A Stress Process Model Of Depression And Sexual Risk Among Hiv-Seropositive Men Who Have Sex With Men, Aubrey L. Florom-Smith
A Stress Process Model Of Depression And Sexual Risk Among Hiv-Seropositive Men Who Have Sex With Men, Aubrey L. Florom-Smith
Open Access Dissertations
In the United States, men who have sex with men (MSM) remain at greatest risk for acquiring HIV infection. MSM are also at increased risk for depression, and depression and sexual risk behavior among MSM appear to be linked. Stigma, in the forms of gay related stigma and HIV-related stigma, have been associated with depression and high-risk sexual behavior among MSM living with HIV infection, as has the internalization of these stigmata over time. As stigma is socially constructed, the stress process model provides a useful framework for understanding the influence of stress and contextual factors on depressive symptoms and …
Combining The Tripartite And Cognitive-Specificity Models Of Anxiety And Depression, Scott A. Baldwin, Dr. Diane L. Spangler
Combining The Tripartite And Cognitive-Specificity Models Of Anxiety And Depression, Scott A. Baldwin, Dr. Diane L. Spangler
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Depression and anxiety are often comorbid and several theories have been proposed to account for their co-occurrence. The tripartite model accounts for the comorbidity between anxiety and depression in terms of the underlying symptoms that are associated with the two disorders. According to the tripartite model, low positive affect (PA) is unique to depression, while autonomic arousal (AA) is unique to anxiety. Negative affect (NA) is common to both disorders; therefore, the relationship between the disorders in due to a common set of symptoms—NA.

Power Of Shame: The Moderating Effects Of Parental And Peer Connection On The Relationship Between Adolescent Shame And Depression, Self-Esteem, And Hope, Alexander L. Hsieh
Theses and Dissertations
Past research and views on shame have indicated that shame has detrimental effects for adolescent development. Little research has focused on the pathways in which shame may affect adolescent traits. Even less studies examine what variables may moderate the effects of shame. Using adolescent self-report questionnaires, this study examined the relationship between adolescent shame and depression, self-esteem, and hope. In addition, this study examined the moderating effect maternal, paternal, and best friend relationships have between shame and adolescent outcome variables. A structural equation moderation model analysis was fit to data from 307 two-parent families. The average age of adolescents for …
Parental Perceptions: Religiosity And Depression In Families Raising A Child With Diabetes, Caitlin Herrmann Peterson, Dr. Barbara Mandleco
Parental Perceptions: Religiosity And Depression In Families Raising A Child With Diabetes, Caitlin Herrmann Peterson, Dr. Barbara Mandleco
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Parents raising children with disabilities (CWD) experience a number of situations and stresses parents not raising a CWD experience. How families adapt to the situation of raising a CWD may be related to a number of variables including the parent’s religiosity and the depression level of the parents. Clearly, religion serves as an important resource to families; however, it may also act as a resource for families who are raising a CWD. In fact, qualitative and empirical studies alike show religious practices and spiritual beliefs predict relational outcomes (Richards & Bergin, 1997). There is minimal literature examining differences in religiosity …

Out Of The Night, Riley Gryc
SURGE
I did not graduate.
After four years of college, waiting for the day I could shake President Riggs’ hand, receive my diploma, and depart our campus with pride and honor, that day never came. One of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do was watch from the back row of the audience as everyone I had attended school with for the last four years, my classmates, my friends, all received their diplomas and moved on without me. The stares from teachers I knew, the surprised looks from underclassmen, the careful tact with which everyone avoided the subject of not …

Research Brief: "Mental Health Diagnosis And Occupational Functioning In National Guard/Reserve Veterans Returning From Iraq", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
This brief is about the employment or enrollment in school of recently returned National Guard and Reserve OIF/OEF veterans who have a mental health diagnosis compared to those veterans without a mental health diagnosis. In policy and practice, the US military should implement pre- to post-deployment programs to help adjustment into work/school role functioning, and policymakers should partner with universities to help veterans cope with academic stress. Suggestions for future research include using a larger and more comprehensive sample of National Guard/Reserve OIF veterans and studying the effectiveness of programs and support for veterans.
Acculturation, Marianismo Gender Role, And Ambivalent Sexism In Predicting Depression In Latinas, Andreana T. Jezzini
Acculturation, Marianismo Gender Role, And Ambivalent Sexism In Predicting Depression In Latinas, Andreana T. Jezzini
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study explores acculturation, the Latina gender role of marianismo, and ambivalent sexism in predicting depression in a community sample of Latinas. A review of existing literature regarding these variables reveals that all three constructs can be both risk factors as well as protective factors. Since marianismo and ambivalent sexism may share similar traits, both may be self-protective coping mechanisms by Latinas in the context of a patriarchal environment with structured gender roles and strong gender disparities. One hundred and thirteen adult Latina participants from various ancestries of origin were solicited from the community using an Internet survey tool. …
Emotion Processes In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Adolescent Depression, Patrice Siapno Crisostomo
Emotion Processes In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Adolescent Depression, Patrice Siapno Crisostomo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an efficacious treatment for adolescent depression, recent findings indicate that positive treatment effects are reduced among youth with a history of childhood interpersonal trauma (CIT). The processing of emotionally-difficult content has been previously emphasized in therapeutic models for the treatment of depression, as well as post-traumatic stress disorder. The present study evaluated the impact of emotion processes on treatment outcomes in two forms of psychotherapy (CBT and usual care treatment) for adolescent depression. This study observationally coded client emotional involvement, specifically during discussions of trauma-related content, as a potentially critical mechanism of change in …

A Brief Acceptance And Commitment Therapy Protocol For Depression In An Inpatient Setting: An Effectiveness Study, Lucas Broten
Dissertations
The present study sought to investigate the utility of a brief Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) protocol for the treatment of depression in an inpatient setting. ACT is a generally promising treatment for a variety of psychological issues. Thirty-nine participants were randomly assigned using and weighted, blocked distribution to either Treatment as Usual (TAU) or individual sessions of ACT in conjunction with treatment as usual (ACT). The study compared re-admission rates between the ACT intervention group and the TAU group at 3 and 6 months. In addition, the study examined the proposed mechanisms of change between groups and depression rates …
Racial Microaggressions, Stress, And Depression In African Americans: Test Of A Model, Jessica Ra'chel Roberts
Racial Microaggressions, Stress, And Depression In African Americans: Test Of A Model, Jessica Ra'chel Roberts
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the interrelationships between daily hassle stressors (i.e., racial microaggressions and college hassle stress), racial identity, perceived stress, and depression among Black/African American college students. It was hypothesized that perceived stress would partially mediate the relationships between daily hassle stressors and depression. Racial identity was hypothesized to moderate the relationship between racial microaggressions and perceived stress. Data were analyzed from a sample of 142 Black/African American college students from a medium sized university in the Midwest. Utilizing EQS, a path analysis was conducted to test the hypothesized model. Findings from the analysis revealed …

Although there is substantial evidence that low marital satisfaction is a significant risk factor for depression, little research has examined this relationship in cultures outside of the U.S. and Europe. The validity of the marital discord model of depression in Chinese culture was tested by studying 391 couples living in Beijing and Hangzhou, China. Results of structural equation modeling using an actor-partner interdependence model strategy indicated that husbands' and wives' marital satisfaction was significantly predictive of their own depressive symptoms. In addition, wives' marital satisfaction significantly predicted husbands' depressive symptoms. These results provide evidence that the marital discord model of …

Counseling, School Psychology & Sport Faculty Publication Series
Background: There is increasing concern that conflicts of interest affect the development process of clinical practice guidelines. We evaluated The American Psychiatric Association's Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Patients with Major Depressive Disorder to determine the existence of financial and intellectual conflicts of interest and examine their possible effects. We selected this guideline because of its influence on clinical practice and because this guideline recommends pharmacotherapy for all levels of depression, despite controversies over the evidence base.
Methods and Findings: We determined the number and type of financial conflicts of interest for members of the guideline development group as …

Testing An Attribution Model Of Caregiving In A Latino Sample: The Role Of Familismo And The Caregiver-Care Recipient Relationship, Bianca Teresa Villalobos
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Social and economic consequences of depression place a heavy burden on society. Many family members and friends often feel the need take on the role of informal caregivers when loved ones require assistance due to disabling conditions. However, caregiver burden can arise when providing support for a person with a chronic condition. Caregiver burnout is associated with numerous negative outcomes for both the caregiver and care recipient. As such, efforts to understand factors related to reducing caregiver burden are necessary. Research on help giving has been guided by an attribution model developed by Weiner (1988), which describes how attributions …

Examining The Inner Experience Of Three Individuals With Major Depressive Disorder And Three Individuals With Bipolar Disorder, Janell Marie Mihelic
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The diagnostic criteria for major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD) provide a description of expected experiences of individuals diagnosed with those disorders (e.g., sadness, expansive mood, difficulty concentrating). However, much remains unknown about the inner experience of individuals with these disorders which may prove crucial in understanding and treating these disorders. The present study examined the inner experience of three individuals with MDD and three individuals with BD using the Descriptive Experience Sampling (DES) method (Hurlburt 1990, 1993, 2011). Results were not suggestive of any clear, consistent patterns of inner experience either within the MDD or BD groups …

Objectives. Low-income and Latinos use the emergency department (ED) as a primary source of care. Also, the depression prevalence in ED patients is high, making the ED a compelling venue for depression screening and intervention. This study examined barriers and facilitators to depression treatment among low-income, predominantly Latino ED patients. Methods. We conducted telephone interviews with 24 ED patients (18-62 years of age, 79% female) who dropped out of a depression treatment intervention. Using grounded theory, we analyzed perceptions of depression and treatment, and barriers and facilitators to mental health treatment. Results. Although most patients acknowledged signs of depression, there …

The Role Of Affective And Behavioral Economic Factors In Predicting Response To A Brief Intervention For Alcohol And Illicit Drug Use In College Students, Ashley Ann Dennhardt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Brief motivational interventions (BMIs) have been shown to be efficacious in reducing heavy drinking and drug use among college students; however, effect sizes are small and more research is needed to identify predictors of responsiveness to these interventions. Depression, distress tolerance, delay discounting, and the reinforcing efficacy of substances have been implicated in substance use and may predict problem severity. Further, preliminary evidence suggests that these factors may be important predictors of treatment outcomes, but few studies have examined these constructs in this manner. This study tested a novel intervention approach that involves a BMI plus a supplemental intervention targeting …

Psychosocial Interventions For Patients With Head And Neck Cancer., Cherith Semple, Kader Parahoo, Alyson Norman, Eilis Mccaughan, Gerry Humphris, Moyra Mills
School of Psychology
BACKGROUND: A diagnosis of head and neck cancer, like many other cancers, can lead to significant psychosocial distress. Patients with head and neck cancer can have very specific needs, due to both the location of their disease and the impact of treatment, which can interfere with basic day-to-day activities such as eating, speaking and breathing. There is a lack of clarity on the effectiveness of the interventions developed to address the psychosocial distress experienced by patients living with head and neck cancer. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions to improve quality of life and psychosocial well-being for patients …

Depression And Diabetes Comorbidity: Psychotherapy Treatment Preferences Among A Predominantly Mexican Sample Of Primary Care Patients With Diabetes, Maria José Herrera
Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Depression and diabetes are highly comorbid problems yet their conjoint treatment, particularly the use of evidence based psychological treatments among diabetics, warrants further research. Specifically, little is known about the treatment of depression among diabetic Latinos, one of the fastest growing populations with comorbid depression and diabetes. Because of this scarce research among Latino diabetics, the present study aims to test whether educating Latino diabetics about treatment options for depression would differentiate their choice of one treatment over the other. Secondary aims were to investigate the degree to which cultural, depression, and diabetic factors differentiated treatment choice. Thirty two participants …

Sustained negative affect is a hallmark feature of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), and much evidence indicates that depression is associated with difficulties regulating negative emotions. Whereas many studies have demonstrated an association between rumination and depression, few studies have examined depressed individuals’ ability to utilize adaptive strategies, such as reappraisal. The present study was the first to investigate whether individuals with depression have difficulty effectively using reappraisal in response to a laboratory mood induction. Further, we examined whether interpretive biases and cognitive control deficits underlie individual differences in the ability to reappraise. Consistent with hypotheses, results demonstrated that reappraisal was …
