Growing Up Deaf In Appalachia: An Oral History Of My Mother, Elizabeth Shelton Tipton

This study focuses on the life experiences of a rural, Deaf Appalachian woman, Jane Ann Shelton, a second generation Deaf child born to Deaf parents from the communities of Devil’s Fork (Flag Pond, Tennessee) and Shelton Laurel (Madison County, North Carolina). Over two hours of videotaped interviews were interpreted and transcribed, followed by various other communications to describe the life of a rural, Deaf Appalachian woman without a formal high school degree. As an advocate and a political lobbyist in Tennessee during the 1980s and 90s, she was unparalleled by her peers (deaf or hearing) in her efforts to “enhance …

The significant advances in technology and educational options for children who are deaf present a parent with opportunities to make choices on behalf of their child. The variability in overall results for all available options and the long-term implications of decisions made early in a child's life make it necessary for parents to utilize an objective process. A framework for ensuring the parent's right to make decisions on behalf of their child will be discussed using five principles of bioethics. Mental Health Services For The Deaf: A Focus Group Study In New York’S Capital Region, Heather K. Horton, Hee Chul Kim, Marley Mills

Improved functioning is typical when deaf mental health consumers are removed from inaccessible programming and placed in accessible environments. Observed gains have long-provided convincing evidence that social interaction (in sign language) is essential to recovery from mental illness. Still, many deaf people reside in psychiatric settings alongside others with whom they cannot communicate. A focus group was convened to investigate services in New York's Capital Region. Identified barriers included lack of deaf clinicians, scarcity of qualified mental health interpreters, and funding restrictions.
