American Sign Language As A Foreign Language Equivalent At James Madison University, Abigail E. Compton
American Sign Language As A Foreign Language Equivalent At James Madison University, Abigail E. Compton
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
ASL is increasingly gaining acknowledgment as a foreign language in the university setting. At James Madison University, sign language classes have traditionally been housed within the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. This research makes a case for considering ASL as an equivalent to courses in the Department of Foreign Languages, Literatures, and Cultures and argues that ASL meets the university standards for the study of a foreign language with regard to fulfilling Bachelor of Arts requirements.
Considering the linguistic history of ASL and the language’s accompanying culture, we will demonstrate the standards for teaching ASL are identical to the …

The Legal Capacity Of Deaf Persons In The Decisions Of The Imperial Court Of Justice Between 1880 And 1900, Raluca Enescu, Anja Werner
The Legal Capacity Of Deaf Persons In The Decisions Of The Imperial Court Of Justice Between 1880 And 1900, Raluca Enescu, Anja Werner
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
The inclusion of deaf persons in a judicial setting raised questions about their ability to bear witness, be convicted, conclude a marriage, make a will and, of course, about the ability of the court to communicate with them. In their decisions, the judges of the Imperial Court of Justice in Leipzig shed light on their interpretation of the capacity of deaf persons to participate in the legal realm. The motivation of their judgments drew comparisons with different categories of citizens to compensate for incomplete laws. They also took into account developments in the education of deaf persons regarding their communication …

Exploring Negative Sexual Experiences, Attitudes, And Behaviors By Auditory Status, Taylor Victoria Vogt
Exploring Negative Sexual Experiences, Attitudes, And Behaviors By Auditory Status, Taylor Victoria Vogt
Theses
Sexual assault is a significant problem on college campuses across the United States and an extensive amount of research has been conducted to address the issue. However, only a limited number of empirical studies have examined sexual victimization among the Deaf and hard of hearing population. Using a survey instrument with a sample of Deaf, hard of hearing and hearing students (n = 3,970) at the Rochester Institute of Technology, this study examined the associations between auditory status, prior sexual victimization, rape myths and behaviors. The results showed that Deaf and hard of hearing students are more likely to experience …

Assessing Deaf Culture Awareness Of Physician Assistant Students In The Midwest, Sheryl E. Delude, Morgan, Kay Foizie
Assessing Deaf Culture Awareness Of Physician Assistant Students In The Midwest, Sheryl E. Delude, Morgan, Kay Foizie
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Currently, there has been insufficient research to support the need for implementation of deaf awareness training into physician assistant (PA) program curriculums. To address this gap in research, PA students in the Midwest United States were surveyed in order to assess student knowledge of Deaf culture and knowledge regarding appropriate management of patients who are deaf. Survey knowledge scores were compared to previously documented knowledge scores of medical students enrolled in the Medical Students, Cancer Control, and the Deaf Community Training (DCT) program at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). PA student scores were also compared to scores of …

How Does An Interpreter Affect The Client-Counselor Relationship With A Client Who Is Deaf?, Vanessa Ivette Rodriguez-Aviles
How Does An Interpreter Affect The Client-Counselor Relationship With A Client Who Is Deaf?, Vanessa Ivette Rodriguez-Aviles
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Few studies have explored mental health services such as counseling that are specifically provided to those who are d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/DHH). This qualitative study was intended as an early research effort within a young field to investigate the impact of having an interpreter present within the therapeutic context. Qualitative data were obtained from an online, open-ended survey of eight d/Deaf and/or hard of hearing counseling clients in which the counselor was hearing and an interpreter was used in the counseling process. It was found that that d/Deaf cultural competence on the part of the counselor is an …
