Missional Communities: Why They Are Failing And How To Help Them Thrive, Matthew L. Murphy
Missional Communities: Why They Are Failing And How To Help Them Thrive, Matthew L. Murphy
Doctor of Ministry
Missional communities are failing. Missional communities are failing because they do not contextualize the nature, function, and historical forms of the church. Specifically, missional communities fail due to lack of leadership, gospel proclamation, incarnational living to a particular people, and mission dependence on the Holy Spirit. All of these things stem from not putting the nature, function, and historical forms of the church before modern forms.
Missional communities will begin to thrive if communities will not just copy forms of other missional churches, but if they will contextualize the nature, functions, and historical forms of the church in their own …
The Church Is Familial And Is Built On Spiritually Strong Families, Yat Lau
The Church Is Familial And Is Built On Spiritually Strong Families, Yat Lau
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Christ’s headship of the church has strong parallels to the husband’s headship of the family unit. As postmodernism, socio-economic factors, egalitarianism, globalization and shifts in the communicational processes drive inter-generational issues to greater heights, insidiously tear families apart—relationally, intellectually and spiritually. On the other hand, the church models the world through its discipleship programs, organization structures and has asserted itself as the spiritual head of the home. This paper will survey Christian young adults to identify key influences on their spiritual formation and family ministries the church provide to support families. The paper will provide a critique on family-equipping ministries …
A Discipleship Model For Youth At The Paradise Adventist Church, Milton Daniel Marquez
A Discipleship Model For Youth At The Paradise Adventist Church, Milton Daniel Marquez
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
For more than a decade the Paradise Adventist Church had been experiencing a common problem facing most churches in North America: approximately 60% of the youth were leaving the church. Rainer and Rainer (2008) argue that one of the factors in two-thirds of young adults between the ages of 18 and 22 leaving our churches after high school is the lack of a simple and effective discipleship process. Pastoral observation concurs that a primary contributing factor to the loss of Adventist youth is that the youth are not being discipled effectively and thus not rooted in Scripture, connected to …
Emerging Young Adult Spiritual Formation: A Developmental Approach For An Intergenerational Church, Frederick R. Fay
Emerging Young Adult Spiritual Formation: A Developmental Approach For An Intergenerational Church, Frederick R. Fay
Doctor of Ministry
There is a growing disconnect between young adults and the church. Research into this specific and recent phase of life shows how cultural trends have shaped the spiritual lives of emerging adults. This dissertation claims that the loss of relevancy of the church for young adults is rooted in how the church has either capitulated or ignored these trends. Section 1 addresses the current immature faith that is endemic in many contemporary churches. The church’s history and the culture within which it is embedded are examined. Section 2 describes other approaches to spiritual formation of young adults. Section 3 asserts …
A Case Study Of A Servant Leadership Program At A Private, Faith-Based Academy, Lisa Coscia
A Case Study Of A Servant Leadership Program At A Private, Faith-Based Academy, Lisa Coscia
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The private, faith-based academy under study did not have an intentional strategy or program for developing and preparing students to be Christian leaders in their school, community, and world. Although biblical instruction is integrated as a vital component of the curriculum; an intentional leadership program through which students could practice their faith had never been effectively established or implemented at the academy. The students need practical application to have a better understanding of their faith and to grow spiritually as servant leaders.
The purpose of this single-case study was to describe and explain a servant leadership program for juniors and …

God considers parents the primary disciplers of their children. He created the family to be the incubator of a teenager's spiritual growth. God has given parents the responsibility of creating an environment suitable for their teen to become a follower of Christ. He also expects parents to maintain the maturation process while their children still live at home. More specifically, the father has been given the privilege of being the catalyst of each family member's unique journey in becoming like Christ. This thesis will help parents understand why God has given them the enormous task of discipling their teenagers, what …
The Accuracy Of Youth Ministers’ Conception Of The Lasting Faith Tendency Of Youth, Wesley A. Sirles
The Accuracy Of Youth Ministers’ Conception Of The Lasting Faith Tendency Of Youth, Wesley A. Sirles
Faculty Dissertations
The assumption of the current study is that ongoing church attendance is a foundational component of the quest for genuine discipleship in young people. Chapter 1 examines the problem of the exodus of youth from the church and defines the critical terms for this study. The research questions used to guide the study are introduced.
The purpose of this study was to use Wesley Black’s Lasting Faith Scale (LFS) to compare the lasting faith tendency of youth (reflected by their LFS scores) with what their youth ministers believed would be their groups’ LFS scores. LFS responses were also evaluated for …

Course Description (highlights on our journey) "The Pastor and Christian Discipleship" points us in several directions (which is appropriate, since pastors and Christian educators are usually running in about a dozen on any given day). We’ll look at roles and responsibilities of the pastor or Christian education minister in the teaching and learning ministries of the church. You can anticipate navigating through biblical, theological, and social science models of teaching, learning, and faith developing. Lay ministers (volunteers) require nurturing, training, and guiding. Their involvement and your support of their discipleship ministries are crucial in the faith community, so we’ll turn …

Welcome to Foundations of Christian Discipleship. I am so glad you have elected to take this course. While the title of the course suggests a beginning point, I want you to know that it will be broader than just a beginning point. By the end of the semester you will have developed a better understanding of what it means to help the church develop into a stronger, more intelligent, spiritually deep family of believers who are able to articulate their faith. However, do not make the mistake of thinking this is a specialized course. It is a course that broadly …

The Integration Of Church And Home: A Strategic Partnership For Spiritual Formation, Michael B. Haynes
The Integration Of Church And Home: A Strategic Partnership For Spiritual Formation, Michael B. Haynes
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The American family is deteriorating according to current research. This deterioration stems from the church’s inability to develop Christians who practice life according to the principles of the Bible. In a culture characterized by an atomic worldview, the church and family must work together to develop Christians who live according to the relational worldview of Scripture. This project describes how one church developed and implemented a strategy partnering the church and family for the spiritual formation of the next generation. This project is designed as a model for churches seeking to impact the culture one home at a time.
