Foraging Ecology Of Temperate-Zone And Tropical Woodpeckers, Robert A. Askins
Foraging Ecology Of Temperate-Zone And Tropical Woodpeckers, Robert A. Askins
Biology Faculty Publications
The foraging behavior of 11 species of woodpeckers in Guatemala, Maryland, and Minnesota was studied in order to test the seasonal stability hypothesis. This hypothesis predicts that specialization and species richness should be no greater for tropical wood-excavators than for those in the temperate zone because wood-excavators in both regions are buffered against seasonal change. Niche breadth values for six variables that describe foraging methods and perches were calculated by two methods. Unweighted niche breadth values were similar for tropical and temperate woodpeckers for all variables except foraging techniques; in this case the temperate species are more specialized. With weighted …

The Distribution, Ecology And Growth Of The Chestnut Lamprey, Ichthyomyzon Castaneus, In The Clearwater River, Minnesota, Charles S. Holt, Paul A. Durkee
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
This study dealt primarily with the ammocoete stage of the chestnut lamprey, lchthyamyzan castaneus (Girard). The population estimate for ammocoetes in the 25.5 m2 section studied was 540 individuals. The lengths of 452 ammocoetes collected ranged from 42 to 164 mm. A total of 213 chestnut lampreys were retained for laboratory study. Twenty of these were adults with an average length of 136.8 mm (range= 125 mm to 191 mm). Six age classes of ammocoetes were determined. An average increase in body length of recaptured ammocoetes of 2.9 mm was observed during the summers of 1980 and 1981. The habitat …
Male And Female Strategies For Reproduction In Lesser Scaup (Forced Copulation, Parental Investment, Manitoba, Canada), Alan Daynne Afton
Male And Female Strategies For Reproduction In Lesser Scaup (Forced Copulation, Parental Investment, Manitoba, Canada), Alan Daynne Afton
Theses and Dissertations
I studied the reproductive behavior and performance of a marked population of lesser scaup (Aythya affinis) near Erickson, Manitoba from 1977 to 1980. The dissertation is comprised of 3 parts: (1) influence of age and time on female reproductive performance, (2) forced copulation as a male reproductive strategy, and (3) parental time investment by brood hens.Arrival date and length of prelaying period varied among years, but were not related to female age. Rate of nonbreeding and nest initiation date varied among years and by female age. Age variation in nonbreeding was due to failure of yearlings and a few 2-year-olds …

A Taxonomic And Ecologic Study Of The Riverbottom Forest On St. Mary River, Lee Creek And Belly River In Southwest Alberta, Canada, Robert Keith Shaw
Theses and Dissertations
The riverbottom forest community of St. Mary River, Lee Creek and Belly River in southwest Alberta, Canada is a unique ecological entity characterized by poplar species having their major Alberta distribution along these streams. Stands in the community are dominated by three tree species, six shrub species and nine herb species. Establishment of the community is dependent on climate and substrate; destruction is the result of progressive lateral stream-flow erosion. Soils are sandy loams above gravel, with pH values of 7.7 to 8.0 and soluble salt concentration of 176 to 458 parts per million. Trees in mature stands averaged 23.0 …

A Preliminary Ecological Study Of Areas To Be Impounded In The Salt River Basin Of Kentucky, Louis A. Krumholz
KWRRI Research Reports
This report covers work that is an extension of Project No. A-019-KY. A series of 25 sampling stations was established in the mainstream and tributaries of the Salt River that extend from the source of the stream in Boyle County to a few miles below the site of Taylorsville Darn in Spencer County. Sampling for water chemistry and biota was carried out semimonthly. Data on temperature, oxygen, depth, and discharge, along with analyses for cations (Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn) and anions (PO4, NO3, NO2, CO3, HCO3) have been accumulated and …
Ecological Study Of The Effects Of Strip Mining On The Microbiology Of Streams, Ralph H. Weaver, Harry D. Nash
Ecological Study Of The Effects Of Strip Mining On The Microbiology Of Streams, Ralph H. Weaver, Harry D. Nash
KWRRI Research Reports
The microflora of Cane Branch of Beaver Creek in McCreary County, Kentucky, which drains an area that was strip-mined between 1955 and 1959, was studied and compared with that of Helton Branch which drains a comparable area where there has been no mining. Differences include: the establishment of Ferrcbacillus ferrooxidans, for which procedures were developed for direct colony isolation from the stream; fewer saprophytic bacteria; more numerous and more diversified filamentous and unicellular fungi; and characteristic differences in algal flora. Representatives of 42 genera of filamentous fungi were identified. Of these, 21 were isolated only from Cane Branch. Representatives of …

Snails On A Persian Hillside: Ecology-Prehistory-Gastronomy, Charles A. Reed
Snails On A Persian Hillside: Ecology-Prehistory-Gastronomy, Charles A. Reed
Postilla
The archeologist who is prehistorian may expect snail shells in his excavations. Sometimes, even though the site may be far from the nearest seas, such shells are marine and often were used as decorations, indicating the continuity of human vanity through the ages. Generally, the archeologist has had little interest in such shells as snails, or even in the generic and specific identifications furnished him by a malacologist; instead, the archeologist is interested in any cultural uses of the shells, and is intrigued by problems of their geographic origin and the possibility of tracing prehistoric trade routes. However, to the …
An Ecological Study Of The Second Ward Of Omaha, James R. Mead
An Ecological Study Of The Second Ward Of Omaha, James R. Mead
Student Work
An ecological study relating to sociology involves the spatial, selective and distributive functions and relations of human beings in a given geographical and cultural area. These functions and relations characterize the forms and types of social interaction. The sociological concept of the term "ecology" has been borrowed from the students of botany and zoology. Ecology has been defined as "that phase of biology that considers plants and animals as they exist in nature, and studies their interdependence, and the relation of each kind and individual to its environment. This definition is not sufficiently comprehensive to include all the elements that …
An Ecological Study Of The Bacterial Flora Of Westhampton Lake, Thomas Constantine Mandes
An Ecological Study Of The Bacterial Flora Of Westhampton Lake, Thomas Constantine Mandes
Master's Theses
Most natural bodies of water which have been investigated have been shown to contain bacteria. Exceptions apparently occur where we find those waters which, due to their chemical constitution and physical makeup, are inimical even to the growth of bacteria .
Since bacteria are virtually ubiquitous in waters, it would necessarily follow that biologists interested in this aspect of biology would have intensively studied bacteria and the part they play in the biology of water. Quite the contrary; instead of the study continuing along lines laid down by early scholars it has shifted to a study of bacteria which were …
Range Land Of America And Some Research On Its Management, Laurence A. Stoddart
Range Land Of America And Some Research On Its Management, Laurence A. Stoddart
Faculty Honor Lectures
Although grazing of livestock has been a practice and a profession of man almost from his beginning only recently has range management reached anything approaching a pre~ cise science. Although ' trials and errors over the years brought to light much practical methodology for assuring high production from grazing land, still it remained for the plant physiologist and ecologist to find the whys and wherefores, and to advance new methods and new thoughts which promise to increase productivity still further and at the same time maintain the great range resource.
The peculiar land situation that marked America in her forma~ …
A Taxonomic And Ecological Study Of Acridinae Of Utah (Orthoptera-Locustidae), Herald C. Bennion
A Taxonomic And Ecological Study Of Acridinae Of Utah (Orthoptera-Locustidae), Herald C. Bennion
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Orthoptera, especially the family Locustidae, is one of the most important and most interesting orders of insects in the state of Utah. It includes a polyphagus group of great economic importance in the state. The topography and climate of Utah varies from forested alpine slopes to hot arid desert wastes, several life zones being represented. This great variation from desert to alpine in Utah presents a rather unique region for taxonomic and ecological studies of the Orthoptera.
The most familiar representatives of the insect order Orthoptera are the long-horned grasshoppers, locusts, crickets, katydids, and cockroaches. Orthoptera are characterized by Comstock …
An Ecological Study Of Ashland Park Community, Angeline Rose Tauchen
An Ecological Study Of Ashland Park Community, Angeline Rose Tauchen
Student Work
The purpose of an ecological study of a community is to bring out various phases of social life as they really exist, with reference to their interdependence upon environmental forces. Few comprehensive studies of the human community from the ecological viewpoint have been made; the field is practically unsurveyed. Human ecology shows a striking similarity to plant ecology in the effect of definite external processes upon life. Because of the bearing of many ecological factors upon the social life of Ashland Park Community, the district offers innumerable opportunities for research in this phase of sociology.
