The Power Of Improvisational Teaching, Elizabeth Graue, Kristin Whyte, Anne E. Karabon

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

In this study we examine how improvisation can facilitate understanding how teachers respond to children's multiple resources, interests, experiences, and skills in early childhood programs. Improvisation is conceptualized as a responsive, partnered activity through which teachers and children generate meaning and knowledge together. In our analysis we show improvisation is taken up differently in two classrooms and how it variably provides opportunities for learning. Two cases from a professional development program designed to support culturally and developmentally appropriate early mathematics are used to demonstrate the possibilities improvisation creates in era of increasing standardization of curriculum.

Creating Space In The Curriculum For Workplace And Generic Skills, Brian Campbell Apr 2015

Creating Space In The Curriculum For Workplace And Generic Skills, Brian Campbell

Stream 6: Global University

There are competing forces affecting university credibility. On the one hand there is credibility in the competitive academic environment that results in the expansion of the curriculum. And on the other hand there are the increasing pressures from outside the academy for university graduates to have economically relevant workplace skills. In this paper I analyze some of the difficulties that result from these competing pressures and speculate on how they might be resolved. The example of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology is used as a new university in attempting to establish its credibility. I suggest that collegial review …

Arts Integration, Kenzi Kelly Apr 2015

Arts Integration, Kenzi Kelly

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Art integration is an essential aspect of student learning to provide children with a well-rounded education. While art leads to self expression, confidence, and engagement, budget cuts and the stress to perform on standardized tests has led to its near extinction. Educational policies, such as No Child Left Behind (NCLB), have left art classes in a particularly vulnerable state, causing teachers to manipulate the yearly curriculum to increase test scores rather than focusing on individual student needs. The purpose of this project was to alleviate the pressure and tension teachers felt when confronted with lack of time and creativity within …

Science Curriculum Development With Next Generation Standards: Meeting The Needs Of In-Service Teachers, Laura Arnow Apr 2015

Science Curriculum Development With Next Generation Standards: Meeting The Needs Of In-Service Teachers, Laura Arnow

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) bring new opportunities to American classrooms, with their emphasis on investigation, reliance on data, and constructing explanations and lines of argument based on evidence. However, they also pose considerable challenges both to teachers and students. Years of minimal science instruction during the era of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) have left a generation of students unfamiliar with the idea of questioning, and a professional cohort of teachers with little experience with inquiry curriculum or confidence in their mastery of science content. This leaves a gap for curriculum design. This study assessed the needs of …

Teaching Tolkien: Language, Scholarship, And Creativity, Adam Kotlarczyk Apr 2015

Teaching Tolkien: Language, Scholarship, And Creativity, Adam Kotlarczyk

Faculty Publications & Research

Why Tolkien?

Let us start with the obvious—if cynical—question, almost certain to come from a skeptical administrator or colleague: why would any serious, self-respecting English teacher want to teach an author whose work is about dragons, fairies, and the fantastic? With all the increased attention to standardized testing and with the demand for rigor in read- ings in the average English curriculum, choosing a popular text might raise eyebrows among critics. The question that an English teacher may be asked (or indeed, may ask him- or herself) is: doesn't teaching Tolkien as "serious" literature just fan those flames?

Four Domains Of Knowledge In Education, Justin Tyler Ormsby Mar 2015

Four Domains Of Knowledge In Education, Justin Tyler Ormsby

Theses

American educational curricular policy defines knowledge in an unfortunately narrow way. Specifically, it favors theoretical knowledge that is both appropriate for college bound students and is easy to assess by mass distributed standardized tests. But there are many domains of knowledge which, when implemented into the curriculum, serve equally well to prepare students for life after schooling. In this paper I construct a logical space for discussing knowledge in an educational institution that is not so narrow. I divide knowledge into two main categories, virtues and techne. The domain of virtues contain contains two additional categories, virtues of character and …

The foundation of these new architectures involve data representation and storage, and several NoSQL options are explored for performing this task. Implementing the data stores with these technologies allowed the data to be stored in its native structure and greatly facilitates extensibility of …

Cracking Open The Classroom Door: Developing A First Amendment Standard For Curricular Speech, Nicholas K. Tygesson Jan 2015

Cracking Open The Classroom Door: Developing A First Amendment Standard For Curricular Speech, Nicholas K. Tygesson

Northwestern University Law Review

Around this country, courts have found that the discharge of public school teachers for their classroom speech does not implicate the First Amendment. Others have protected this speech, but only by importing analytical approaches from other areas of law ill suited to the unique interests at play in America’s public schools. The resulting patchwork of doctrinal approaches provides little clarity for courts and only illusory protection for teachers. This Note will start from scratch, examining the first principles at play in public school classrooms and tailoring a First Amendment approach to respect the needs of government, teachers, and students. When …
