Perspectives To Promote A More Inclusive Understanding Of Human Communication Theory, Jim Schnell

Ethnic Studies Review

This article addresses the use of African American Perspectives as a means of promoting a more inclusive understanding of human communication theory. It describes contributions by African American scholars as they relate to providing a framework for inclusion of other under-represented cultures in U.S. society (i.e. Asian American, Latin American, etc.). This objective is becoming more and more relevant because of the increased percentage of U.S. citizens who are of non-European origin. Common sense supports the position that an inclusive curriculum, representative of the many cultural groups that compose the U.S., will appeal to the diverse audience educated in the …

Honors Capstones

The Teacher Education Program at Northern Illinois University is typically divided into two sections: the methods courses/teacher preparation semesters, and the actual sixteen-week student teaching experience. This unintentional separation often leaves the students in the prepatory semesters apprehensive about what is actually going to ,happen when they are student teaching. The student teachers themselves also feel somewhat alienated from the program due to being off-campus. This research project presents a model of how to connect the two divided segments of the Elementary Education program through telecommunications. Students from CIEE 344 were used to complete the model. These pre-semester students searched …

The problem of competing policies in the health care arena represents one of the most formidable obstacles for undocumented persons. These conflicting conditions are such that some services …
