Ceci N’Est Pas Une Chaise: Emerging Practices In Designer-Ai Collaboration, Vera Van Der Burg, Almila Akdag Salah, Senthil Chandrasegaran, Peter Lloyd
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Emerging practices of using ‘off the shelf’ AI as a creative partner in design processes are receiving increasing attention in design research. This paper takes the well-known concept of ‘framing’ in design, along with the Schönian concept of ‘surprise’ to explore how a human-AI dialogue could work. The approach taken is practice-based, with the human designer documenting her process of inquiry and decision making. We show how artificial creativity is expressed through misfiring object detection algorithms, and further how these ‘mistakes’ can be perceived and interpreted by the human designer. The contribution of the research is in laying the foundations …

Whose Place Is It? Enacted Territories In The Museum, Jennie Andersson Schaeffer, Ksenija Komazec, Elsa Vaara, Andreea Strineholm, Helena Tobiasson
DRS Biennial Conference Series
There is a growing trend to embrace the idea of public participation in the work of museums, from exhibition design to collections. To further develop participatory cultures in museums, these negotiations and emerging practices should be examined more closely. This paper explores a museum’s whole-hearted attempt to engage with the societal issue of climate change and work with a high degree of participation from civic society when staging a temporary exhibition. We investigate experiences in the process of building, measuring, separating and transgressing during the collaboration. Based on these explorations the paper presents three emerging and interconnected territories in the …

Design Beyond The Human World Of Management And Organizations: Towards A Cosmology For The Anthropocene, Emmanuel Bonnet, Diego Landivar, Alexandre Monnin, Ulises Navarro Aguiar
DRS Biennial Conference Series
In this paper, we intend to make explicit the shared ontological foundation of design and management and question them in light of the advent of the Anthropocene. To do so, we first draw these disciplines closer before qualifying their common ground as an underlying “cosmology they share”. This cosmology is characterized by the centrality of the notion of organization. We argue that design as well as design knowledge must be assessed with regards to this peculiar cosmology. We call for the need to go beyond what we call the “monism of organizations” or the “organized world”. We propose a new …

Machine Learning Faculty Publications
In order to facilitate designers to explore the market demand trend of laptops and to establish a better “network users-market feedback mechanism”, we propose a design and research method of a short text mining tool based on the K-means clustering algorithm and Kano mode. An improved short text clustering algorithm is used to extract the design elements of laptops. Based on the traditional questionnaire, we extract the user’s attention factors, score the emotional tendency, and analyze the user’s needs based on the Kano model. Then, we select 10 laptops, process them by the improved algorithm, cluster the evaluation words and …

Re-Imagining Design For Affordable Housing In Mexico, Kenza Fernandez Dominguez
Re-Imagining Design For Affordable Housing In Mexico, Kenza Fernandez Dominguez
Scripps Senior Theses
Since the presidency of Enrique Peña Nieto, affordable housing developments in Mexico have been produced in a massive, unsustainable scale. The speed at which these developments are produced equates to the carelessness that goes into their planning. At large, the developments’ monotonous design is aesthetically dehumanizing and fails to promote a sense of community. These developments lack basic infrastructure, and their residents have abandoned them, which has incentivized increased criminal activity.
In this paper, I will be looking at successful models of affordable housing globally, exploring the histories of communal living, and function of architectural collages. Based on my findings …

Survey And Analysis Of Deepfake Media As It Applies To The New Era Of Disinformation, Jade L. Wise
Theses
The world has become a place where technology and the internet is so integrated into every-day life that people rely on the media and internet access to stay informed and connected. But, that has exposed us to a whole new world of positives and negatives, and the negatives could be catastrophic for our society. It will very soon be very difficult for the average person to distinguish between figment and reality; primarily with video, which has always been seen as a credible form of evidence. Deepfake videos are a prime example of this growing phenomenon. They are videos in which, …

Creative problem-solving has been identified as one of the most critical future-proof skillsets we can develop in our society. When educating future designers, entrepreneurship skills are now considered essential; however, designers find it difficult to establish themselves as entrepreneurs. Therefore, graduate designers are increasingly in need of these skills to complement their creative ability. This paper offers information to academic institutions looking to implement entrepreneurship modules in existing design and creative programmes. The paper seeks to understand the entrepreneurship skills required for product design graduates through a case study. Current teaching practice is described, and interviews and co-design sessions with …
Brand New: How Visual Context Shapes Initial Response To Logos And Corporate Visual Identity Systems, Robert A. Wertz
Brand New: How Visual Context Shapes Initial Response To Logos And Corporate Visual Identity Systems, Robert A. Wertz
Theses and Dissertations
When a new logo is released, it does not have an established meaning in the mind of the viewer. As logos have become more highly scrutinized by consumers and critics, it has become more important to understand consumers’ initial response to logos. While other studies have researched the impact of aesthetic choices on viewer reaction to logos, few researchers have attempted to understand the effect of the surrounding visual identity system when a new logo is introduced. This study combines a content analysis of the logo review website Brand New with the voting data from their polls to understand how …
How Will I Thrive? Developing Designer Professional Identity Among Undergraduate Communication Design Students, Denise Bosler
How Will I Thrive? Developing Designer Professional Identity Among Undergraduate Communication Design Students, Denise Bosler
Education Doctorate Dissertations
A designer’s professional identity is constructed throughout a designer’s life and is developed through life experiences and education. While understanding the general importance of a professional identity is often clear to recent design graduates, developing it requires becoming self-aware of what traits constitutes designer professional identity (DPI). Kunrath, Cash and Yi-ling (2016) define DPI as the synthesis of personal attributes and design skills. However, the development of this full complement of DPI traits is often ignored and ill-supported in design education curriculum. A student’s DPI, if under-developed, can be a barrier to successfully transitioning from student to professional. Design educators …

The Role Of Designers In Promoting Healthy Masculinity With An Approach To Stopping Violence Against Women And Girls, Fatemeh Abolbashari
The Role Of Designers In Promoting Healthy Masculinity With An Approach To Stopping Violence Against Women And Girls, Fatemeh Abolbashari
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
While awareness about violence against women and girls is growing, there is still a lack of evidence about what changes behavior to prevent it from happening. As a graphic designer, I wanted to find the root problem of this issue and work towards a solution. Through my research and questioning, I concluded that this problem begins with men’s thoughts on hierarchy, language, and behavior, and supported by a prevalence of toxic masculinity in men’s culture.
Where does this violence come from? What has society done to raise this kind of man? Violence against women and girls is being couched in …

Establishing & Applying Brand Guidelines For The Wood County Humane Society, Paige Isovitsch
Honors Projects
The purpose of this combined VCT Synthesis and Honors Project was to create consistent branding for the Wood County Humane Society (WCHS). The objectives were to create brand guidelines for the non-profit, and then implement the guidelines to create new marketing materials. This project is interdisciplinary in nature and includes visual design, marketing, and communications.
Many non-profits struggle with revolving staff, and some, such as WCHS, do not have a staff member with expertise in marketing and design. In the case of WCHS, this resulted in inconsistent branding that appeared unprofessional and confusing to the community. With this project, I …

Traditional higher education environments have changed very little in the last hundred and fifty years, while technology has advanced in nearly every other area of society making each more productive and more capable. This study identifies key aspects of a comprehensive and universal visual learning system that incorporates a more holistic approach to design and interactivity in educational environments. The desired effect of this is elevating classroom learning to higher levels as defined by Bloom’s Taxonomy. In this thesis, I have collected and explored empirical and observational data to examine the relationship between effective learning environments and the use of …

The Walls We Put Up - Loneliness And Belonging In Urban Co-Living, Richard Rozewski
Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Concurrent issues of social isolation and loneliness have long been recognized as problems that affect seniors but it is also being proven to affect young people as well, specifically with the rise of new technologies and a perception of connectedness. Co-living provides one alternative design solution to traditional housing models which can unlock a range of social benefits.
MOTIVATION
Loneliness is an unfortunate reality of modern life and it is something that most people experience at least once in their life (Cacioppo & Patrick, 2008). A study carried out by Berguno, Leroux McAinsh, Shaikh (2004), showed that 80% of …
Aesthetic Reflection In Managerial Theory And Practice, Adam Dzidowski
Aesthetic Reflection In Managerial Theory And Practice, Adam Dzidowski
European Management Studies
Research on the aesthetics of organisations, conducted for several decades, has led to organisations being no longer regarded as aesthetically neutral entities, but as forms of expression, susceptible to several aspects of human perception, interpretation and reaction. This approach can be of particular importance for supporting creativity, innovativeness, knowledge conversion, and for critical reflection on the theory of management and managerial practice. In order to take full advantage of the potential of this cognitive perspective, one should turn to applied practices (e.g. the work of designers and artists) combined with theory (of perception, design or art), which have thus far …
