Development Of The Differentiated Instruction Assessment, Bonnia Cook Fouts
Development Of The Differentiated Instruction Assessment, Bonnia Cook Fouts
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this work was to develop a reliable and valid instrument for assessing what educators know in order to implement effective differentiated instruction (DI). Construction of the Differentiated Instruction Assessment involved five steps: (a) a list of potential items was composed via the domain-sampling theory of instrument development based on a content analysis of relevant literature, (b) three expert participants on DI completed a retranslation task on the list of potential items, (c) a second retranslation task was conducted on a group of four different expert participants, (d) a test-retest analysis was conducted, and (e) data were collected …

The Portrayal Of Force, Fraud, And Coercion Within Northern Ohio Federal Sex Trafficking Trials -- 2010-2013, Jesse E. Bach
ETD Archive
Human trafficking is often considered to be one of the three largest criminal enterprises worldwide, ranking beside the sale of illegal drugs and illicit firearms (Bales, 2004, 2007 Bales & Doodalter, 2009 Hussein, 2011 Schauer & Wheaton, 2006 Skinner, 2008). National estimates suggest that 100,000-300,000 American, school-aged children are at-risk for sex trafficking (Department of Homeland Security, 2014) while there is only a one percent arrest and conviction record for traffickers (Bales, 2007). This dissertation explored the portrayal of force, fraud, and coercion within federal domestic minor sex trafficking (DMST) trials of Northern Ohio from 2010-2013 so as to gain …

Just A Stage: An Ethnography Of Booker High School’S Visual And Performing Arts Magnet Program, Chelsea Driver
Just A Stage: An Ethnography Of Booker High School’S Visual And Performing Arts Magnet Program, Chelsea Driver
Theses & ETDs
My ethnographic research was conducted at the Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) magnet program at Booker High School in Sarasota, Florida in the 2014-2015 school year. Booker was historically an all black neighborhood school and in 1979 the VPA was employed as a strategy for integrating the study body. I explore this complicated history of the VPA’s position within Booker and pursue a more nuanced understanding of how the program serves the student body today. Engaging with the history of school choice policy, I explore how the choice to be involved in this intensive program has particular meanings for its …
The Effects Of Brief Diversity Immersion Programs On College Student Participants, Paul W. Krikau
The Effects Of Brief Diversity Immersion Programs On College Student Participants, Paul W. Krikau
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Brief diversity Education immersion (BDEI) programs are commonly held on college and university campuses to educate students about systemic oppression and privilege, particularly as applied to social identities such as race, gender, sexuality, and religion. Theory suggests that learning about privilege-oppression dynamics is affected by attitudes about difference. The present study sought to discover if these programs are effective in changing attitudes about diversity and privilege and oppression systems. Further, the current research sought to discover if social identity affected any change in scores. This study found a significant, small effect size change in attitudes for all participants. It, however, …

Educating Pastoralists And Extension Officers On Diverse Livestock Diseases In A Changing Environment In Tanzania, Christopher Gustafson, Elizabeth Vanwormer, Rudovick Kazwala, Asha Makweta, Goodluck Paul, Woutrina Smith, Jonna A. K. Mazet
Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
East African pastoralists and their livestock are vulnerable to alterations in resource availability and disease transmission and frequently face poor access to livestock health services. Government veterinarians tasked with guiding health services must prioritize livestock health risks and allocate limited resources across disparate ecosystems with different disease threats. To identify livestock diseases of concern and strategies for improving herd health and resilience, we conducted community focus groups with pastoralists and interviewed pastoralist household leaders, village extension officers, and government veterinary officials in south-central Tanzania, an area experiencing rapid population growth and environmental change. All participants discussed pastoralist access to livestock …

Diabetes Education Tailored Towards English Speaking Caribbean Immigrants, Joanna A. Dunk
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The prevalence of diabetes is increasing among persons of Caribbean ancestry in the United States, yet there is little research on the differences in the health and nutrition patterns of diabetics from this population. This study created a culturally-sensitive diabetes education program for the staff of an internal medicine practice that treated patients from the English-speaking Caribbean. The project was guided by the health belief model, as well as Leininger's theory of transcultural nursing. Methodology of project had a quality improvement focus. The comprehensive curriculum included diabetes medications, physical activity, culturally-tailored medical nutrition therapy, complications, self-care behavior, problem solving, and …

The Effectiveness Of Teaching Methods In Traditional Amish Schoolhouses In Lawrence County, Tn, Ann Marie Paley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Amish community at Ethridge in Lawrence County, Tennessee is one of a handful in Tennessee, and, with a population of 1,500 and more than ten church districts, is the largest in the South and one of the top 20 in the nation. This particular Amish community was colonized when three families led by Dan Yoder, Joe Yoder, and Joseph Gingerich moved to the area from Ohio in the mid-1940s due to problems with the establishment of their own schools. Swartzentruber Amish are a subgroup within Old Order Amish society and occupy a distinct place on the conservative end of …

Role Of School Culture In Remediating Unsatisfactory Teachers, Michele Lindenmeyer
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this study was to report the evaluator's perceived influence of culture on teacher remediation. Qualitative insight is provided through reports of what teacher remediation looks like in schools, what cultural influences are revealed, and what outcomes might be attributed to school culture. Quantitative data is provided in the form of a school culture survey that provides information about values, beliefs, and behaviors related to relationships in schools. Administrators need more training and support in providing formative feedback to teachers to lead improvement in instruction (Bridges, 1984). Remediation appears to be a last attempt in bringing extreme situations …
Empowerment Unit Plan For Haitian Restavek Children, Ashley Craig
Empowerment Unit Plan For Haitian Restavek Children, Ashley Craig
HIM 1990-2015
Restavek, French for "one who stays with", is a word used to describe child slaves in Haiti. These children are given away by their parents at a young age because of financial hardships or for hopes of life in the urban areas to be better than life in the rural areas. The Restaveks, far from their family and anyone they know, end up as slaves without access to education, healthcare, and sometimes food. As a result, many of these children suffer from malnutrition, abuse, and illnesses. The majority of Restaveks are young girls. In the communities, they are shunned and …

American Sign Language (ASL) is a manual language used by many deaf people in the United States and Canada. For much of its existence, ASL was believed to be a system of rudimentary gestures and signs based on the English language. However, studies that analyzed the linguistic properties of this signed ‘mode’ (Stokoe, 1960) legitimized that it was a language independent of spoken language, with its own system of principles and elements to construct meaningful utterances. Like any language, ASL is influenced by the social demographics of its users. Social demographics such as ethnicity, geographic location, age, gender, and socioeconomic …
Education As Regime Change In Aristotle's Politics, William J. Nunnally
Education As Regime Change In Aristotle's Politics, William J. Nunnally
Master's Theses and Capstones
Aristotle’s Politics is a study of political science, established by Aristotle as the practical science of all things related to the polis, the highest human community, with the purpose of securing and promoting the good life, that of noble action and happiness, for its citizens. Aristotle observes that the political communities in existence around him all fall short of this lofty goal, and much of the Politics and subsequent commentary on the Politics is an attempt to establish what type of regime is best able to achieve this highest end of the polis. This paper argues that the relationship between …

Dental Hygiene Faculty Publications
Purpose: Mass fatality incidents can overwhelm local, state and national resources quickly. Dental hygienists are widely distributed and have the potential to increase response teams' capacity. However, appropriate training is required. The literature is void of addressing this type of training for dental hygienists and scant in dentistry. Hence, the purpose of this study was to assess one facet of such training: Whether the use of multimedia is likely to enhance educational outcomes related to mass fatality training.
Methods: A randomized, double-blind, pre- and post-test design was used to evaluate the effectiveness of comparable educational modules for 2 groups: a …
Produce & Achieve: A Case Study Of Inner-City Education, Daryl A. Tate
Produce & Achieve: A Case Study Of Inner-City Education, Daryl A. Tate
Theses and Dissertations
Despite efforts at narrowing the achievement gap, ethnicity-based disparities in achievement are an enduring and pervasive issue in American education. Holy Angels, a high achieving, African American, urban, elementary school in Chicago, Illinois offers a model for successful education of ethnic minority children. Despite coming from predominantly welfare supported, single-mother homes, located in crime ridden inner-city Chicago, during the period bounded by this study, Holy Angels’ students produced test scores among the highest in the nation. Previous research indicates that characteristics of schools that support academic achievement particularly among ethnic minority students are high teacher expectations, academic emphasis, and culturally …

Students And Faculty Indivisible: Crafting A Higher Education Culture Of Flourishing, Eileen K. Camfield
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is comprised of three separate articles addressing related issues central to the culture and future of higher education. The questions that animate the investigations are: In what ways is writing self-efficacy forged in the learning relationships between student and instructor? In what ways, if any, do traditional assessment practices impact student development? In what ways, if any, does institutional culture shape faculty identity, and what is gained or lost in the process? These queries stem from concerns about possible disconnects between visions of higher education's potential and actual practices in the classroom. The dissertation uses grounded theory to …

"Law Is Coercion": Revisiting Judicial Power To Provide Equality In Public Education, José F. Anderson
All Faculty Scholarship
This article is an attempt to start a conversation about where we find ourselves in the plight to help our most challenged public schools. It is not intended to be a comprehensive solution to the problem, but rather a hard look at how, after decades of many efforts, we are further away from the equal education contemplated by the United States Supreme Court's historic decision in Brown v. Board of Education. This article does not desire to simply cast blame for the failures of our children, but to send a reminder that, as Frederick Douglass would say, we can hardly …
In Defence Of The Lecture, R. Scott Webster
In Defence Of The Lecture, R. Scott Webster
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
In response to the lecture format coming under ‘attack’ and being replaced by online materials and smaller tutorials, this paper attempts to offer not only a defence but also to assert that the potential value of the lecture is difficult to replicate through other learning formats. In this paper some of the criticisms against lectures will be challenged, in particular that they are monological and promote a banking concept to learning. To make this argument I shall be drawing upon Freire’s ‘banking concept’ and Vygotsky’s notion of ‘inner speech’ and shall claim that listening is a virtue to be encouraged …

A Muslim should be encouraged to comprehend the benefit
and value behind every aspect of Islamic practice and wisdom,
and not just practice their religion because they were told to do
so. The products proposed in this thesis aim to achieve this by
inviting and encouraging a Muslim to practice The Five Pillars
of Islam while comprehending their value through the use of
modern means such as Arduino technology, 3D printing and
visual computing programing.
I am provoked by the fact that the circle of Gulf-region Muslims
I’m surrounded by, and have been exposed to since childhood,

[Introduction To] Posthumanism And Educational Research, Nathan Snaza, John A. Weaver
Bookshelf
Focusing on the interdependence between human, animal, and machine, posthumanism redefines the meaning of the human being previously assumed in knowledge production. This movement challenges some of the most foundational concepts in educational theory and has implications within educational research, curriculum design and pedagogical interactions. In this volume, a group of international contributors use posthumanist theory to present new modes of institutional collaboration and pedagogical practice. They position posthumanism as a comprehensive theoretical project with connections to philosophy, animal studies, environmentalism, feminism, biology, queer theory and cognition. Researchers and scholars in curriculum studies and philosophy of education will benefit from …

My Classroom Management Plan: The First Two Weeks Of School, Hannah Burkhart
Honors Projects
As a pre-service teacher in one of the best teacher preparatory programs in the country, I learned many of the theories behind classroom management and discipline. After spending time during student teaching in my own classroom, however, I needed a more immediately useful solution than theory could provide. After investigating varied classroom management approaches and styles, I discovered the work of Harry and Rosemary Wong who inspired the creation of my own classroom management plan: a step-by-step guide of best practices and approaches to respond to daily issues and routines in the classroom. While I have heard that “the best …

The Effects Of Gamifying Optional Lessons On Motivation, Aaron Zemach
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Adding video-game elements to non-video-game interfaces (“gamification”) has become a common engagement strategy over the past several years in the domain of education. While prior studies have found that adding game elements to mandatory educational materials can increase students’ motivation to complete the materials, there has yet to be a study to investigate if game elements can make users more likely to engage with optional educational materials. In this study, we investigate whether users of a gamified educational interface are more motivated than users of a non-gamified interface to voluntarily complete educational materials. We found users of a gamified interface …

The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of an educational program on the utilization of native plants in farming and health practices among rural farmers in Ghana. The research objectives were to describe the population, assess farmers’ knowledge of farming and health practices, describe participants’ current and planned behavior, and observe the implementation of the practices taught. Results indicated participants’ knowledge of farming and health practices increased after the workshops. Results also indicated …
Propaedeutic To Philosophy: Dialogue And Truth In Philosophical Practice, Lauren Nelson Hesse
Propaedeutic To Philosophy: Dialogue And Truth In Philosophical Practice, Lauren Nelson Hesse
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation advocates a model of dialogue as an approach to education and to philosophical discourse itself that is capable of acknowledging and accommodating the manifold possibilities for human thought. Contemporary philosophy is permeated by a loss of certainty and the increasingly problematic nature of the concept of truth, and the complication of these concepts exposes significant limitations in the ways we conceptualize thought itself. Working in this vein, Gilles Deleuze identifies what he calls an " image of thought," which characterizes the forms we have traditionally allowed thinking to take. His critique of this image, along with its subsequent …

At present, we know very little about the transition from traditional learning skills to models of standardized learning, and how it can influence the way one understands and solves problems. This research will examine cognitive performance and the factors affecting variation across communities and between individuals as it changes with age. The objective of this dissertation is to measure cognitive performance among children between 8 and 18 years of age exposed to variable levels of formal schooling in order to investigate three main research questions: (1) Whether exposure to schooling and increased performance in school-based abilities, such as math and …

Opportunity And Access: High School Coursework And Its Impact On Student Self-Perceptions, Cassie K. Ferguson
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
The skills taught and the courses offered to the United States’ public high school students have changed drastically over the past 20 years. Career-based electives have given way to college preparatory classes. Gone are the auto shops, construction and home economics classes—courses that many view as outdated, dangerous or unnecessary at the high school level. Arts and humanities-based courses have also disappeared; even courses that can train students to enter the robust fields of healthcare or technology are diminishing (Dare, 2006).
The communities in which many of these courses are disappearing are often diverse and economically disadvantaged. This “second-generation segregation” …
