"A Planet Where The Muses Work Together": Opera Training As A Vehicle For Interdisciplinary Engagement In Higher Education, Jennifer Hamilton
"A Planet Where The Muses Work Together": Opera Training As A Vehicle For Interdisciplinary Engagement In Higher Education, Jennifer Hamilton
Irish Journal of Academic Practice
This study is positioned within the context of the current recommendations for increased interdisciplinary and collaborative engagement in curriculum development (Department of Education and Skills, 2011, p.35). Supported also by recommendations for professional arts practitioners to be multi-skilled, circulated in such publications as the European Association of Conservatoires reports (AEC, 2003), Trinity Guildhall's The Reflective Conservatoire (Odam & Bannan, 2005) and Collaborative Learning in Higher Education (Gaunt & Westerlund, 2013), this study is proposing that there are significant educational benefits from the implementation of and participation in opera-based activities. These possible benefits are discussed along with an overview of the …
Fixed And Fleeting: An Exploration Of Film Poster Art From Weimar Germany, 1919-1933, Melissa Lee Olson Meeks
Fixed And Fleeting: An Exploration Of Film Poster Art From Weimar Germany, 1919-1933, Melissa Lee Olson Meeks
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
My research investigates film advertising and poster designs produced in Germany during the Weimar Republic as significant cultural artifacts revealing the intersections between consumerism and aesthetics, popular entertainment and fine art. The intent of my dissertation is two-fold. On the one hand, I reconsider the intellectual debates surrounding the artistic legitimacy of film as argued in the so-called Kinodebatte of the early twentieth century, an unsettling of the perceived boundaries between high and low art that remains significant to theorizations and explications of cinema today. On the other hand, my examination of the film poster aims to complicate the theoretical …
Data-Ink Ratio And Task Complexity In Graph Comprehension, Kevin Mcgurgan
Data-Ink Ratio And Task Complexity In Graph Comprehension, Kevin Mcgurgan
Theses
Human processing of graphical information is a topic which has wide-reaching implications for decision-making in a variety of contexts. A deeper understanding of the processes of graphical perception can lead to the development of design guidelines which can enhance performance in graphical perception tasks. This study evaluates the data-ink ratio guideline, which recommends the removal of non-data graph elements, resulting in minimalist graph designs. In an experiment, participants answered graph comprehension questions using bar graphs and boxplots with varying data-ink ratios. Participants answered questions with similar levels of accuracy and mental effort. Some participants drew on graphs, reducing the data-ink …

Nature's Geometry, Lin Feng
Nature's Geometry, Lin Feng
LSU Master's Theses
The beauty of the natural world, from the literal to the abstract: color, texture, shape, sounds, plant structure and anatomy, has continuously been the source of inspiration for artists and graphic designers. Our natural environment provides a readily available resource as a basis of visual study and exploration to develop a unique visual language and construct compelling work. Therefore, the aim of my thesis investigation is to create a new visual language and communication based on the inherent beauty within nature and geometric forms found in nature. I began my investigation by developing a family of symbols based on natural …
A Cultural Trade? Canadian Magazine Illustrators At Home And In The United States, 1880-1960, Shannon Jaleen Grove
A Cultural Trade? Canadian Magazine Illustrators At Home And In The United States, 1880-1960, Shannon Jaleen Grove
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation analyzes nationalisms in the work of Canadian magazine illustrators in Toronto and New York, 1880 to 1960. Using a continentalist approach--rather than the nationalist lens often employed by historians of Canadian art--I show the existence of an integrated, joint North American visual culture. Drawing from primary sources and biography, I document the social, political, corporate, and communication networks that illustrators traded in. I focus on two common visual tropes of the day--that of the pretty girl and that of wilderness imagery. Through visual and verbal rhetoric, and through institutional controls to exclude particular kinds of illustration from counting …

Faculty and Staff Publications
Abstract: With the rise of globalization and the spread of Western culture across the globe, the use of English as an “international” language is often represented in bilingual and multilingual typographic signage. Throughout the Middle East North Africa and the Gulf region, the integration of Arabic and Latin letterforms is commonly viewed within the signage of storefronts, street signs, advertising billboards, and informational materials. This paper explores the use of bilingual/multilingual typography within the linguistic landscape of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Watershed - A Transdisciplinary Social Design Process Applied To An Environmental Issue, Forrest Thomas Conroy
Watershed - A Transdisciplinary Social Design Process Applied To An Environmental Issue, Forrest Thomas Conroy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Wicked problems are often vast, complex, and difficult to navigate. Often used in dealing with social design issues, the term "wicked" is intended to connote a problem that is difficult to define and solve rather than its moral implications.1 These problems, like watershed maintenance and pollution mitigation, involve an entwined community of diverse players, intricate systems, and ever-changing terrain. Because of their pluralistic nature, these problems can seem impossible to solve and even impossible to understand. This requires a collective approach and new ways of thinking to create better understanding and solutions. Important changes occur when citizens are knowledgeable, see …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
A parent’s passing will always generate drama within a family, but when you add a family heirloom with a potential value in the millions of dollars, the stakes are quickly raised. Theresa Rebeck’s gripping, anxiety-producing play, Mauritius, introduces tension through a subject most theatre patrons are unlikely to suspect: philately, the study or collection of postage stamps.
World Warrior, Dan Farruggia
World Warrior, Dan Farruggia
Theses
The purpose of this thesis project is to research the design elements of three of the most recognizable armors in world history (the Samurai, the Knight, and the Viking) and adapt them for futuristic character designs for my own fictious real-time computer game called World Warrior. Much like the command and conquer game Age of Empires, players will pick from a vast range of civilizations, construct their own civilization, build an army, and destroy their opponents. It will take place far into the future, and in a time period where great civilizations such as the Byzantines, the Saracens, the Persians, …
Aesthetically Designed Maps: Development And Perception, Catherine Wang
Aesthetically Designed Maps: Development And Perception, Catherine Wang
Graphic Communication
This research explored the creative element of subway map creation in light of its effectiveness. Printed subway maps, used often for metropolitan cities and areas, are limited in physical dimension and scale, carrying minimal information. The New York, San Francisco Bay Area, Tokyo, Paris, London and Moscow subway maps highlight similar design and abstraction that fulfill the basic necessary elements for subway patrons. Over the years since the first metro map for each city was created, maps have become more simplified by removing physical land features and reference points to make way for expanding and new subway lines, stations, and …

Unloosed: Designing Participatory Objects, Laura Schlifer
Unloosed: Designing Participatory Objects, Laura Schlifer
Theses and Dissertations
The ubiquity of technology has mediated the means of receiving content through digital networks; users have complete control over receiving, shaping, and sharing information. In contrast to the inherent elasticity of these networks, physical pieces of communication often manifest through a closed and highly controlled process. However, the increased prominence of user-interaction with media provides an opportunity to evaluate the design process as it applies to the creation of physical objects. Throughout much of my work, I investigate the potential for unloosening the control of designed objects by inviting others into the design process. By considering the audience as active …
Designing Connection, Laurie K. Culshaw
Designing Connection, Laurie K. Culshaw
Theses and Dissertations
Social connection is an essential human need. Personal connections exist at a variety of depths and within different types of relationships. Small daily choices determine the strength of those connections and their impact on our well-being as individuals and as a community. Modern society and technology have altered the speed and channels of connection, increasing communication but decreasing meaningful connection. It is critical to understand how the methods of communication affect the depth of connections. Through a series of participatory graphic design projects, I analyze the strengths and weaknesses of one-on-one, small group and community connections within an established taxonomy …
A Storied Surface, Courtney Wilburn Marse
A Storied Surface, Courtney Wilburn Marse
LSU Master's Theses
A Storied Surface is an exploration of narrative based graphic design engineered for textile surfaces. Beginning with an experiment involving the characters of the novel Matilda, I developed a design system. My process involves creating narratives and illustrating the characters. Then the illustration is abstracted. The abstraction is used to create prints. Finally, all of the elements including the original illustration, abstraction, and print are used to create engineered designs for three-dimensional surfaces. Advances in digital textile printing and the increasing implementation of graphic textiles in the fashion industry led me to experiment with applying my own design to textiles …

Benefits Of Video Presentations In Product Design, Alex Lobos
Benefits Of Video Presentations In Product Design, Alex Lobos
Articles
Product Design uses a human-centered process to develop solutions that solve unmet user needs. Because of the sequential nature of this activity, final designs are often presented in printed process books or digital slideshows, which visually communicate the development of the solution from start to finish rather than focusing just on the final result. Storytelling is a key element to consider when creating these process books in order to communicate the design solution as well as where it came from. An alternative to these presentations is the use of short videos, which offer the advantage of communicating the design process …

Rotational Geometry As A Teaching Tool: Applying The Work Of Giorgio Scarpa, Pino Trogu
Rotational Geometry As A Teaching Tool: Applying The Work Of Giorgio Scarpa, Pino Trogu
Learn X Design Conference Series
This paper focuses on a teaching unit in drawing for design that uses and applies Giorgio Scarpa’s principles and methods in rotational geometry, as put forth in his book Modelli di Geometria Rotatoria, (Models of rotational geometry, 1978), and tests their validity through the construction of physical models built by the students. These models are derived from the sectioning of regular polyhedra such as the cube. The resulting modules can be re-configured into closed or open “chains” capable of folding back into their original minimal volume. This process has parallels in geometric folding, such as in linkages, origami, and polyhedra …

All Dissertations
The need for more engineers equipped with new skill sets is essential for ensuring our national security, climate sustainability, and maintaining our position as a global leader in innovation and as an economic world power. The design challenges engineers face increasingly require a human-centered, creative, practical, and systems-based approach to find the most elegant solutions; i.e. they require design thinkers. According to Tim Brown of IDEO, the characteristics that distinguish design thinkers include: 'empathy--they imagine the world from multiple perspectives, integrative thinking--they can analyze at a detailed and holistic level to develop novel solutions, optimism--they don't back down from challenging …

Experience As An Experiment, James Walker
Experience As An Experiment, James Walker
Theses and Dissertations
My work is an exploration of new media that demonstrates the influence a community has on visual communication. The community reveals content as objects go unnoticed after they become a permanent part of the landscape and assumptions are made from cultural archetypes. Through exploration, immersion, and reflection, I am able to recognize the invisible and expected, establish a familiarity with a community, and design responses that communicate directly to it.
Transforming Narratives, Lucia Weilein
Transforming Narratives, Lucia Weilein
Theses and Dissertations
Narrative, often considered synonymous with “story,” can be viewed from a structuralist perspective and analyzed independent of any particular content. Breaking narrative into categories of story and discourse, this autonomous structure makes possible a translation of content from one form to another. The various media and form types common in graphic design can serve as both recipient and translator of narratives, converting content into a framework that includes the concept of craftsmanship, aesthetic components and specifications, legibility and composition, and the physical form of the designed object. To examine how this framework functions in practice, I have developed a series …
Using Digital Representations Of Practical Production Work For Summative Assessment, C. Paul Newhouse
Using Digital Representations Of Practical Production Work For Summative Assessment, C. Paul Newhouse
Research outputs 2013
This paper presents the findings of the first phase of a three-year study investigating the efficacy of the digitisation of creative practical work as digital portfolios for the purposes of high-stakes summative assessment. At the same time the paired comparisons method of scoring was tried as an alternative to analytical rubric-based marking because we believed that it was likely that a more holistic approach to scoring would be more appropriate. Researchers created digital representations of the practical submissions of 75 Visual Arts and 82 Design students graduating from secondary school in Western Australia. These digital portfolios were scored using the …
