(1977) Philosophy In The Classroom: A Response To Wilson, Levinson And Moore, Philip C. Guin
(1977) Philosophy In The Classroom: A Response To Wilson, Levinson And Moore, Philip C. Guin
Collected Papers of Philip C. Guin
In response to reviews of Philosophy in the Classroom (Matthew Lipman, Ann Margaret Sharp, and Frederick S. Oscanyan, 1977) by John Wilson, Daniel Levinson, and J.T. Moore (Teaching Philosophy 2(3/4): 392-395, attached here) Guin notes that the book was written for teachers, prospective teachers, administrators, and others preparing to implement an elementary program in philosophy without previous training in logic, epistemology, or ethics, and that the author’s claims are not speculative, but reflect documented achievements. He argues that the book is well-suited for teachers anxious to learn how to get at the ideas embedded in a philosophical novel, how …

Talking With Children, Brian Lever
Talking With Children, Brian Lever
Research outputs pre 2011
This book is a collection of interviews with children. It is intended to give the reader a glimpse of some of the ways in which children think about things. Some of the interviews are almost whimsical. Others are quite serious.
The interviews were conducted by a group of twenty student teachers during their last term of teacher training. This group of student teachers were but a small part of a much larger group of students all of whom had been given the task of interviewing a child. The purpose of the task was partly to give the students an opportunity …

A music drama in three acts, for Junior Primary School children. The story is based on the Ramayana saga, as told by Joanna Troughton in her book The Story of Rama and Sita. The words of the drama have been drawn from discussions with the children, and wherever possible the children's own words have been used.
Students from Churchlands College of Advanced Education were involved in the development of the drama, and in planning and conducting preparatory experiences for and with the children.

Language Problems And Aboriginal Education, Ed Brumby (Ed.)
Language Problems And Aboriginal Education, Ed Brumby (Ed.)
Research outputs pre 2011
Effective communication must be an essential feature of any teaching/ .learning situation and it follows that considerable difficulties arise when teacher and learner speak different and mutually unintelligible languages or dialects. This, unfortunately, is the situation in which many, if not most, Aboriginal children and their teachers throughout Australia find themselves. This classroom situation reflects, of course, the difficulties and frustrations experienced on a wider scale by many Aboriginal parents and Aboriginal communities, and those outsiders who work with them. The problem is compounded further by the fact that few teachers or others who work in Aboriginal areas are given …
Causes Of Low Enrollment Of Black Students In Upper-Level Science Courses, Henry L. Jenkins
Causes Of Low Enrollment Of Black Students In Upper-Level Science Courses, Henry L. Jenkins
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
For approximately seven years, the number of Black students enrolled in upper-level science courses (e.g., Chemistry, Human Physiology, Physics) is proportionately lower than the number of non-Black students a.t Palatka South High School, Palatka, Florida.
On the surface, this low enrollment appears to coincide with the fact that there are more non-Black students than Black students enrolled in the school. However, if one were to examine closely the total number of Black students enrolled in upperlevel science courses from the school's total Black student population enrolled in science classes, and compare it to the school's total non-Black population enrolled in …

The Effects Of Counseling Involvement On Elementary School Student Behavior., Rosanne Marie Perry
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of varying degrees of involvement in the therapeutic process. The sample of this field study was comprised of those clients involved in a county mental health linked program administered by a private agency. The target population was kindergarten, first and second grade students in selected county schools. Having been referred by their teachers, each child was then treated by a counselor who provided individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, and/or consultation. If it seemed appropriate, in-class tutoring or compensatory classes were offered for the child. The two experimental groups were …

(1976) The Teacher As Liberator: A Nietzschean View, Ann Margaret Sharp
Collected Papers of Ann Margaret Sharp
It is Nietzsche's view that it is the main task of the educator to reach out for the student and to become his agent of liberation, aware that the end result will inevitably be the creation of men who will come into conflict with the prevailing norms of society and who will begin the process of the creation of new values for mankind. In order for this value-creator to become a reality, educators must will his existence consciously and then set about systematically to form him.

The research undertaken fer this study utilized thirty-nine, Black, seventh grade students who were underachieving in reading. These subjects were randomly assigned to two experimental groups and two control groups.
The analysis of covariance procedures were used to measure gains in vocabulary achievement, comprehension achievement, and total …
Parental Attitudes Toward Their Retarded Child, Barbara Burman Bronston
Parental Attitudes Toward Their Retarded Child, Barbara Burman Bronston
Student Work
The attitudes parents have towards their retarded child are formed by many people. Previous contact and knowledge about mental retardation is one. The others are, contacts with the medical profession, reactions from other family members, and how the community supports and helps this group of people. Guilt and anger that parents have also contribute to their attitudes. In many cases the parents will feel a groundless personal guilt. (World Health Organization, 1954).
