The Impact Of Comorbidities, Depression, And Substance Use Problems On Quality Of Life Among Older Adults Living With Hiv, Brett M. Millar, Tyrel Starks, Sitaji Gurung, Jeffrey T. Parsons
Publications and Research
Older adults living with HIV (OALWH) comprise a growing population with a range of complex and interconnecting medical and psychosocial needs. Based on the biopsychosocial model with its emphasis on a holistic approach to various aspects of people’s lives, the current study explored associations between physical health, psychological health, substance use, and overall quality of life. Drawing on data from 114 substance-using OALWH (aged 50 or older), we employed linear regression to show associations between the number of current comorbid health conditions on quality of life, over and above depression, substance use problems, and demographic characteristics (age, race/ethnicity, gender, sexual …
Effects Of Child Neglect On Psychological Distress In College Students, Veronica Daniel
Effects Of Child Neglect On Psychological Distress In College Students, Veronica Daniel
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The current study focuses on exploring the effects of previous child neglect on current psychological distress in college students. By bringing attention to the lasting impact of neglect through adulthood, mental health professionals will see the need for increased services for this population. A convenience sample of 93 Master of Social Work students responded to questions geared towards experience of neglect as a child and current psychological distress. Correlation analysis was used to examine the relationship between the two variables. No significant results were found. However, future studies are suggested as alternate versions of this study may support the need …
Adequacy Of Depression Treatment In Spouses Of Cancer Survivors: Findings From A Nationally Representative Us Survey, Kristin Litzelman, Abiola O. Keller, Amye Tevaarwerk, Lori Dubenske
Adequacy Of Depression Treatment In Spouses Of Cancer Survivors: Findings From A Nationally Representative Us Survey, Kristin Litzelman, Abiola O. Keller, Amye Tevaarwerk, Lori Dubenske
Physician Assistant Studies Faculty Research and Publications
Background
Recent research suggests that mental health problems in spouses of cancer survivors are associated with worse mental health in the survivors themselves. Adequately treating spousal mental health problems therefore represents an opportunity to improve outcomes for both cancer survivors and their co-surviving family members.
Objective
Using nationally representative data, this study sought to determine how depression treatment differs between spouses of cancer survivors with depression compared to the general married population and assess rural/urban disparities in treatment.
Design
The design of the study is cross sectional.
Participants
Data are from the Medical Expenditures Panel Survey, a household-based survey of …
Identifying Depression In Primary Care: An Evidence-Based Intervention, Mary Alice Peters
Identifying Depression In Primary Care: An Evidence-Based Intervention, Mary Alice Peters
Dissertations
Identifying depression in primary care is an urgent concern locally and nationally. Due to lack of screening or inquiry by primary care providers, as well as an insufficient number of mental health professionals, depression remains under-detected. This problem has been identified locally as a result of a 2014 population health survey in Huron County, Ohio. The population reported multiple reasons for not seeking out a program or service within the county to address symptoms of depression, anxiety, or emotional problems. The 2016 recommendation by The United States Preventative Services Task Force is to screen the general public as long as …

Stop, Meditate, And Listen: A Treatment Modality For Iraqi Refugees With Depression, Katherine Goehring
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Purposes: To implement a mindfulness meditation program with Arabic speaking clients as an adjunctive treatment of depression
Background: Depression rates among Iraqi refugees are between 28.3 and 75% compared to 8.6% in the general population (Slewa-Younan, Guajardo, Heriseanu, & Hasan, 2015). Treatment options are limited at Neighborhood Healthcare in El Cajon due to budget limitations, cultural beliefs and language barriers, among other reasons. Individual therapy is intended to be a brief intervention due to limited staffing. Many middle eastern refugees decline group therapy due to stigma surrounding mental health treatment and concerns about privacy. Even though traditional treatment …
Music As A Catalyst For Altered States Of Consciousness And Peak Experiences In The Treatment Of Depression, Anxiety, And Ptsd, Paul Battles
Music As A Catalyst For Altered States Of Consciousness And Peak Experiences In The Treatment Of Depression, Anxiety, And Ptsd, Paul Battles
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Abstract This paper investigates the therapeutic uses of altered states of consciousness (ASC) and peak experiences (PE) for the treatment of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the ways in which music can be used to facilitate or enhance these experiences. ASC’s and PE’s can help uncover hidden or repressed unconscious material and potentially change the way an individual views and interacts with his or her world. In cases of people suffering from depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), these emotional, cognitive, and perceptual changes have been shown to have sometimes profound and long- lasting therapeutic effects, …
Dance Movement Therapy With Adolescents In A Partial Hospital Program: A Method For Engagement, Claude Michelle Aubourg
Dance Movement Therapy With Adolescents In A Partial Hospital Program: A Method For Engagement, Claude Michelle Aubourg
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Therapeutic engagement during adolescence can be a major challenge in adolescent mental health. Research has indicated therapeutic techniques designed for engaging clients are often ineffective for adolescents because adolescents bring distinctive qualities to the therapy process that differentiate them from other therapy populations. There is also limited research showing effectiveness of Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) with the adolescent population. This capstone will present an adaptable method utilizing dance/movement therapy interventions with participants ages 12-17 in a Partial Hospital Program. The objective of this project was to examine how DMT can improve engagement in treatment with adolescents in a partial hospital program …

School of Medicine Publications
The biochemical processes involved in depression go beyond serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. The N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor has a major role in the neurophysiology of depression. Ketamine, one of the prototypical NMDA antagonists, works rapidly in controlling depressive symptoms, including acutely suicidal behavior, by just a single injection. Ketamine may rapidly increase the glutamate levels and lead to structural neuronal changes. Increased neuronal dendritic growth may contribute to synaptogenesis and an increase in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Activation of the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR), as well as increased levels of BDNF, may increase long-term potentiation and result in an improvement …
The Causal Impact Of Cleft Lip And Palate Surgery On Psychological Wellbeing, Sam Manning
The Causal Impact Of Cleft Lip And Palate Surgery On Psychological Wellbeing, Sam Manning
Master's Theses
Cleft lip and/or cleft palate (CL/P) are birth conditions in which a newborn has an opening in the roof of their mouth or a slit in their upper lip. Left untreated, CL/P can lead to speech impediments and an unsightly orofacial deformity. However, a sequence of simple, common surgical procedures can restore function with minimal scarring. To date, the psychological effects of being born with CL/P have been investigated in the literature, but the restorative impact of CL/P surgery on psychological wellbeing has not been rigorously evaluated. This study uses a quasi-experimental approach to estimate the impact of being born …

The Impact Of Depressive Symptoms On Cognitive Decline And Risk For Dementia, Katheryn Conde
Doctoral Dissertations
As of 2011, the life expectancy for Latinos in the U.S. was 81.6 years, which is higher compared to non-Hispanic Blacks (75.3 years), non-Hispanic Whites (79 years), and Hispanic Black populations (74.9 years; Arias, 2011; Arias, 2015). Latinos have higher age specific prevalence of dementia, which is higher than African Americans and non-Hispanic Whites (Gurland et al.,1999). Latinos experience Alzheimers disease symptoms 6.8 years earlier, with the average onset of 67.6 years which is younger than non-Hispanic Whites (73.1 years; Clark et al., 2005). Furthermore, older Latinos tend to experience depression at a rate of 13% and 35% with the …
Parsing The Blues: What Depression Reveals About The Life Well-Lived, Ian Tully
Parsing The Blues: What Depression Reveals About The Life Well-Lived, Ian Tully
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores the way depression illuminates –and is illuminated by – certain aspects of moral philosophy. I begin by defending, in chapter one, a cognitive theory of one important subtype of depression. The subsequent chapters then investigate what depression can teach us about the nature of well- (and ill-) being, and about the nature of moral virtue. In chapter two I ask ‘what makes depression bad for us?’ and go on to argue that reflection upon this question shows that desire-based theories of welfare are false. Then, in the next chapter, I provide a (partial) answer to that question, …
Examination Of Mental Health And Family Relationship In Collegiate Athletes, Julia Hussey
Examination Of Mental Health And Family Relationship In Collegiate Athletes, Julia Hussey
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Athletes at the collegiate level frequently experience unique stressors that cause them to be at risk for a number of mental health difficulties, including depression, anxiety, and substance use. Current research in the field suggests that athletes are not as likely as their non-athlete peers to seek out psychological services for mental health difficulties. Social supports have been shown to impact athletes’ mental health and sport performance. Specifically, family relationships appear to have an influence on athletes’ level of stress and motivation, with positive family relationships showing decreases in athletes’ worry as well as faster recovery following injury. Surprisingly, there …

The Effectiveness Of Screening For Comorbid Depression Among Outpatients With Chronic Diseases In Maryland, Linda H. Allibalogun
The Effectiveness Of Screening For Comorbid Depression Among Outpatients With Chronic Diseases In Maryland, Linda H. Allibalogun
Dissertations
Depression is a pervasive mental health disorder worldwide. Although being diagnosed with chronic illness exacerbates susceptibility to depression, detection and subsequent treatment of comorbid depression in primary care settings remain suboptimal because patients with chronic medical disorders are not commonly screened for depression. There is a need to initiate proactive measures by implementing routine screening in primary care settings. The plan-do-study-act (PDSA) model guided an intervention to establish a depression screening practice. This study aimed to determine if the implementation of evidence-based screening for depression using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) tool could increase diagnosis of comorbid depression among patients …
Exploring The Relationship Between Team Characteristics And Mental Health Symptoms Amongst Student Athletes, Dylan Owens
Exploring The Relationship Between Team Characteristics And Mental Health Symptoms Amongst Student Athletes, Dylan Owens
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Depression and anxiety are disabling conditions that are particularly prevalent amongst young adults (Wolanin, Hong, Marks, Panchoo, & Gross, 2016). Student athletes must cope with extensive time demands that go beyond those of ordinary young adults, consequently putting them at increased risk to experiencing mental health issues. Numerous factors may influence an athlete’s well being, such as gender, injury, and type of sport. This study tests these various factors but also extends previous literature by analyzing the effects of team dynamics on student athlete mental health. An anonymous multi-part questionnaire was sent out to all JMU athletes in the Fall …
Mental Health Literacy: Investigating Adolescents’ Knowledge Of Depression And Professional Sources Of Help, Jessica A. Meeks
Mental Health Literacy: Investigating Adolescents’ Knowledge Of Depression And Professional Sources Of Help, Jessica A. Meeks
Educational Specialist, 2009-2019
Depression is one of the most common mental health disorders affecting adolescents, and there is evidence suggesting that there are adolescents suffering from depression who are not receiving treatment (Mojtabai, Offson, & Han, 2016). The increasing presence of mental health professionals and mental health services in public schools is one solution to the treatment gap. However, less is known about adolescents’ understanding of depression and treatment options. The current study utilized an online survey to examine the mental health literacy of 38 ninth grade students. Results indicated that adolescents have a moderate ability to recognize and label depression from brief …

Literature Review And Proposal: Yoga As Group Exercise Involving Oxytocin Release For Positive Mood Improvement, Rachel Fenton
Honors Projects
A literature review discusses yoga and health involving oxytocin creates the premise for a proposal combining the knowledge of yoga and its health benefits along with oxytocin's potential involvement during group exercise, yoga specifically. The proposed study's results of oxytocin measures and questionnaires have the potential to develop an understanding of the possible impacts of yoga on mood, particularly relationships between group exercise and yoga, which may help develop forms of group exercise or implement group yoga to assist or replace treatment for stress-caused or stress-related disorders.
Social Work Trauma Interventions: Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Kassie Baumann
Social Work Trauma Interventions: Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Kassie Baumann
Senior Honors Theses
According to Lynne Weilart (2013), in her article on the reasons why people seek out therapy, trauma is the number one reason people attend counseling. Many different trauma-informed approaches are designed specifically to address the consequences of trauma and to facilitate healing. Some of these approaches are as follows: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT); Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT);Mentalization Based Therapy (MBT); Trauma Systems Therapy (TST); Trauma Assessment Pathway (TAP); and Attachment, Self-Regulation, and Competency (ARC) (de Arellano, Danielson, Ko, & Sprauge, 2008). The effectiveness of each trauma intervention will be examined. DBT is one of these trauma interventions that is growing …

Internalizing Symptoms Associated With Emotional Abuse: An Examination Of Religious Social Support As A Moderating Variable, Jessica Chambers, Diana Morelen, Jason Steadman, Michelle Hurley
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Emotional abuse in childhood is linked to an increased risk for internalizing symptoms such as depression and anxiety in adulthood. Religious social support offers a promising defense in maintaining mental well-being in the face of trauma. This study aims to investigate if religious social support in childhood will moderate the impact of negative outcomes associated with emotional abuse. Further, this study will examine whether and how gender and ethnicity impact this relationship. The sample includes undergraduate students attending East Tennessee State University, located in the southeastern United States (n = 471, 73% female, 11% African American, M age = 20.37, …
Primary Care Provider Attitudes Towards Adoption Of Evidence Based Practice: Indicators Of Acceptance Towards Bibliotherapy, Shannon Scott
Primary Care Provider Attitudes Towards Adoption Of Evidence Based Practice: Indicators Of Acceptance Towards Bibliotherapy, Shannon Scott
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
The rising prevalence of depression is straining the skeletal mental health systems in rural communities, resulting in a majority of patients receiving management for their depression solely by their primary care providers. However, providers need to be empowered with evidence-based resources to provide adequate care beyond pharmacotherapy exclusively. Bibliotherapy, or the prescription of books for the treatment of disease, is readily used by psychologists but less incorporated into the traditional medical model of patient care. This small pilot study provided primary care providers in a rural area complimentary copies of the self-help text Feeling Good (Burns, 2009) to incorporate into …
The Role Of Traditional And Cyberbullying Victimization In Predicting Emotional Difficulties In Elementary Schools, Sarah Bleam
The Role Of Traditional And Cyberbullying Victimization In Predicting Emotional Difficulties In Elementary Schools, Sarah Bleam
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Bullying victimization is a pressing concern in schools across the United States. Victimization to bullying has been associated with various negative outcomes in a child’s life. Of concern, victims can experience emotional difficulties, such as anxiety and depression, that can have lifelong implications for a child. For this reason, identifying victimization as a contributing factor is imperative for successful intervention in schools. We measured traditional and cyberbullying victimization experiences and emotional difficulties in 214 fourth and fifth grade students in the Southeastern United States. A multiple linear regression and sequential regression analysis identified that traditional and cyber victimization contributed to …
Differential Impact Of Psychological And Physiological Health Outcomes On Long-Term Associative Recognition, James D. Schaeffer
Differential Impact Of Psychological And Physiological Health Outcomes On Long-Term Associative Recognition, James D. Schaeffer
Psychology Dissertations - Archive
Evidence suggests that lifestyle and environmental factors may contribute to later life cognitive decline and dementia. Although there is a large amount of evidence linking psychological and physiological factors to general memory performance, little focus has been given to specific memory systems. The present study was designed to investigate relationships between psychophysiological health predictors and recollection and familiarity processes of recognition memory. We hypothesized that these recognition processes may be differentially impacted by the included health variables. The present study involved 96 relatively healthy young adults between 17 and 25 years old. Health measures included visceral obesity (waist-to-hip ratio), heart …
Physical Therapy Review Of Best Practices Based On Psychology, Bethany Painter
Physical Therapy Review Of Best Practices Based On Psychology, Bethany Painter
Honors Projects
Physical therapy is a field that is growing and changing constantly. For so long, it was assumed that physical healing should be the sole focus of physical therapy. While this is an important aspect of the rehabilitation process, there is so much more to it than that. The psychological trauma a person may experience following an injury can be just as challenging, if not more challenging to overcome than the physical repercussions of the injury. For this reason, it is important to take psychological healing into consideration, as well as physical healing when creating best practices for physical therapists. The …
Evaluating Implicit Self-Compassion In College Students, Emily Kutok
Evaluating Implicit Self-Compassion In College Students, Emily Kutok
Senior Honors Projects
Typically, research on self-compassion and mental health has used the measurement tool of self-report (explicit) surveys to examine self-compassion. Implicit Association Tests (IAT) can be applied to a number of di erent constructs, some of which include racial biases, gender stereotypes, and suicidal ideation. ey are used to measure the strength of a person’s automatic association between two concepts (in this case, between self and compassion). By measuring implicit self-compassion, a researcher can expect less self-report bias related to self- presentational concerns and the limits of introspection, and they can capture psychological processes that occur without full conscious awareness but …
