Implementation Of Depression Screening To Optimize Chronic Pain Management, Aaron B. Castle
Implementation Of Depression Screening To Optimize Chronic Pain Management, Aaron B. Castle
Group: Northern Arizona University School of Nursing, DNP Doctoral Papers
Background: Chronic pain affects millions of people worldwide and the evidence demonstrates prevalent co morbidity of chronic pain and psychological issues such as anxiety, insomnia, and depression. The existence of psychological issues can have negative impact on pain management and compound the challenges inherent to successful management. Although clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) recommend routine screening for depression, anxiety, and insomnia in all chronic pain patients, many primary care providers fail to routinely perform appropriate screening. The purpose of this project was to implement a practice change that would include screening for depression with chronic pain patients in a rural …

Group: Bryan College of Health Sciences Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice (DNAP) Collection
According to the World Health Organization, major depressive disorder (MDD) is a mental health condition which affects a significant portion of the worldwide population and is projected to become the leading cause of disability by 2020. There are several treatment options for the diagnosis of depression, with the most popular being antidepressant drugs such as the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs); and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). The significant drawbacks to the current treatments are the extended timeframe required for drugs to reach therapeutic efficacy and resistance to ECT over time. These disadvantages can lead to increased risk …

Adverse Childhood Experiences Moderate The Association Between Sensory Processing Sensitivity And Depression, Grant Benham
Psychological Science Faculty Publications
Investigations of the link between personality and depression provide a path to identifying at-risk individuals and developing tailored treatment. Sensory processing sensitivity, reflecting individual differences in processing of internal and external stimuli, has been found to predict depression severity. Based on a diathesis-stress model, the present study examines whether this association is moderated by adverse childhood experiences. An online survey containing standardized measures of adverse childhood experiences, sensory processing sensitivity, and depression severity, was administered to 558 college students. The sample was predominantly Hispanic (92%) and female (70%) with a mean age of 20.2 years. In support of the diathesis-stress …

Mitochondrial Function In The Maternal Brain: A New Perspective On Gestational Stress And Pathology Of Postpartum Depression, Erin Rene Gorman-Sandler
Mitochondrial Function In The Maternal Brain: A New Perspective On Gestational Stress And Pathology Of Postpartum Depression, Erin Rene Gorman-Sandler
Theses and Dissertations
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a major psychiatric complication of childbirth, affecting up to 20% of mothers, yet remains understudied. Mitochondria, dynamic organelles crucial for cell homeostasis and energy production, share links with many of the proposed mechanisms underlying PPD pathology. Brain mitochondrial function is affected by stress, a major risk factor for development of PPD, and is linked to avoidance and social behaviors. Considering the importance of mitochondria in regulating brain function and behavior, we hypothesized that mitochondrial dysfunction is associated with behavioral alterations in a chronic stress-induced rat model of PPD. Chronic mild unpredictable (CMUS) stress during late gestation …

Mental Health During The Covid-19 Pandemic In Trinidad: An Analysis Of Depression, Anxiety, And Stress Among Essential Workers, Bernadette Marson, Gerard A. Hutchinson
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Research shows that some essential workers, such as healthcare workers, social workers, and first responders (including police officers, paramedics, and firefighters), are at greater risk for developing both short- and long-term mental health problems (Berger et al., 2012; Canady, 2022; Grey et al., 2020; Haugen et al., 2012; Mohamed et al., 2022; Petrie et al., 2018). The most prevalent of these include anxiety, depression, and stress, as well as other social and cognitive problems—with stress causing harmful effects on mental health and potentially resulting in anxiety and depression, which may then disrupt an individual’s social relationships, family life, and work. …

Recent theoretical and empirical accounts maintain that different indices of smartphone use—including problematic smartphone use, phone-checking, and screen time—tap distinct facets of smartphone use. This highlights the importance of disentangling potentially unique associations between facets of smartphone use and psychological distress outcomes. The present study examined fine-grained relationships between several smartphone-use indices and facets of psychological distress. Further, we probed whether sex modulated the relationships between smartphone-mediated behaviours and distress outcomes. Using structural equation modelling, we analysed data from young adults (N = 364) and evaluated the associations of smartphone-related behaviours—problematic use, phone checking, and overall screen time—with depression, anxiety, …

Neuroimaging studies have revealed consistent abnormalities in functional connectivity within specific neural networks that may serve as biomarkers for major depressive disorder (MDD). It is important to find inexpensive, non-invasive techniques that target these biomarkers to make diagnosis easier and more objective. EEG microstates are quasi-stable potential topographies that are thought to reflect the quasi-stable network activity of the underlying neural generators. MDD has been shown to alter features of the four canonical EEG microstates (A, B, C, D) with some conflicting results. The most consistent network abnormalities in MDD are found in the anterior default mode network, and this …
